Physical Education
5th and 6th grade P.E.
The 5th and 6th grade
students finished up their
testing this week. The test
included: Sit-n-reach, Push-ups,
Sit-ups and Pacer. This the
second time we have tested
and the results from the fall
and winter are recorded in
their Chromebooks. The
students will be setting up
goals they would like to reach
on their test soon. We will be
testing in the spring. The next
two units the students will be
doing is Badminton and Floor
Hockey. The focus of these
units will be safety.

Computer
6th Grade Computer
Applications
We've had a great start to the semester, already learning about digital citizenship, cyberbullying, and more! Ask the kids what it means to create a positive digital footprint, or why they should always ask permission before posting someone else's photo! These are great topics to discuss at home, where the majority of internet safety issues can occur. All content, assignments, and assessments for Computer Applications can be found in Google Classroom. Likewise, all grades are regularly updated in Infinite Campus. Please contact me if you have any questions about an assignment or grade and I would be happy to discuss it with you.

World Studies
5th Grade World Studies
Konnichiwa! That means hello in Japanese! The kids are off to a great start in their Japanese unit, and will be learning lots of vocabulary, geography and culture along the way! I dare you to ask them what their Japanese name is during the unit, or about renting pets in Japan! They've been so excited to learn as much as they can about this fascinating culture! As always, if you have connections, or know of anyone who would like to come in to speak to our classes, we would love to have you!

Woodland Wolves Chorus
Unfortunately the KASD Choral Festival that was scheduled on February 17th at Kimberly High School was canceled due to inclement weather. However, a big thank you goes to the Friends of the Performing Arts parent booster group for subsidizing the cost of our concert t-shirts and sponsoring our p izza dinner. Please consider attending their monthly meetings. You can get more information from their Facebook page or through their email: [email protected].
Our final performance will be April 7th, with the 5th and 6th grade band in the Woodland gym. We will also take a trip over to Sunrise during the school day on a date yet to be determined. The girls will resume on February 18, the boys on February 20. There will be combined rehearsals for both boys and girls on March 26, 31, and April 2. We will conclude the April performance with an ice cream party.
Healthy Living 6
th Grade
How great it is to see the 6th graders
again. I truly have missed them. You may
not see it because you look at them every
day, but what a change I have seen since
last January when I had them in Healthy
Living 5. Many are taller than me, so I
did have to remind them that height does
not equal power. :) Not only do I see
the changes in their height, but I have also
noticed personality changes that most
certainly put them in the category of
adolescence. (Really, this is positive!)
After reviewing the Wellness Triangle,
we spent time learning about the
Developmental Assets. These are “traits”
that researchers have found will help kids
to be “happy, healthy and successful”. I
feel very strongly that these assets lay a
solid foundation for young people to
become physically, mentally and socially
healthy. We will discuss all 40 internal
and external traits in the upcoming weeks,
one of which is self-esteem. I feel this is a
great way to begin the semester as many
decisions your sons and daughters will
make will be better if they feel good
about themselves. A high self-esteem will
enable your child to try new things, stand
up for themselves and accept their
shortcomings.
If you have any questions as the semester
goes forward, please contact me.

5th Grade Art
The 5th grade students are creating a watercolor painting inspired by an image they have chosen. The image they selected has a personal meaning to them. The 5th graders will learn how to free draw their picture onto watercolor paper using a few techniques that help them place their image on the paper correctly. The students have learned different watercolor techniques: wet on dry, dry on dry, wet on wet, wash, value scale, crayons, colored pencils, sharpie markers, salt, masking tape, sponge and rubber cement. The 5th graders will use these techniques to help them paint a realistic watercolor painting. Once the students have finished their painting they will select a frame color for behind their painting and fill out a name tag. The students will autograph their painting and will fill out their check-off sheet (self-assessment) on our Google classroom. The paintings will be displayed in the hallways.
The Elements of art we have covered are: Color, Line, Form, Shape, Space, Texture and Value.

Band
5th and 6th grade band
students have the spring
concert music. Now is the
time to be working on the
music for our April concert.
Our theme is Star Wars. It is
sure to be a fantastic
performance.
6th grade band students
need to have Essential
Elements Book 2 by the end
of February. It can be
purchased at the local music
store as well as on Amazon.

The 5th and 6th grade students have
begun the keyboarding unit! Students of
the 5th grade are learning correct hand
positions and how to play folk songs on the
piano keyboard. 6th grade students have
picked up where we left off in 5th grade and
have done great work on learning new
songs. We will continue to play keyboards
throughout quarter 3 and partly into quarter
4.

The Kimberly Area School District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, parental status, sexual

Battle of the Books is a state book trivia competition run by the Wisconsin Educational Media & Technology Association (WEMTA). Every year, students across the state read from a list of 20 books chosen by WEMTA and memorize as many details as possible from those books. Then, they compete to see who knows the most trivia about those books. This year, nine of Woodland's fifth and sixth graders chose to take on the Battle of the Books challenge. Students have been reading from the booklist since October, and then began practicing trivia questions in January. In early February, in order to form our representative team of four, the students competed against each other to determine who knew the most about the books. This year, Woodland's team of four, which includes Sadie Campbell, Kamryn Puls, Kiara Sanders, and Haley Tennessen, proved that they knew the most trivia about the list of 20 books. During the last week of February, those four competed against other students in the state to show how much they remember about the books. Though state results aren't revealed until late March, we can be sure that all of our book warriors from Woodland did a phenomenal job, demonstrating amazing reading recall and comprehension and outstanding teamwork skills.
What a fabulous Battle of the Books year we had! Thank you to all students and staff involved!
Woodland PTO Funding
This school year, PTO has been able to fund a multitude of purchases due to the outstanding support of its families and community. Funds raised from the Fun Run, restaurant nights, Family Fun Night, Box Tops, and school supply kit purchases, have gone directly back into the school. In the coming months, there will be welcome signs near both entrances, additional directional signage inside the building, canvas intramural signs, and a permanent Faces in the Crowd display. New banners will also be installed on the bleacher ends to further student safety. Late last Fall, a new sound system was installed in the 5/6 POD area to fa-cilitate large group learning activities. This winter, new books and manipulative toys were purchased for the 5K classes. Additional funds were also allocated to the elementary end of year carnival and to the 5th grade end of year celebration to make these events better. The PTO also allocated funds to support a group of 4th graders who wish to conduct a virtual visit with well-known children’s author, Gordan Kor-man. Woodland PTO always has the best interest for all students who attend Woodland. Thank you for your
