How Green is a Wood-burning

stove?

Wood is a carbon-neutral

fuel

The carbon released as it burns has already

been offset by the carbon absorbed during the lifespan of the tree

–net zero carbon footprint.

This makes using a wood-burning stove to heat a room more eco-friendly

than burning non-renewable fossil fuel, such

as coal or gas.

Wood must be completely dried out before use and you'll need a dry, airy and adequately sized storage area to keep your log pile

in a good condition.

The Flue for your Wood-burning stove must be cleaned regularly by a

trained professional, and is around twice the cost of

standard chimney cleaning.

The Stove may not be able to get up to temperature and radiate the heat effectively

The Shape and Size of the room has a huge impact on how easy a stove is to live with.

Whether the house is Open plan or the Stove is in an enclosed room also determines the size.

•If the Stove is Good Quality, then, providing the stove is used according to the manufacturer's instructions, it really doesn't matter.

•Poor quality cast iron stoves have a reputation for cracking

•Poor quality steel bodied stoves have a reputation for warping.

•Steel stoves heat up quicker and deliver heat to the room faster

•Cast iron, the traditional material for stove building, because it is much heavier and provides a greater mass of metal, takes longer to build up heat and distribute it to the room. However; the mass of metal in the stove body will act like a storage radiator dispensing heat to the room a good few hours after the fire has gone out .

•A steel bodied stove will still do this but it won't retain its heat as long.

•So, essentially it's a lifestyle choice – if you need fast heat then choose steel and if you want longer lasting heat, say overnight, then choose cast iron.
