January 31, 2014

Dear Woodview Parents and Guardians,

We are looking forward to conferences the week of February 10-13th with the focus being on student

involvement with their parents and teachers. We will be discussing your child’s progress and the goals and

improvement that are being made since we last met in October. This conference is a time for your child to take

the lead sharing evidence of their learning. If you have not already made a conference time with your child’s

teacher, please do so immediately.

A reminder that Thursday, February 13th will be an early dismissal day. There will be no student attendance on

Friday, February 14th and no student attendance on Monday, February 17th

, Presidents’ Day. Enjoy a nice long

winter weekend.

We look forward to our upcoming Dinner/Lip Sync show Friday, January 31st. It promises to be an exciting

evening where the students, parents, and teachers all come together to show off their talents and raise money for

our school. We hope to see you and your family there!

The students do go out for recess during the winter months and enjoy playing in the snow. In order to play on

the playground, the children must wear all “5 points”. This is snow pants, boots, winter coat, hat and

gloves/mittens. The blacktop provides an area for students to play who are not dressed for the snow or wet

conditions. We will be outside unless the wind chill is 0 degrees or below.

Sincerely,

Cathy Santelle

Six Flags Read to Succeed Challenge!

The Six Flags Read to Succeed forms were sent home with all students on a yellow piece of paper. It's a great way for parents and teachers to encourage students to read for fun and information outside of their homework. Each child that reads for six hours will earn one free ticket to Great America. Simply have your student write down the titles of the books he/she is reading (listening to) and the amount of time that they read. The deadline to turn in their Read to Succeed reading logs is February 12, 2014.

So.... those 10 minutes your child is looking at Highlights at the doctor's office would count. As would the 10 minutes they spend reading on your e-reader while they are waiting for their extracurricular activity. Reading cereal boxes, graphic novels and magazines all count. Listening to a parent read or enjoying a story on Tumblebooks or Bookflix through the public library website also contributes to their total. If your child reads to younger siblings or buddy reads, they can both count the time. The children have three months to complete the six-hour challenge. Forms can be turned in to their classroom teacher as soon as the challenge has been met. Extra forms for the program can be found in the school office

Happy Birthday to our students who have a birthday in January! The students had a

birthday breakfast with Principal Santelle!

Art News

I am always looking for more parent volunteers to help out in the art room at various times throughout the year. If you are interested in helping please contact me at [email protected].

There are different supplies that the art room is always looking for: Baby wipes, yarn, fake flowers, buttons, beads, pipe cleaners, pencils, glitter, fun erasers for prizes, masking tape, large zip lock bags, washable markers. Thank you so much for the parents that have given the Art Room supplies! I really appreciate all your love and support.

Kindergarten The students are learning about the primary and secondary colors. They are painting a piece of paper

with each color. Then the students will turn their brush over and make marks on there paper, this is visual texture. When they finish, the Teacher will read them an Eric Carle storybook and learn all about the artist. With their textured paper, they will make an outdoor picture by cutting out shapes and gluing it all together.

First Grade The students learned how to draw a landscape. First there was a discussion in the beginning of the lesson the difference between a cityscape and a landscape. Then the teacher taught them a step-by-step drawing on how to draw a landscape. The students included: rocks, grass, hills, trees, water, animals, mountains, and a sky. When the students finished the drawing, they learned about different types of lines. There are many different types of lines: wavy, zigzag, spirals, curly, straight, thin, thick, and dotted lines. The students then used this knowledge and turned their landscape into a creative world of lines.

Second Grade The students are learning about the life of the artist named Vincent Van Gogh. They will be looking at the famous painting The Starry Night, to learn how to make a landscape. The students will learn about horizon line, background, foreground, the sky, nature, and how to draw using perspective. They will also be learning about the art period Vincent Van Gogh was in, Post Impressionism. Van Gogh liked to show his brush strokes in his work, and the students will have to follow that style in their art project. The students will then draw a starry night landscape, just like Van Gogh famous painting.

Third Grade The students just started learning about textile weaving. First, there was a discussion about all different countries that have weaving; also talking about every day places that people would see weaving. Some of the art vocabulary that the students will learn in this project is: loom, weave, weft, and warp. The students will be able to choose different colored yarn to weave their art project on a cardboard loom.

Fourth Grade The students are working with clay and construction their own Big Mouths. A Big Mouth can be an animal, person, creature, alien, or made up character that looks like their mouth is open really wide. This is a fun lesson where the students have to use their imagination as well as critical thinking as to how to construct a three-dimensional art project. They will be learning new vocabulary words that go along with ceramics, for example: wedge, scoring and slipping, kiln, leather hard, bone dry, bisque fire, and glaze fire.

P.E. News

The 3rd and 4th graders have started badminton in gym class. So far,

they have all been doing an outstanding job. Badminton works on your hand-eye-coordination and every day the students are improving this skill. We are very proud of the improvement by the students.

The 1st and 2nd graders are also working on hand-eye-coordination skills. They were introduced to it last week and seem to be doing a really good job with it. These grades will also start to learn how to use tennis racquets this week as well.

We have really been focusing on catching and throwing with our kindergartners. They have been using a variety of different size balls and seem

to really enjoy it. They are practicing throwing a ball back and forth to a partner so we are also working with their accuracy as well.

Planning is underway for Exploration Day 2014! It's a day like no other for Woodview students, filled with exploring, learning, discovering and having fun. The students will choose from over 20 hands-on

presentations and move about the school experiencing the interactive and interesting topics. HELP WANTED!

Exploration Day is simply not possible without the help of volunteers. It takes more than 100

volunteers to make this wonderful day the success that it always is. Though we already have many exciting presentations lined up, we are in need of several more. Do

you have an interest in something unique? Do you have a hobby or career that you think our students would be interested in learning more about?

