Rhythm of the Reins Cross Country Barbecue Fundraiser!
Our school leaders have graciously accepted the legacy left by our 2017 School Leaders to support the McIntyre Centre by continuing the sponsorship of one of their horses. On behalf of WoodLinks State School, our leaders are seeking to raise a total of $500 to sponsor “Tonka” who is trained to work with those with special needs. Our sponsorship donation goes toward the ‘caring’ cost for Tonka. This commitment will become a legacy that our 2018 school leaders will
WoodLinks, meet………. Tonka!
On Thursday 15th March our WoodLinks School Leaders will host a fundraising “Sausage Sizzle!” If your child would like to purchase a sausage in bread for the price of $2.00 they will be able to purchase directly from the tuckshop windows at “Big Lunch” or a suitable time around Cross Country commitments. Adults who attend the Cross Country are invited to purchase sausages as well – we will purchase additional sausages and will sell them until stock runs out. If your child has specific dietary needs and would like to purchase Vegetarian sausages please let the wonder-ful ladies in the office, or Mr Crichton ([email protected]) know of such needs in advance. Our sausages are Gluten free. Let us know if your child requires Gluten free bread. Like always, we thank you for supporting our ventures.

Welcome to week 7! This term is flying by! Thank you to all our superhero students who have been showing us their outstanding efforts within the classroom and outside the classroom. It has been pleasing to see our students moving academically. In English this week we are focusing on our simple retells by writing about our book of the week Koala Lou. We have been using our Bump It Up walls to ensure our students are checking their work to achieve higher levels. We are using detail in our sentences to describe the main events within the story and identify the problem and solution. Ask us about the stories we have been reading and what we know about narrative texts. We should be able to talk about why an author writes a narrative! This week in Maths we are continuing to learn about teen numbers in various forms. We have been looking at number lines, MAB blocks, part-part whole and how to represent a number in different ways. We have had a lot of fun exploring number lines and filling in the missing numbers on the line. In science we will be looking at the local habitat and what habitats need to help animals survive within the habitat. We are looking at how habitats can be healthy or unhealthy and what we can do to help habitats. Please remember to keep up the hard work you have been doing at home with the students, we appreciate all that you are doing!

In Mathematics this week we are learning to use positional language. We are also working on following positional language instructions. We are using words like under, beside, behind, through and between.
In English we continue to develop our oral language skills. We are learning to sequence several events from a story that we have heard. We continue to practice our letter names and are working on learning the sounds the letters make too. This week we are working on the sounds for m, d, g, and the short sounds for o and u.
If you read you will succeed! Homework in prep includes daily reading, sight work practice and one sound each day in their Jolly Phonics booklet. Regularly practicing reading is crucial to your child’s literacy development and should be a daily routine at home. Home readers will be changed and sent home every day.
Morning Routine reminder. The school gates open at 8.15. All children and parents are to wait in the central undercover area. Reading club opens at 8.30. This is a great opportunity to further support your child’s literacy learning and connect with the school community. Classrooms open at 8:45, please do not wait outside the classroom before this time.
Please name all personal belongings that your child
brings to school. This includes shoes, socks, spare
clothing, hats, water bottle, snack containers etc.

Yr 2’s Yr 3’s
We are more than half way through the term now and our students are working really hard on being the best learners they can be. Reading groups are continuing every day. Students have been improving their vocabulary knowledge and answering lots of questions about the books they read each week. They are also working on their reading goals. Congratulations to the students who have been selected as Readers of the Week so far. Keep up the great reading. We have started our new unit in English which has students exploring different characters and then creating our own event using a character from a familiar story. Students have been learning about retelling stories using the sequence of orientation, complication and resolution. In Mathematics, students have been collecting data about each other and then using this information to create a picture graph. Students have been asking each other what their favourite fruit is, what pets they have at home and their favourite drinks. Ask your child to show you how to create a picture graph. Please remember to bring home readers back on Wednesday and Friday. Homework is also due back on Friday. Another quick reminder, we are always looking for parent helpers, so if you can help, please contact your child’s teacher.

Dear, Parents and Carers
Welcome to Year 3, week 7! Lots of things
happening, especially in year 3 A, with a new face
joining the team. My name is Mr Purdie and as of last
Monday, the new 3A teacher. I have been a common
face amongst the WoodLinks Community over the
year, however I am very excited to be joining 3A for
the remainder of the year.
This week in English, we are focusing heavily on a
mature writing structure in the persuasive genre. This
will really benefit students as we continue to extend
their knowledge and understanding of this genre as
well as continuing to grow the depth and detail of
their writing.
Guided reading starts our day, so just a friendly reminder to ensure students are arriving to school on time, as if you read, you can succeed. In Maths this week we finished the multiplication unit, and as we welcome the new week we will commence the chance unit. In Science this week we will be going into further depth of the observable features of animals and making connections between the observable features of multiple animals. Just a few friendly reminders: • Homework is handed out on Monday and
students are responsible to complete the work throughout the week and submitting on Friday. Homework includes daily reading, spelling and math problems.

