BLOCKING SIDEWALKS & TRAFFIC

“Forcing families, seniors andschool children into danger is neveracceptable and will not be toler-ated in our communities,” saidCouncil Member Van Bramer.“Our City’s car dealerships andauto body shops have an obliga-tion to obey our City and Statelaws. If they do not they must bepenalized to the fullest extent ofthe law. These bad corporate neigh-bors are neglecting the safety ofour communities and putting lives

in danger. In an effort to doubledown on our City’s Vision Zeroinitiative we will work with ourlocal precincts to increase enforce-ment and hold guilty establish-ments accountable before some-one gets seriously injured.”

“Northern Boulevard is dan-gerous enough without pedestri-ans having to worry about avoid-ing cars on the sidewalk, whichshould be a sanctuary for the mostvulnerable users of the street,” said

Caroline Samponaro, Deputy Di-rector of Transportation Alterna-tives. “Allowing dealerships to parkcars on sidewalks sends a danger-ous message in a city with a VisionZero policy. We thank CouncilMember Van Bramer for callingattention to this problem and work-ing toward a solution.”

Since taking office CouncilMember Van Bramer has beenworking with the Department ofTransportation as well as local pre-cincts to improve traffic safety in allneighborhoods of the 26th Districtas well as implement Vision Zeroinitiatives that are helping protectpedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

In 2014, following pressurefrom Van Bramer’s office the De-partment of Transportation desig-nated Northern Boulevard a prior-ity under the Administration’s Vi-sion Zero Initiative. Under the des-ignation, Northern Boulevard be-came an arterial slow zone, whichlowered the corridor’s speed limitto 25mph and adjusted traffic sig-nals to reduce dangerous speeding.

50TH ANNIVERSARY OFMEDICARE AND MEDICAID

Rep. Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx),Vice Chair of the Democratic Caucus, re-leased the statement below on the 50th anni-versary of Medicare and Medicaid:

“For 50 years, Medicare and Medic-aid have provided more than just a safetynet – they have provided a lifeline tomillions of Americans. These programsserve those who are most in need, andthey have made a tremendous differencein the lives of so many, but also a differ-ence in how we think about our socialresponsibility in this country.

“We have moved so far from the dayswhen seniors were going without healthcare because they couldn’t afford insurance, and from the days when working familiesworried about how to get health care for

their children. Now we must keep that goingfor the next generation.

“With Medicare and Medicaid, we madea promise that we will take care of those whoneed health care the most – a promise wecontinued with the Affordable Care Act, butour work is far from done.

“I will fight to ensure that the next 50years are marked by the same kind of progressand commitment to strengthening health carein this country as the last 50 years. I promiseto stand up to those who would do away withthe guarantee of Medicare, who would un-dermine Medicaid, and who would shred ournation’s social safety net into threads.

“As we celebrate Medicare and Medic-aid, let us renew our promise to protect, improve, and expand these vital programs.”

“I will fight to ensure that thenext 50 years are marked bythe same kind of progress andcommitment to strengtheninghealth care in this country asthe last 50 years.”

He was good at running things, creating fun and joy. He gave othersa feeling of security and safety hemight not have known himself.

Why would a street near ourmost prominent landmark be re-named for one without riches, mucheducation, or elected office? Be-cause Luke instilled his local pa-triotism, that we have talents toshare, people to help, issues tofight and things to celebrate asimportant as world events.

At one time, Luke’s travelagency, Don Bar Travel at 45-06 (continued on page 5)

46th was known for tours andcruises. But his effects have re-vealed that he had great success asan actor in summer stock, withevery review singling him out as“best” or “stealing the show.”

He had an agent. He hadthe good looks and talent, butsuffered the usual setbacks ofthe thousands who try theirhand at a professional acting. He used his stage make upskills to became a custom wigexpert and was sought afterfor demonstrations. He be-came a successful sellingwholesale hats. He loved totravel and helped out at DonBar Travel, eventually buy-ing the agency.

He launched and led tours allover the world, including Africa,China, India, France, Germany,Canada, Egypt, Turkey, and hisbeloved Ireland. He had such en-thusiasm for other cultures, his cli-ents shared it. And even in situa-tions fraught with mortal danger, such as encirclement by lions, andproximity to a mother gorilla andbaby, he was able to make histravelers feel secure.

LUKE

He loved animals and championed go-rillas. He gave what he had to those whoneeded it more. He made his home a wel-come place for all, where no one could enterwithout hospitality or leave without food.

He became trusted confidant ofthose in office, helped elect some orcomforted others.

ADAMSGETS HISWAY He knew and helped all the “found-

ing fathers” before him. He champi-oned those who deserved it, beforeand after death. His Sunnyside ac-complishments were many.He worked in Gateway Restoration toget the Arch, and he held a demonstra-tion for more cops. He wrote for news-letters and articles for 30 years. Hereinvigorated the Lions Club. Hehelped start Sunnyside Artists. He be-came President of Sunnyside Cham-ber and later was Executive Director. He raised money for s the food pan-tries. He lent a hand in disasters, open-ing his home to all. He was the publicface of Sunnyside. He toured the stateto help Queens.

So what is Luke Adams “way?” In fiveyears will we forget him? Let’s hope not.His “way” was a gift for uniting fellowhuman beings for the benefit of all no matterhow high or low their income, their faith orpolitics. His way was living a life of adven-ture and learning, and concern for others. This recognition of what was good created ahappy hamlet where without his gift, therewere just streets and strangers.

Making A Difference In WoodsideFurther graffiti removal operations oc-

curred Sunday, July 19 as the youth as-sembled based on the successes of the daybefore, pressing north along 61 Street to 34Avenue, then east along this road until 65Street, ignoring the heat and powering along, with tree care, weed removal and cleanupwork occurring mid-way on the southwestcorner of 60 Street and Broadway.

Operations rumbled westward along thesouth side of Queens Boulevard between 50and 58 Streets on both Monday, July 20 andTuesday, July 21, led by the brother and

sister tandem of Jeyson and EvelynGonzalez, restoring all public fixtures alongthis side of the road, and removing all in-stances of graffiti in the observable area.

Kevin Zhang, entering 9th grade atStuyvesant High School in the fall revealedmore of his thinking, and, by extension, theview of all the youth, as to what was beingaccomplished, “I would have just been homedoing the usual, nothing to do, but here, I’mdoing something that is making a differ-ence. I look back and see what we finished, and I can’t believe we did all that.”
