here is intense competition in

the furniture segment from

Southeast Asian countries

which propels our furniture

makers to be innovative by

adapting and adopting some

age-old designs, which are now finding favour with

the Western countries. Take for example, ‘cart furni-

ture’. The simple cart, truly indigenous, has been in

use for centuries and being once again brought in

fashion by AJV Exports.

Similarly, taking inspiration from the commonly

used articles of the past, the company has

embarked towards manufacturing of several such

innovative products, which stands apart from

modern day furniture. As a result of following this

approach, no fresh tree is chopped for making

furniture. The buyers, mostly from the Western

world, seem to be impressed as well as keen to buy

such furniture.

Special care is taken to ensure that the paints and

varnishes used in the making of the furniture are

eco-friendly and non-toxic. Keeping environmental

concerns in mind, the company has taken the con-

scious decision of utilising and reusing old wood,

thus promoting recycling of wood. The final prod-

ucts have a special look and appeal. AJV Exports

also manufactures a few architectural accessories.

Timeless artefacts with reclaimed wood

Jodhpur Crafts, established in

1997, is a design-led company

incorporating world-famous

Indian skills and ideas in combi-

nation with imported machin-

ery from Austria. The company

exports to Europe, USA, Cana-

da and South Africa.

Jodhpur Crafts produces hand-made antique

reproduction furniture with solid wood, like old door

coffee tables, console tables, dining tables, old door

cupboards, etc. and new furniture like bathroom and

kitchen cabinets, coffee tables, chairs, CD chests,

drawers, etc. All pieces are handcrafted with atten-

tion to detail.

Pankaj Surana has the best sourcing team to col-

lect old tribal household items from all over India

and manufacture furniture exactly like the antiques

along with eco-friendly furniture made from

reclaimed wood. Much of the timber used is often

centuries old, worn and characterised over the years

by the elements. The nature of the materials makes

each piece of furniture unique, full of character and

history.

The company takes time to search for the right

piece of reclaimed wood for each project and piece of

furniture. Items are designed to work together with

the natural contours and colours of the recycled

wood which allows for the natural nature and char-

acter of the wood to shine through. Pankaj Surana

believes that by taking a piece of wood that has been

shaped by the elements over hundreds of years, or

reclaimed from a old mill/old house that has been

demolished and working on the wood so it becomes a

gift or functional piece of furniture, is a beautiful

process.

othra International’s speciality for

long has been in the manufacture of

products for daily utility as well as

those for gifting. The products,

using metal sheets, carved with tra-

ditional Rajasthani motifs, over

wood have a sublime beauty and have been revived

by Bothra’s talented craftsmen. Such items were

manufactured in the past, but forgotten for decades.

Buyers from East European and Middle East

nations have a fascination for such products though

styles and motifs preferred in these two markets are

different. In recent times, buyers from Spain and

South Africa have shown interest in such products

and there is no dearth of designs since Jodhpur is like

a large repository — almost inexhaustible — of

Rajasthani folk arts. Though Bothra’s craftsmen

borrow such motifs liberally, small alterations are

made to meet the preferences of buyers.

The company has recently entered the furniture

segment and the designs adopted are contemporary

ones. These are preferred by European buyers. Both-

ra is also planning to enter customised furniture

manufacturing. Among its other products are frames

for paintings and photographs that have the looks

and styles of a bygone era.

ente has not followed the usu-

al route of follow-the-leader

in the manufacture of handi-

crafts. As a buyer of Indian

handicraft products, based in

Holland for ten long years, he understands the

mindset of European buyers.

Though CASA Ambiente has been making

furniture, the company is actively engaged in

manufacturing handcrafted products. Most of

these products are designed and created by P K

Bhandari. His designs are meant for an Euro-

pean audience: naturally, the designs and colours

that are used — are of utmost importance.

While the quality of material used by

CASA Ambiente has been becoming better,

the company keeps an eye to ensure that it is

eco-friendly in nature. P K Bhandari keeps con-

tinuous observation on the raw material used to

ensure that it conforms with the environmental

he company believes in offer-

ing concepts — be it bedroom,

dining room or a living room

— so that the end-users do not

have to hunt for matching

accessories. The company has

the largest showroom in town where they have

displayed several types of settings of bedroom,

dining room and living room furniture and there

is a separate section for bar and bar counters.

There is also a section on outdoor and office

furniture.