Exploration Day 2014 is scheduled for Friday, May 9th. The day begins and ends with a special ceremony, and is broken up into five, 40-minute sessions that consist of approximately 15-25

students each.

If you would be willing to present at Exploration Day, please return this form to school as soon as possible.

We will get in touch with you to assist you with planning. If you are not interested in presenting, but

would like to volunteer in other areas on Exploration Day, information about that will be sent out in the next few weeks.

Strategies for Helping Kids Get Organized

As adults, we use strategies to organize our lives. We put papers in color-

coded folders, use shoe racks, and schedule appointments with PDA’s, calendars, and lists to organize our environments. Providing children with similar strategies helps them organize their environments and promotes independence. Although we try and help kids organize by reminding them to put their things away, many children often need examples and support to succeed at organizing their lives. Below are a few tips for helping kids take their organization to the next level.

1. Toys – Use pictures or drawings of items to remind children where things belong. Cut pictures from the newspaper or use a picture from the toy’s box. Tape images on shelves and in toy boxes so children clearly know where toys belong. Pictures and labels also can be used outside totes and bins to indicate where animals, art supplies, or other small toys belong.

2. Shoes – Provide a mat, box, or shelf for shoes. If kids remove their shoes in the entranceway, be sure to place the box or mat immediately inside or outside the door. If people wear shoes in the home, be sure to have the box, shelf, or mat located in the child’s room in an easy to access location. 3. Bathroom – Use toothbrush, soap, cup, and toothpaste holders to provide a natural reminder where things belong. Towels should be housed on a towel rod or ring so children know where to return them when they finish drying their hands and face. All areas should be accessible when the child is standing on the floor or on a step stool so they can be responsible for putting their own items away. 4. Desk – Create a jig or outline of the location where each object belongs. Place outlines on the top of the desk and in the desk draws to let children know where to find and return their notebooks, pencils, crayons, and other school materials. Clearly defining areas is important for kids to independently locate and return writing and working materials. 5. Book Bag – Give children the resources they need to organize their papers, pencils, and other school supplies. Folders are a way to keep papers sorted by subject. Be sure to use folders with pockets that are secure and provide enough space for necessary pages. Label notebooks and use different color books for different subjects. For pencils, erasers, and pens select a bag with pockets

Page 12: Woodview PTOww2.d46.k12.il.us/wv/newsletters/wv013114news.pdf2/5 WV Market Day Orders Due 2/5 GMS Board of Education Meeting at 6:30pm 2/8 MV Market Day Pickup at Meadowview, 9:30-11am

for these items or purchase a pencil holder. Make a weekly routine, possibly Sunday evening, or removing any unnecessary papers and materials from the book bag so children can stay organized and find their important materials. 6. Clothes –Drawers should be easy to open and closets should have hangers and shelving children can reach easily. As with toys, children can benefit from a picture, drawing, or words indicating where clothes belong. Provide enough hangers and shelving so clothes fit neatly in the closet or drawers. Dirty clothing should be put in a convenient place. Be sure hampers are easy to access and near areas where the children remove their clothes. If children change in the bedroom and in the bathroom, place hampers in both locations. 6. Conflict Resolution: Interpretation of rules, calls on plays, and opportunities for taking turns can all result in conflict. When children disagree during a game, practice skills for managing conflict. Teach children to take a deep breath, explain their understanding of the situation, listen to others, and then determine a way to resolve the conflict. When possible, try to prevent conflict by helping children review the rules in advance, determine who calls the plays, establish the order, etc.

Teaching Skills for Playing with Other Children

The complexity of interactions children need to exhibit while playing with peers varies tremendously depending on the activity. Some examples include collaboratively building a fort, playing a board game, playing video games, and competing in sports. Although different in scope, need for communication, and complexity of interactions, there are a number of core skills children need to work on to be successful in their play interactions. This article discusses those skills and strategies for developing them. 1. Listening and Responding – Whether passing the ball in soccer or discussing a video game, listening and appropriately responding to other people’s comments and requests is important. Children can be excited about an activity and forget to listen. Practice listening skills with role plays and discussions. Make role play cards with pictures of characters in a play situation or written scenarios. Have children act out the scene. Highlight the importance of listening and discuss how various responses may make the other child feel and how they contribute to the game or activity progressing in a positive way. 2. Taking Turns – Using board games is an effective and simple way to practice turn taking. Games range from simple activities with short waiting times between turns to more complex activities with multiple players and longer wait times. Board games provide a very controlled and systematic way for children to understand turn taking which can be applied to other play environments where children have to wait their turn.

3. Cooperating – Plan activities that require cooperation. For example, divide children into groups of 3-4 and have them make a collage about the group. Have the children work together to determine roles such as cutter, gluer, picture locator, writer, etc. Give the children a list of ideas for finding things that represent everyone in their group (sports, favorite foods, people they respect, etc.). The children can use the list as a guide for locating the images. Let the children present their project to the class and discuss how they worked together on the project including any difficulties they had as a team.

4. Compromising – Compromise requires an understanding of other people’s views and a willingness to come to an agreement with the other person. Discuss or role play scenarios involving compromise. A few examples are: One child wants to play one game and another wants to play a different game; Two children want the same seat on the bus; Siblings both want to hold the leash to walk the dog. 5. Being Fair – Giving other people the opportunity to contribute, following the rules, and treating other people well all fall under the umbrella of being fair. Role play situations related to following the rules, treating people equally, and using good judgment in different situations. Have children write stories about times they were treated fairly and times they were treated unfairly and how these situations made them feel.
