QUiCK FaCtSTigers vs. Marshall

This is the 17th meeting between Memphis and Marshall, and its the Thundering Herd who have the upper hand in the series history, 11-5. Memphis had won five straight against Marshall beginning in 2010, but had that streak snapped in a game at Huntington last year in a 65-54 loss.

About Marshall Marshall is guided by a new head coach since that last meeting. Matt Daniel took over the Thunder-ing Herd program in May of 2012. Daniel is somewhat familiar with the Mid-South, as he spent four seasons as the head coach at the University of Central Arkansas, building the Sugar Bear program from NCAA Division II to an NCAA Division I team that posted three straight 20-win seasons, includ-ing two postseason tournament appearances. Daniel is no newcomer to Marshall either, having been recruited to the Thundering Herd by Billy Donovan. He brings the up-tempo style of play with him, a transition that has been tough for a team that played Royce Chadwick’s offensive system last year. The result is a team that is 6-13 on the season and is mired in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. Sophomore guard Shay Weaver is the team’s leading scorer at 9.8 ppg and ranks 53rd in the NCAA in three-point field goals made per game with 2.47 a night and 69th in three-point field goal percent-age at 36.4.

End of the First Half of Conference Play The game against Marshall will mark the end of the first half of the conference slate for the Tigers. Memphis will have then seen every team from the Eastern Division of Conference USA and a trio of teams from the West (Houston, Tulane & Rice). The Tigers are hoping to stay above the .500 mark and to even match the 200-11 team’s first half of the conference slate with a 5-3 record. Since Melissa McFerrin has come to Memphis, the Tigers are a combined 18-14 in their first eight games of the season.

Success in the Classroom Six members of the women’s basketball team were recognized at halftime of the men’s basketball game against East Carolina as members of the Fall 2012 Tiger 3.0 Club. Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, Asianna Fuqua-Bey, Krishunda Harvey, Pa’Sonna Hope, Courtney Powell and Mooriah Rowser all had a GPA of 3.0 or higher to earn the recognition. Abdul-Qaadir, Fuqua-Bey, Powell and Rowser were also named to the Dean’s List for having a GPA of at least 3.5.

Double-Double For Dickson With her 18 points and 12 rebounds, Nicole Dickson posted her fourth double-double of the sea-son and the 14th of her career. The senior forward set a school record last year with seven consecu-tive double-doubles, but has been boxed out a bit more this season. With the graduation of Jasmine Lee, she’s drawn a little more attention on the glass. The back-to-back double-doubles are the first for her since last season. Her 14 career double-doubles ranks her tied for ninth in Memphis history with Wanda Simpson (1982-86).

Memphis double-doublesNicole Dickson, 30 pts, 13 reb. at UT Arlington, 11/21/12Nicole Dickson, 10 pts, 10 reb. vs. UALR, 12/7/12Nicole Dickson, 20 pts, 10 reb. vs. UCF, 1/27/13Nicole Dickson, 18 pts, 12 reb. vs. Rice, 1/31/13Asianna Fuqua-Bey, 14 pts, 11 reb., Southern Miss, 1/13/13Ariel Hearn, 23 pts, 10 reb., Tennessee Tech, 12/31/12Pa’Sonna Hope, 13 pts, 12 reb., at East Tennessee State, 11/30/12

Keep it Down The Tigers’ goals are quite obvious. Since league play began, Memphis is 0-3 when giving up 70 or more points and is 3-0 when holding their conference foes in the 50s. Memphis has scored between 60-66 points in six of seven league games, so it’s not the Tigers totals that is changing as much as it is the points being given up on the other end.

Shooting Percentages Slowing Down As always happens when the team gets into league play, more thorough scouting reports often mean more contested shots. In the non-conference schedule, Memphis shot over 43 percent in 10 of 14 games. Since league play has begun, Memphis has hit over 43 percent in just one of seven games (the win over Southern Miss).

