Word-Art Project
Date Issued: Week-1 Due Date: Week-2
Materials:16”x20” Paper Ebony Pencil Ruler
Important Terms and Concepts Element of Line, Shape, & Space: A shape is an element of art. A shape is a flat enclosed area. It is two-dimensional, which means that it has both height and width, but no depth. A line is an element of art. One way to think of line is to consider it as a continuous mark that moves across a surface. Space is an element of art that refers to the distances or areas around, between or within components of a composition. There are two types of space: positive space and negative space. Positive space refers to the space of a shape representing the subject matter. Negative space refers to the space around and between the subject matter.
Project: Directions For this Project you will use the art elements of line, shape and space to create an artwork. You will write your name using only four-letter word, i.e. Melody would be MLDY, Rachel would be RCHL. I f your name has our letters in then write your name. Should your name have less then four letter you may incorporate a symbol or a number for one of your letters. Each letter of the word will be enclosed by a rectangle. The rectangle should be 5-inches in length. Within each enclosed rectangle you will emphasis one of the following:
1. One letter using the element of line in negative space (“S”). 2. One letter using the element of line in positive space (“W”). 3. One letter representing the element of shape in positive space (“A”). 4. One letter representing the element of shape in negative space (“G”). 5. Use an ebony pencil to create your artwork.
Example:
With exception to the letter “W” each letter lives within a 5 inch box Materials:

\An ebony pencil is used for drawing. Ebony pencils are composed of a soft carbon and graphite mix. They are great for creating dark values in a drawing. We will use the following timeline for this project: Tuesday: Participate in introduction of project, and teacher demo on ebony pencil. Create two thumbnails of your proposed Word-Art. Wednesday: Use letter templates to layout your design. Thursday: Use ebony pencil to shade in your Word-Art. Friday: TBA. Grading Criteria:
