Native Americans in the Revolution
• Avoided the war at first• Retaliated to attacks on the
frontier•Many (including the Cherokee)
supported the British because they promised to return land

African Americans in the Revolution• Some (very few) served as soldiers in the
Continental Army• South Carolina fought the idea of slaves serving as
soldiers; insisted they could only work as cooks or other jobs that didn’t require weapons
• Eventually, they agreed that up to 1/3 of the militia could be made up of slaves
• Some slaves served in partisan bands• The British promised freedom to those who would
fight for them