Driving at the Rim Memphis has faced a lot of zone lately (see shooting percentage note above). Settling for jumpers is not a huge part of the Tigers’ game, but getting to the paint is. In games where Memphis has at-tempted 20 or more free-throws, the Tigers are 8-2. In games where they are held under 20 attempts, they are 4-5. The reverse side of that graphic is when Memphis gives its opponents 20 or more attempts at the free-throw line, the Tigers are 6-7, including 2-3 against league opponents.

Taking Care of the Ball Memphis committed just 11 turnovers in the win over Rice, the second-fewest on the season for the Tigers. The best? Just 10 turnovers in the loss to UCF in the previous game.

Road Wins in League Play & The 10 C-USA Wins Mark Memphis finished the regular season with a winning record in Conference USA road games for the first time under Melissa McFerrin. The Tigers were 6-2 on the road in conference games with wins at Southern Miss, at UAB, at East Carolina, at SMU, at UCF and at Rice. Road Wins ...................................................... rECorD BrEaKDoWnDickson Looking for 1,500th Point; Passes Brittany Carter’s Scoring Mark

Nicole Dickson is knocking on the door of another benchmark in scoring, heading into Sunday’s game with 1,481 career points, 19 shy of the 1,500 point mark. Last year, Dickson was held to just six points in that game at Rice. The 1,481 points places Dickson 12th in the Tiger scoring charts, now ahead of former teammate Brittany Carter (2009-12) and just 13 points behind Wanda Dillard’s (1982-86) mark of 1,494 that cur-rently ranks 11th all-time. In her last meeting at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, Dickson was just 3-for-12 from the field and finished with nine points.

Dickson to the Top 10 in Rebounds Everyone knows Dickson’s reputation in the scoring column, where the senior is looking to break into the top 10 in school history in scoring. But she is already in the career top 10 in one category at Memphis -- rebounding. Her 708 rebounds ranks ninth in program history and she is five shy of tying Ashley Thornton’s (2006-09) mark of 713 for eighth place.

Hearn Surpasses a Dickson Mark Freshman Ariel Hearn is already rewriting some of the marks her teammate Nicole Dickson put in the record book. Hearn enters Sunday’s game with 304 points this season, which is ninth all-time for any Memphis freshman in school history. Who did she pass at 302 points for 10th all-time? Nicole Dickson. Hearn’s 83 assists in her freshman season is already the fourth-best mark of any Tiger freshman in history. Ruth Ann Forsythe holds the freshman single season mark of 101 assists, just 31 assists away, and is the only freshman in school history to dish out 100 or more assists in a season, a mark within Hearn’s reach with nine conference games remaining.

Fuqua-Bey Going to Work Freshman Asianna Fuqua-Bey has started the last eight games for Memphis. For her young Mem-phis career, she has almost as many rebounds (117) as points (123). The forward is playing out of position behind Nicole Dickson, but in order to get her on the floor, the Tigers use her at the five spot to get rebounding cleaned up. She has responded with 56 of her 117 rebounds off the offensive glass.

Jackson Posts Second Double-Digit Outing Freshman guard Jaymie Jackson posted her second career double-digit scoring effort in the win over Rice, finishing with 11 points on 3-for-10 shooting. But the guard worked her way to the lane, earning trips to the free-throw line, where she knocked down 5-of-6 attempts while playing a season-high 28 minutes off the bench. She came off the bench after being ill earlier in the week and missing practice.

Fuqua-Bay Just Misses Second Double-Digit Night Asianna Fuqua-Bey has her first career double-double under her belt. She almost added a second double-digit rebounding night, finishing with nine rebounds in the win over Rice. She tied a career-high with six offensive rebounds in 31 minutes. The Chicago native had a tough night on the offensive end, and was held without a field goal for the first time since the game at Saint Louis, where she played just four minutes. She finished with one point in the Rice win.

