The Van Pels, another Jewish family originally from Germany, join the Franks in hiding. The final person was Fritz Pfeffer (a family friend and dentist). In total, there were 8 people hiding in the attic.

Peter Van Pels was 16 years old. He and Anne likedeach other, and he even gave Anne her first kiss.

For 2 years, everyone hid from the Nazis in this attic. Anne frequently wrote in her diary, writing about her hopes and dreams,her family and their sad situation.

Upon finding out that his wife and daughters had bothdied, Otto was given Annes diary (that was kept by a neighbor). Otto Frank later commented that he had not realized Anne had kept such an accurate (exact) and well-written record of their time in hiding.

Otto gave the diary to a Historian. A newspaper article was writtenabout the diary, and in the summer of 1947, the first1,500 copies of Annes diary are published (printed) in Holland.

Since it was first published in 1947, Anne Frank's diary has become one of the most powerful memoirs (personal story) of the Holocaust.

Its message of courage and hope during tragic times has reached millions of readers. The diary has been translated into 67 languages with over 30 million copies sold.