Making furniture is easier in comparison to cre-

ating a concept as the latter requires a lot of cre-

ativity and innovativeness. The designs of pillows

or bolsters, normally taken for granted, can make

or mar an entire setup. Then comes the question

of colour and tone of wood, which through var-

nish, polish or lacquer has to match the colour

and tone of the upholstery.

Chandra Shekhar Exports has furnished several

top-end establishments but does so only to

achieve professional satisfaction rather than look-

ing for economic returns.

reative Point has a vast range of

handcrafted products and professes

that it is meant for niche clientele

and marketing is merely through

word-of-mouth. The reason is sim-

ple: the products are not mass pro-

duced and no two designs or items are similar look-

ing. Each product item has a tag of exclusivity and

is ideal for gifting or own as well.

It manufactures both decorative or display and

utility items. The materials used are wood, metal

sheets (brass, bonze, iron and white metal) and

bones and horns. Though the competition is intense

in such products, the company has held its own due

to its exclusivity. The Gulf countries are its biggest

market. The next in the line are the European coun-

tries. The other markets it has a presence in are

Spain, Turkey and the United States of America.S K Parakh

he company has been in busi-

ness for a little over a decade

and has made its mark in

European markets. It is the

trendy style that has

impressed buyers in those

markets. Again, these gift items, be it of utility or

plain display, are manufactured from wood and met-

al pieces, normally considered as waste.

Cross Country believes that adherence to quality

has helped to market its products in the European mar-

ket comprising buyers who are highly critical of quali-

ty. The most important aspect is seasoning of wood to

the optimal level to withstand the extreme tempera-

tures in Europe to prevent warping. It is also essential

that the kind of polish or paints used is lead-free.

The gift items that are manufactured have a typ-

ically European touch and the ethnic styles of their

culture and countryside are those that buyers can

relate to. Manish Jhanwar frequently visits many of

these countries to understand changes in the buyers’

preference. Cross Country understands these well in

advance to manufacture and market them at the

right time.

urio Crafts, a two-decade old

company specialises in prod-

ucts using iron, so much so

that almost 90 per cent of its

products are made of iron. It

also uses glass, other metals

and terracotta and integrates it with iron products.

The company uses state-of-the-art machines to

achieve quality in the manufacturing processes.

Though the in-house design team prepares

designs, many a time, buyers suggest certain changes

at the prototype stage, which are then incorporated

at the production level. At times, buyers come with

their own designs for production.

Most of the products are meant to be given as

gifts during the festive season. The company also

manufactures utility products used in kitchens

along with wine racks, candle holders, towel hang-

ers and soap holders. The list is endless. Garden

accessories are a popular item in its list of exports.

The company has sent huge shipments of its prod-

ucts to the United States of America and is now

exploring the European markets. Though it

exports to other countries like Australia, New

Zealand and South Africa as well, the volume of

export is miniscule.

Though the products manufactured by Desert

ine Arts & Exports manufac-

tures old-style furniture,

some of which are patterned

on the furniture used in royal

households in the past. But

that has not limited the cre-

ative abilities of Shreyanssh Jain. He has branched

out to manufacture contemporary style furniture.

The unit produces its contemporary creations in

bulk since there is no handcrafting involved.

Looking at the demand for furniture with inlay

work, Fine Arts & Exports creates these for markets

in Europe. In the past, inlay work was done with

ivory but today that has been substituted with simi-

lar looking high-grade plastic. The work is painstak-

ing and it takes weeks to manufacture a six-seat or

ten-seat dining table.

In addition, Shreyanssh Jain is also into manu-

facturing cotton fabrics. The fabric is hand printed

primarily for ladies' summer garments. At times

buyers provide the designs and colours to be used

and the finished products are supplied to the Euro-

pean markets.

The unit is also into manufacturing high-end gift

items with traditional Rajasthan motifs but they are

created on specific orders.

ora Exports has been manufac-

turing memorabilia for the

defence forces, police and other

organisations that has the tradi-

tion of presenting these to their

personnel for the past 50 years.

The company continues to receive

orders for the manufacture of such

memorabilia from Commonwealth nations.

Based on the success of its original business,

Gora Exports has diversified into making gift prod-

ucts that are typically aimed at Commonwealth

countries. All the products are handmade and hand

painted. Many of these products are not merely

meant for mantelpieces, but can be for everyday use

as well. Many of the scenes painted on the items are

day-to-day scenes of British countryside which are

popular with buyers.