Hope Just Misses Double-Digit Scoring Night After scoring double-digits in three straight games against Prairie View A&M, East Tennessee State and UALR (all losses), junior post Pa’Sonna Hope has not seen double-digit scoring since. She almost got back there on Thursday night, finishing with eight points on 4-for-7 shooting, her best scoring outing since the win over Southern Miss at FedExForum to open Memphis’ home C-USA schedule.

30 is the New 20 Nicole Dickson scored 31 points in the loss at Tulane. She was 12-for-24 from the field in that game, and accounted for exactly half of Memphis’ points (the Tigers lost 72-62). The 31-point game was the fifth game of the season that Dickson has gone over the 30 point mark. Dickson is one of three players in NCAA DI women’s basketball that has scored 30 or more points in five or more games this season. She is currently tied with Georgetown senior Sugar Rodgers with five and trails only FIU junior Jerica Coley who has done so in eight games and who leads the country in scoring with 24.4 ppg. Dickson seems to have no problem finding points the road. Four of her five 30-point efforts have come on road trips.

2012-13 MEMPHIS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GAME NOTESuNIvErSITy Of MEMPHIS

Melissa McFerrin was named the University of Memphis women’s basket-ball coach on April 19th, 2008, becoming the fourth coach in the program’s mod-ern history.

McFerrin, the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year, spent the previous four seasons at American University in Washington D.C. Her 2007 American team advanced to the Patriot League championship game and her 2008 squad won the school’s first-ever Patriot League regular season championship, finishing with an 18-14 overall record. That team won 11 of 12 games down the stretch, advancing to the post season for the first time since 1997-98 with a WNIT bid. In four seasons at American, McFerrin compiled a 50-70 record and guided five different players to all-conference honors, while two other players earned all-freshman honors.

Prior to her stint with American, McFerrin was an associate head coach at the University of Minnesota from 2002-2004. She helped Minnesota to a 50-15 record, including an NCAA Final Four appearance in 2004 and a Sweet Sixteen berth in 2003. She signed two recruiting classes ranked in the top 20 at Minne-

sota, and helped guide two Kodak All-Americans, including WNBA player Lindsey Whalen. McFerrin’s time at Minnesota came after a five-year association with the WNBA. She began her affiliation with the WNBA as an assistant coach with the New York Liberty from 1997-1999, assisting with coaching duties for the 1997 WNBA Championship runner-up Liberty squad. She moved to the Washington Mystics as an assistant coach in 1999-2000, taking over as the Mystics’ General Manager in 2000. As the GM, she guided a team that made its first-ever WNBA play-off appearance in 2000, and handled all player trades and draft decisions before joining the coaching staff at Minnesota. Her WNBA stint followed a 14-year coaching career that made three different stops. McFerrin began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wayland Baptist University in Texas from 1983-84. She was then hired as an assistant coach at Central Michigan University, where she helped the Chippewas to a 95-77 record in her six seasons, including a 1985 Mid-American Conference championship. She left Central Michigan in 1990 to become an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at The Ohio State University. At Ohio State, she helped the Buckeyes to a 118-90 record and a 1993 Big Ten champion-ship and an NCAA National Championship runner-up. That 1993 squad benefited from a 1992 McFerrin re-cruiting class that was ranked No. 1 in the nation, one of seven Buckeye recruiting classes to be nationally-ranked under McFerrin’s watch at OSU. In 1996, McFerrin helped guide the Buckeyes to the NCAA Second Round before leaving the following season for the WNBA. A native of Cassville, Mo., McFerrin was a four-year letterwinner and starting point guard for the University of Missouri Tigers from 1979 to 1983. She helped Missouri to a 1983 Big Eight tournament championship and NCAA tournament berth and a 1982 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance, earning Big Eight honorable mention honors and Scholar-Athlete awards along the way. She graduated cum laude with a degree in secondary education from Missouri in 1983, and received her master’s degree in physical education from Central Michigan in 1988.