Yr 4’s Yr 5 ’s
Welcome to Week 7! In Science, we have been investigating weathering and erosion. We have been looking at the agents (causes) of weathering and erosion. This biggest two are water and humans. We have been evaluating the impact of weathering and erosion on humans and life as we know it, and we have been creating solutions to erosion problems. Some solutions we have been creating are netting, retaining walls and using plants and roots to hold soil together.
In guided reading, we have been focusing on
synthesising our knowledge of the text. A reader who is
expanding meaning by synthesising is merging new
information with existing knowledge to create an original
idea, see a new perspective, or form a new line of thinking
to achieve new insights (Harvey & Goudvis, 2000).
In order to synthesis a HASS text on explorers
during The Age of Discovery in the 1400’s- 1600’s, our
groups experienced trying to use compasses to
navigate (since GPS systems weren’t invented yet).
They created new perspectives of how difficult and
unsafe the long journeys must have been in wooden
sail boats with primitive equipment.

Welcome to Week 7! This week the year 5 students are beginning writing their own chapter of a fantasy novel. Students have been working on writing character descriptions and describing fantasy settings using figurative language, as well as writing using the Seven Steps narrative graph. As part of their English assessment, students will create a draft, and practice editing their writing using our ‘Move On Up’ wall. Teachers have been impressed by the quality of writing and the imagination of our students. In maths this week we are consolidating our understanding of fractions. Students are building on their understanding by learning to place fractions on a number line and compare the size of fractions. The year 5’s have had fun representing fractions in real world contexts. A reminder that in year 5 we run Homework Club on Fridays. Students who have completed their homework get to go out on the oval for a game. Students who didn’t finish their homework stay in to complete it. All students need to make sure that they take their spelling words home so that they can complete the spelling activities each week.

We are all very excited and counting down the days until we go on our adventure together to Mt Tambourine. Just another friendly reminder that camp fees are due next Friday the 16th March.
We have been busy with Science experiments over
the last couple of weeks. We have made
investigations based around heating using candles as
the heat source and comparing it to using sun as the
heat source. We have talked about -------- being
reversible or irreversible. We have also investigated
solidification and changes when cooking.
Thank you to all those people who have been practising their spelling words at home. A very special Congratulations goes to Mahdia & Lina, who made great improvements in their tests last week. Please remember homework is due every Friday. New homework goes home on a Monday each week.

English: The class has been writing a text called ‘Castle Chaos’. It is a fantasy story about Ugly Oger and Queen Zelda. We have been learning about how to use similes, metaphors, emotion, personification and prepositional phrases. Year 5 is also practicing spelling and comprehension in preparation for Naplan testing. Maths: Students are learning about how to compare equal fractions and put them on a number line in the correct order. We are also comparing fractions that have different denominators and determining which one is bigger. Year 5 is also practicing Mathematics in preparation for Naplan testing. Technology/Health: Students have finished their Behaviour board games and we have enjoyed playing them and reviewing our school rules. In Health we are discussing the values of Resilience, Having a go, Compassion and Understanding. HASS: Year 4 are exploring the journeys of Captain Cook, while Year 5 is learning about the Gold Rush and early life on the gold fields. It has been very nice to see some students complete their homework. As a reminder it goes out on Monday and is returned on Friday. Also, students are expected to read for at least 30 minutes per night. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact me on [email protected] or I am available most afternoons, Tuesday to Friday. \

ATTENDANCE
WWW.WoodLinksWednesdayWeekly07March2018
At WoodLinks SS we believe that attendance matters! By attending school everyday students have the very best opportunity to achieve success. Each week we monitor individual and class student attendance. We celebrate attendance every Monday at Assembly with the announcement of the previous weeks winners. In Prep-Year 2, classes are involved in a weekly horse race and in Years 3-6, students are involved in a superhero race (located outside the library). The WoodLinks Attendance Policy can be found on our website.
‘Every day counts’ is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community. To do this, Every day counts promotes four key messages:
• all children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day
• schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance
• truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices
• attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community.
Attendance target is 95% Recent WoodLinks data shows that the days with the lowest attendance rate are
Mondays and Fridays.
