When Marcellus uttered his immortal line about the state of Denmark in Act One, Scene Four of Hamlet, he wasn’t strolling through Fre-deriksberg Have on a summer’s day, hand-in-hand with his lover,

contemplating an afternoon of leafy bliss and sinful is.

No, he said it overlooking the battlements of a fog-engulfed castle, freezing and fed-up, on a day not that much different from today. And to be fair, nothing’s changed in the 400 years since the play was written. February continues to be a month in which winter overstays its welcome and the aptly-named SAD (Sea-sonal Affective Disorder) takes over.

Short of going on holiday there is no remedy, well until now that is, because an idea that started as a whisper in empty hotel rooms, half-filled smoky jazz venues and backstage fashion parties has metamorphosed into seven extremely good reasons for staying put and enjoying your February in Copenhagen.

Welcome to the first official year of Copenhagen Wondercool, a festival organised by Wonderful Copenhagen that following a successful pilot last year is returning to redefine your least favourite month, and transform this city of ours into a beehive of activity, as hundreds of venues put on events attended by thousands of revellers.

Wondercool Copenhagen is not just one festival, it’s seven: the winter editions of the Copenhagen Art Festival, Copenhagen Cooking and the Copenhagen Jazz Festi-val, the Copenhagen Fashion Festival, the FROST Festival, and events and activities organised by the Danish Design Centre and Danish Architecture Centre.

Over the next four weeks we will be trying to keep up with the multitudes of events, and in each edition focusing on at least one of the themes. To kick things off, we’re starting with fashion, design, art and architecture. Week two will include a special section on jazz, week three cooking, and week four FROST, a festival that will take us rocking into next month.

It promises to be a fabulous February, and organisers are already drawing up plans to continue this in the years to come – which is great news for those of us in dire need of a lift at this time of year. If this won’t banish the winter blues, nothing will.

The copenhagen art Festival’s main focus is con-temporary art. This February event, which takes place at five different art centres and public loca-tions across the city, is a taster of the main fes-tival, scheduled this year from august 24-sep-tember 2. many of the Danish and international contributing artists will take inspiration from the theme of ‘community’ to create new works, while there are several events planned, including per-formances at højbro square, debates, and the showing of a specially-commissioned art video on the theme of community.

Designs on youR AttentionVictor hugo, a famous 19th century French writer and visual artist, once said: “winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart.” This scholarly-metaphoric quote is soon going to be a thing of reality! moving on from blue January, romantic February is going to bring spring into our lives with a host of winter themes in copenhagen under the wondercool copenhagen festival banner, three of which are architecture, art and design.

wondercool copenhagen promises to marry the abstract visions of art with the concrete canvas of design and architecture, to exhibit the vibrant and colourful part of the city defying the gloomy-wet-cold weather.

For wondercool copenhagen, the copenhagen art Festival, the Danish Design centre and the Danish architecture centre are presenting a wide array of mind-boggling events that no art lover can resist.

Copenhagen Fashion Festival - Various locations in Copenhagen; throughout February; www.copenhagenfashionfestival.comBy Malene Ørsted

Copenhagen Fashion Week is the fashion industry’s event for designers, stylists, hairdresser, and

so on, that takes place each August and February. But since 2008 it has also been possible for

the public to take part in the fashionable festivities through the Copenhagen Fashion Festival,

which once again this year is taking place in co-operation with Wonderful Copenhagen and Copenha-

gen’s city centre.

Copenhagen Fashion Week started as an industry platform for selling and buying. Later on it became

an umbrella for fairs, shows, showrooms, and all the communication around it, but it remained a

closed industry event. The Copenhagen Fashion Festival is everything that happens in Copenhagen in

relation to Fashion Week, and it’s open to everybody. It’s made up of different events, exhibitions and

parties, and includes lots of special offers and contests.

The festival is simply supplying a demand that has been out there for some time. “Many people called

in to ask if they could participate in anything during Fashion Week,” recalls Julie Christine Kühne, the

project co-ordinator for Copenhagen Fashion Festival. “So it’s based on a specific interest. We think

that when you create a big event you should include the entire city, so you 24/7 get the buzz of Fash-

ion Week everywhere you go.”

The inclusion of the city began with the erection of two big screens at City Hall Square and Højbro

Plads that are still there today. Here people could watch different fashion shows, interviews backstage

and the red carpet live.

While some events stretch longer than Fashion Week – for instance, Fashion Talks is ongoing through-

out February – most will end at the same time as Fashion Week on 5 February.

Northern Women in ChanelDesignmuseum Denmark, Bredgade 68, Cph K; starts Feb 1, ends April 8, open Tue-Sun 11:00-17:00; tickets: adults 75kr, Wed free; 3318 5656; www.designmuseum.dk

like you’ve never seen it before

Photography duo Peter & Ingela Klemntz Farago have

created a coffee table book and touring exhibition called

‘Northern Women in Chanel’ in which Scandinavian

and Baltic supermodels wear prêt-à-porter and couture

Chanel pieces dating back to the ‘20s.

The exhibition ‘Northern Women in Chanel’ takes place at the

crossroads between French design and northern beauty. You get

the chance to see some of Scandinavia’s and the Baltic countries’

most sought-after supermodels dressed in Chanel pieces posing in

outdoor scenery.

The couple behind the book and exhibition, Peter Farago and Ingela

Klemetz Farago, are not only husband and wife, but also a visionary

photography duo. They took the pictures during 2010 and 2011,

and in collaboration with Chanel they created a 384-page portfolio

featuring 45 Northern supermodels – including Helena Christensen

and Freja Beha Erichsen - only wearing the fashionable Chanel fab-

rics.

“It was a fashion journey,” Ingela told Vogue. Together with her hus-

band she shot close to 300 different looks - a number only made

possible due to unlimited access to Chanel’s archives. The picture

process took around a year and a half, and most of the 45 editorials

are shot in Sweden and across the Nordic sites.

The project started after the couple had shot some fashion ads for

Chanel. They pitched the idea to the design house’s Baltic division

and were offered full access to clothing pieces from both the label’s

current collections and archives: prêt-à-porter as well as couture.

Coco Chanel is one of the previous century’s most influential fash-

ion designers. She is known for going against tradition - for instance,

she was one of the first to dress women in trousers. Her creations

of casual clothes for women have today become classics in most

fashionistas’ eyes. With the project, the Faragas have managed to

combine the classic Chanel designs and photography in a new way.

“Thanks to Farago’s sense of the pictorial, these photographs not

only celebrate the fascinating designs they record, but also produce

sensational reinventions, demonstrating how fashion, photography

and art can come together,” noted a the press release about the

exhibition.

Every little detail in the book has been carefully thought out, so

every creation and surrounding was picked specifically for each

model.

One of the models is Denmark’s Freja Beha Erichsen, who deco-

rates the cover of the book, and who, among others, has been a

muse to the creative director, and contributor to the preface of the

book, Karl Lagerfeld.

“The models have been carefully chosen to represent an aesthetic

flair for fashion, but also a desire to convey a sense of humanity,”

the organisers of the event said.

All models, stylists and others working on the book did the work

for free, and all the profit from sales of the book are donated to the

organisation Save The Children and the building of girls’ schools in

Baltic countries.

The touring exhibition started at Fotografiska in Stockholm in June,

and has now finally arrived in Copenhagen. Consisting of more than

the 50 large prints, the Danish exhibition has been provided with

a series of black and white portraits of the participating models.

These photos will also be published in an exclusive limited edition

booklet (just 100 copies), which have been signed by the photog-

raphers.
