Dancing With Our Stars$25,000 was raised for the Club as well as $4,000 in funds for various charities that

the Stars of the event chose to donate to. 50/50 raffles and door prizes were sold all nightby Sofia Landon Gier, as well as her husband, Ted. The MC’s and Vincent Renda, brokeup the evenings dances with giveaways from Sunnyside Pizza, NY Style Eats, PJHorgans, Pete’s Grill, Sidetracks, Bar 43, as well as donated prizes from MarianneGurrado and Maureen Wallace. And one mustn’t forget the two buffet tables set up oneach side of the room that created snaking lines of hungry attendees, with food cateredby Dazies Restaurant. An open bar with beer from Bar 43 and liquor from LoweryLiquors seemed to have lines all night long. There was no lack of support from bothsmall businesses as well as community members for this important and exciting event.

The true portion of the evening kept event goers on their feet, dancing and swayingas we watched the Stars of our Community shake what they had to win 1st place in thecompetition. Dancers gave their all to the Tango, Hustle, Hip Hop, Latin, Rumba andSalsa as they sashayed across the spot lit dance floor. Hard work did not go unnoticedby spectators. You could see the effort that went into learning these dances. It truly wasjust like the television show, complete with judge commentary after each performance. After each of the dances, red buckets were passed around by volunteers to collectmonetary donations, which determined the winners of the competition…the moremoney in the buckets at the end of each dance, the higher the score for the dance couple. Each dollar raised went to a charity chosen by the Community Star dancers. It wasdifficult to choose only one couple, as they all put so much thought and effort into theirperformances. It is note worthy however to mention that the winner, Gus Chalkias isblind -a true testament to his commitment to the competition and his charity. In the end,the 3 winners of the evening deserved the accolades and applause they received.

Overall, everyone deserved applause. Not only the dancers, but the attendees forknowing what a special event this was, the people who donated their time and money, and the event coordinators, who left every person in the room anxiously awaiting nextyears event. We strongly urge you to come out to next year’s event. This years winners were:

3rd Place: Barbara McNish, who raised $649 to American Cancer Society

2nd Place: Joe Conley of CB2,who raised $1,049, who is donating his winnings to the community

1st Place: Gus Chalkiasraised $1,350 and is donating to the American Heart Association in memory of his Mom

who past from Heart disease.

Statement by Speaker Christine C. Quinn onMayoral Veto of the Outsourcing

Accountability Act“I am disappointed that the Bloomberg administration failed

to approve the Outsourcing Accountability Act. This fiscallyresponsible, common sense legislation would have amended a1994 law to ensure that the City routinely weigh the necessity ofoutside contracts that cost taxpayers billions of dollars each year. The Council’s unanimous vote in favor of the OutsourcingAccountability Act underscores the need for — and merits — of thislegislation. We plan to override this veto as soon as possible.”

Safe Haven ProgramElmhurst Hospital

Center’s Safe Haven programopened on Friday, November4th, which was created fornewborn children in the wakeof two cases in Queens in-volving infants who were leftin a rest room and in ashoebox. New “Safe Haven”signs were unveiled and pro-cedures explained. Under theSafe Haven program, moth-ers who feel desperate, hope-less or in despair can surren-der their infant to a safe place, such as a hospital, police sta-tion or firehouse without fearof prosecution.

Queens Borough President Helen Marshall looks on as a demonstrationof the program is performed by a woman holding a doll and acting asparent who came to Elmhurst Hospital Center’s Safe Haven program.

Reckless MotorcyclesAt Lowery Stop

Dear Editor,I am writing this letter in the hopes that it will spur the 108th

Police Precinct to do something about a dangerous criminalactivity that is taking place on a regular basis near the LoweryStreet subway stop.

Every weekeday, between 5:30-6p, right by (and under) theLowery Street subway stop on 40th Street and Queens Blvd. Motor-cycles are riding up and down the sidewalk (yes, the pedestriansidewalk!) at an incredible speed. They are also racing under QueensBlvd. by the subway exit, whizzing past strap hangers coming home.I myself have seen a motorcycle on the sidewalk in front of the dineron the corner of 40th Street. I know for a fact that the police are awareof this reckless behavior, as I was present when my neighbor calledthe 108th Precinct.

Apparently, the Police will only get involved when an innocentpedestrian is crippled or killed.

Let us demand the Police do something!Scandia Khan,

Sunnyside

Bus Stop TrashDear Editor,

I am writing this letter in the hopes that our elected officials canremedy a longstanding sanitation problem on Queens Blvd and 33rd

Street. The bus stop at this location has become a dumping ground fortrash. People waiting at the bus shelter, in front of the YMCA discardall their trash when they see the bus coming. Since it is a relativelydeserted area, there is no one around to give out littering tickets. Moreimportantly, there are no trash receptacles.

A trash receptacle at this sight would help alleviate the filthyconditions here. This litter no doubt attracts rodents and has becomean eyesore. The YMCA has tried unsuccessfully to clean up the mess. After a few days, the litter is back in full force. Instead of eliminatingnecessary bus stops, as has been done in the past, our elected officialsshould get us much needed waste receptacles at this location.

Sincerely,Francis Gerard,
