What we are doing and why
The Woolwell to The George scheme aims to alleviate congestion at the notorious pinch-point between Woolwell Roundabout and The George, on the A386 Tavistock Road.
More than 30,000 vehicles use this section of road each day and there are often queues and delays at peak times, caused by traffic having to merge over very short distances. The impact of this congestion extends far beyond the immediate Woolwell area, affecting the A386 Tavistock Road as far south as Manadon Roundabout.
With significant growth planned for the north of the city and traffic forecast to increase along this route, it is vital to provide improvements that will encourage more walking, cycling and bus travel, as well as minimise congestion and delays for general traffic.

Scheme update
Following public consultation in 2017, we have been busy carrying out a considerable amount of design and assessment work to understand the performance and potential impact of the plans.
The updated plans include widening Tavistock Road to provide a dual carriageway and replacing Woolwell Roundabout with a signalised junction. A new junction will also be created at Woolwell Crescent and there will be new and upgraded footways and cycleways and safer crossing points to support active travel. In addition, a second level will also be added onto the George Park and Ride car park.

Scheme overview
The George Park and Ride extension
It is proposed that a second level will be built over the existing park and ride site, to provide an extra 300 to 500 parking spaces. Plans include more electric vehicle charging bays, cycle parking, car-share and parent spaces and disabled and dementia friendly bays. It is anticipated that solar panels will be installed.

Tavistock Road - new Woolwell junction3
Woolwell Roundabout will be replaced with a signalised junction. Tavistock Road will be widened, providing new and improved footways, on and off road cycle lanes and an additional traffic lane in both directions. Safer crossing points will also be provided to further encourage active travel.
New Woolwell Crescent junction
A new signalised junction will be created where Woolwell Crescent joins Tavistock Road. This new junction replaces the right turn that currently takes place out of Woolwell Road, onto Woolwell roundabout. Vehicles wishing to head south will still be able to turn left here or use Woolwell Road. A new left turn into Woolwell Crescent will also be created.

How the scheme will be paid for
We have already secured a £5 million contribution from the Department for Transport’s Transforming Cities Fund towards the walking and cycling improvements and we are continuing to explore all funding opportunities to support this scheme.