Some products are painted with Chinese scenes,

such as waterfalls, cascading river or a sailing boat,

which has a niche market in a few Western countries.

The company’s main markets are: Europe, Australia,

New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

uru Industries is, perhaps, the

oldest furniture manufacturer in

Jodhpur. Established in 1947, it

has marched on, never looking

back. The focus on exports is

only a recent phenomenon in its

history. The company has fur-

nished a few of the well-known, branded hotels in

the country though its production, almost 90 per

cent, goes to the United States of America and the

rest to European countries.

Today, the company is into high-end design fur-

niture for the USA and European markets. The main

pieces are complimented by equally matching acces-

sories, admittedly for high-end buyers. It is paying

as much attention to decorative and gift products

created from wood, metals, glass and even bones and

horns.

The decorative and utility products are also

unique and innovative in design like coat hangers

fabricated out of skis. There are candle holders using

moose horns as the base. The company also believes

that no design would last more than one season and

hence the stress on. innovation.

aswani Art Exports

manufactures furniture,

antique look-alikes as

well as restoration of

originals. While a few

talk highly about

straight-line, solid wood contemporary furniture,

there is demand for painted furniture as well. The

treatment is entirely different and colour and

quality of paint used is equally different for the

Western market. Apart from being lead-free and

toxic-free, the company has to follow a lot of

compliance parameters.

Restoration of antiques and also reproduction

of identical antiques is another of the company’s

speciality. Haswani Art Exports obtains old

objects from all parts of the country and restores

them to their original shapes. Suresh Haswani

avers that some objects are copied and replicas

made as per the buyers demand. A few of them are

converted into daily, household utility items.

The company also infuses a lot of innovative

ideas in manufacturing gift items — be it for decora-

tive display or for daily use — using wood, metals,

glass and even clay. The clay products are so fine

that they give the impression of bronze.

ithin a decade, Heritage has

established itself as the fore-

most handcrafted leather furni-

ture with metal structures pro-

ducer. The handcrafted leather

gives a rustic look and has spe-

cial appeal over fully processed leather. Very few in

the world have this speciality, the company avers.

It has wide-ranging products from bar stools,

chairs, arm chairs and even small leather-top tables.

It has specially designed sofa sets, too. Even small

bins for keeping newspapers or magazines are in its

product range.

The products are sold in the United States of

America, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and even

non-traditional markets like Cyprus, Egypt and

Morocco. In the last couple of years it has

entered into manufacturing mainline wooden fur-

niture as well. Also steel chairs with a rustic look

are in their portfolio. Be it leather upholstered

chairs or steel chairs, they can all be stacked thus

saving space.

harad Jain has been making decorative,

gift and utility items using only metal

sheet and metals such as iron, brass and

bronze. The products manufactured are

meant for the Western countries and his

major buyers are in the USA.

The products created by Indian Artware are country-specif-

ic. Consumers in East European countries, for example, prefer

decorative and gift items with designs that are distinct from

those marketed in Western Europe and the USA. Sharad Jain

has extended his portfolio to include European markets.

Indian Artware’s design team keeps on experimenting with

raw material. As a result, none of the creations are repeated.

Jain believes that it is extremely essential to be a step ahead

and anticipate the changes the markets pose. In fact, many

of Indian Artware’s craftsmen come up with remarkable

design ideas that are incorporated in the portfolio.

T

he folk art of every region is

distinctive and has its own

charm. However, since the sup-

ply of many art forms is dwin-

dling, J.P. Arts has decided to

reproduce identical products,

ensuring that the reproductions are as good as the

originals. The products come in wood, metal and

glass. The company also undertakes reproductions of

paintings using similar kind of paints as used in the

original.

J.P. Arts emphasises that in order to create look-

a-like copies, artisans have to observe each antique

and measure accurately before embarking on repro-

ductions. Also, the materials used are as close to the

originals otherwise reproductions could lose their

charm.

J.P. Arts also manufactures furniture for indoor

and outdoor use. Painted furniture is its forte though

it manufactures straight-line, solid wood contempo-

rary furniture as well. The paints and glues used are

lead-free and toxic-free as Western buyers insist on

such products. The company also manufactures high

value marble products such as, arches, fountains and

trellis used in partitions which can be used indoors as

well as outdoors.
