DenDekker (D-Jackson Heights) and New York City Councilmember Daniel Dromm (D-Jack- son Heights) today called for greater protec- tions from invasive and erroneous parking violation tactics by New York City traffic enforcement agents. In September 2009, Assemblyman DenDekker first introduced Assembly Bill A9135. This bill requires that traffic agents or other law enforcement authority first verbally direct the operator to move the motor vehicle before issuing a parking violation summons. “This legislation – which I introduced into the State Assembly several months ago - became a necessity once Traffic Agents were given hand-held scanning devices,” Assem- blyman DenDekker stated. “These agents walk up to vehicles while the drivers are waiting for someone to pull out of a parking spot, scan the registration sticker, and issue a violation for double parking. In other cases, agents have acted more like Starsky and Hutch; they pull in front of the vehicle, blocking them in. They then jump out of their vehicle, scan the sticker, and issue summonses, leaving many motorists frightened as well as frus- trated.” During the past year, Assemblymember DenDekker and Councilmember Dromm have led the vanguard against predatory and inva- sive parking control measures in his Queen’s Assembly District. In addition to introducing Assembly Bill A9135, Assemblyman DenDekker introduced Assembly Bill A9133 in September of 2009. This legislation seeks further protections for New York City resi- dents and visitors by requiring the payment of $100 to any motorist who is erroneously issued a parking violation summons that is subsequently dismissed by a Hearing Officer or other competent authority. “Time and time again,” Assemblyman DenDekker said, “motorists are put in double-jeopardy by the City’s predatory parking control tactics. First, they are un- fairly issued a violation summons; then they are required to take time off from work and other responsibilities to contest the er- roneous summonses. The passage of these two legislative initiatives will not only put a dent in the City’s invasive parking viola- tions tactics, but will relieve City residents of some of the undue financial hardships that these haphazard practices cause.” “The law must be made clearer so that traffic enforcement agents understand that they should not be ticketing people for double parking while they are waiting to pull into a parking space,” said New York City Council Member Daniel Dromm. “When mistakes are made, the city should be forced to pay just as the city requires motorists to pay when they do something wrong.” Stressing a common sense approach to parking enforcement practices in New York City, Assemblyman DenDekker indicated that there is a big difference between pre- venting double parking and the blocking of bus stops, and using parking enforcement laws as a way of generating revenue for the City. “In 2008, for example, 14.7% of all issued parking violations were dismissed, and a staggering 17.1% of parking ticket appeals granted reversal. These figures not only indicate the aggressive degree to which parking violations are issued,” Assembly- man DenDekker concluded, “but the shock- ing degree to which they are erroneously and unfairly issued.” ASSOCIATED SUPERMARKET GETS A BLESSING (see page 3) Three partners welcome Father Jerry, Fermin Gutierrez, Sam Callado, Rev. Every neighborhood should have a restaurant like, Floresta.Charming and low key, this Argentine Steakhouse is located on “thepoint” (4108 Greenpoint Ave, Sunnyside). Attentive and friendlystaff offers a welcoming vibe, while busy Chef Cantagallo masters anextensive menu. The mixed greens with cranberries and candiedpecans is a must have as is the Risotto con Hongos Silvestres (wildmushroom risotto) was both filling and delicious, the broccoli rabewas sautéed to perfection in garlic and the herb roasted chicken wasmoist and tasty. The melt in your mouth apple crepe flambé onlymade us crave for more.

If you can’t stay for lunch or dinner, a take out menu is available. This gem gets our thumbs up!

ASSOCIATED SUPERMARKET GETS A BLESSING

On Friday October 8th, Asso-ciated Supermarket celebratedtheir ‘Re-Opening’ with a bless-ing of their market by “FatherJerry,” or Rev. Father GeraldJacewiz, Pastor of St. Raphael’sR.C. Church. After many monthsof hard work and disruption, therenovation of the market was com-plete. Associated invited familymembers, fellow supermarketowners, and friends citywide. The three business partners, SamCallado, Fermin Gutierrez, andAris Duran joined Father Jerry infront of the crowd. Sam acted asspokesman for his partners andthanked everyone for coming. Hetold of the many early problemsthe partners shared when theytook over the store and all thelabor and long hours they andtheir staff had put into it. Samthanked Father Jerry for comingand invited the priest to give theblessing. In contrast to the mo-mentary prayer most employedat such events, Father Jerry gavea heartfelt and lengthy blessingwhich included the holiness ofwork itself, which everyoneseemed to appreciate, even thosenot of the Catholic faith. Fatherled everyone in the sign of thecross and gave words of encour-agement, understanding and hope. The priest concluded with a bless-ing of the workers and all as-sembled by sprinkling a little bitof Holy Water in the name ofFather, Son and Holy Spirit.Associated laid out a feast of foodon the tables, in which everyonewas offered to enjoy. We aregrateful for such nice neighborswho do care and are such a strongpart of this community.
