Dear WCC Family,
Woodbury Community Church exists to
honor God by making more disciples for
Jesus Christ.
That’s it. That is our aim, our mission,
our goal, our consuming passion.
As a church, we want to make disciples
who make disciples. This means that our
sermons on Sunday mornings, the lessons
that are taught to children and youth, the
curriculum that we use for small groups,
and the materials that we use in our
School of Discipleship are going to be full
of Scripture. We believe that the Bible is
the inspired, infallible Word of God. The
Bible is absolute truth. God’s truth is
unchanging and is as relevant today as it
was when it was written down. Biblically
centered preaching and teaching is the
first core value of Woodbury Communi-
ty Church, and we are committed to
that.
When I was on sabbatical this summer, I
heard a pastor say, “When your child
leaves home someday, which of the fol-
lowing would you most want for them?”
He then gave us the following choices:
A Division I Athletic Scholarship
A High IQ to go Ivy League
To Be Popular
To Be a Person of Faith and
Character
If you could only have one, which one
would you choose? Almost every person
in the room chose that they would want
their child to be a person of faith and
character. Then the pastor asked, “How
much time to you devote to the follow-
ing activities?
Developing the athletic abilities of
your children?
Developing your child’s mind for
academic excellence?
Running to or hosting activities for
your child to develop friendships?
Developing your child’s faith and
character?”
Many in the room were struck at how
poorly we were living our priorities.
What do your time, finances, and conver-
sations say about what is most important
to you?
The fall is a great time to take a look at
what our priorities are. I am convinced
that there is no better place to make a
disciple than in the home. The church is
here to come alongside of families in the
raising up of godly children. It is an ave-
nue where Biblically centered preaching
and teaching take place.
October is typically when we begin our
Wednesday night ministry for children.
Unfortunately as of my writing this article
we don’t have enough volunteers to
start. Let’s not be the church that says
that we just didn’t have the time to de-
vote ourselves to the spiritual nurture of
the children God gave us. If you’d like to
help disciple the next generation, I know
that Liz Nelson, our Children’s Ministry
Director would love to talk with you.

This month, our men, high school
aged and up have an opportunity to
discover what it means to live with
authentic manhood. I can’t wait to see
how God uses this new program in
the discipleship of men at WCC.
Brian Tapperson has been leading
similar groups for several years, and I
am looking forward to spending time
with my sons in this study. If you are
a guy at WCC, I want to encourage
you to join us on Friday night, Oct. 9,
at 7 PM for this important evening.
Study after study has shown that
when men get excited about their
walk with Christ and take spiritual
leadership in a home and a church
that home and church experience
genuine revival. Men, God has called
us to be spiritual leaders. Join us on
this journey towards authentic man-
hood.
Finally, if you are at WCC and haven’t
plugged into a small group, I want to
encourage you consider joining one
this month. Small groups are one
more avenue where spiritual growth
happens through biblically centered
teaching. Several new small groups
are launching this month, including
groups for women, men, youth,
couples, and more. For more infor-
mation on small groups, check out
the church webpage or call the office.
I can’t wait to see how God works in
your life this fall. If you’d like to get
together to talk about your own
spiritual life and how you can grow in
your walk with Christ, I’m always
available.
God bless,
Pastor Brian
