Spotlight on Gianna J. Arnold

• 1. Tell us about your current position or company. I am an equity partner with Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr LLP, a full-service law firm that offers clients the national reach and sophisticated experience of a large firm and the local connections and value of a boutique firm. I chose to join Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr due to their Life Science Practice Group and their start up initiatives. My favorite aspects of my practice are life science agreements and intellectual property strategy as these provide an opportunity to draw from my range of schooling and experience (in science, business and law).

• 2. You have such a diverse educational background. Did you always know what your professional goals were and were your degrees tailored to that plan? I obtained my degrees in areas that I found interesting at the time. No master plan. I had actually planned on studying medicine but learned that I have a tendency to faint around those in pain, and figured that would make it difficult to do a residency! I love all aspects of science and wanted to focus on the path from idea to consumer.

• 3. What are some of the biggest challenges women still face in the life sciences? Unconscious bias remains a large challenge. Perhaps worse than overt discrimination as it is

subtle and hard to overcome. Interestingly, even those within a discriminated group will hold biases against their own group. At least, if we each become aware of our internal biases, we can make an effort to see through them.

• 4. WIB’s theme for this year is “Lift while you climb”. What does this mean to you and how do you incorporate this in your professional life? We should all take an effort to talent spot, mentor and champion one another. This can be done by highlighting another’s good works, forwarding and/or providing growth opportunities, and taking the requisite steps to enable the success of good women. We generally tend not to promote ourselves – let’s overcome this by promoting one another. I strive to practice these important steps.

• 5. Tell us how you got involved with Women in Bio, what you do for the organization, and what being a part of WIB means to you? I went to the first annual dinner in 2001. I was part of an early stage company and found the dinner an excellent opportunity to learn best practices and meet others similarly situated. In the early years, I served on or chaired various committees related to programming, the Annual Dinner, and the like. I served as President Elect, President and President Emeritus from 2008 to 2011. WIB-Capital Region, Author Amita Shukla Speaks to Members about Mastering the Entrepreneurial Mindset During the Capital Region’s first Northern Virginia event, members from Frederick, MD, Fredericksburg, VA and everywhere in between, met for casual networking followed by a presentation on “Mastering the Entrepreneurial Mind: Leading Change that Changes the World” from Amita Shukla, CEO of Vitamita. Amita started her presentation by describing what makes an entrepreneur successful and how you can harness those traits in your day-to-day life. We also discussed the 1D 2D 3D Mind Framework and how we use all three states in our lives. We then answered three questions about ourselves: 1.) what we enjoy in our spare time, 2.) what are our strengths and weaknesses, and 3.) what is something that causes us stress. We reflected on these questions and how they relate to the 1D, 2D, or 3D state of mind. Most importantly, no one state of mind is enough, and all of them are necessary to master in order to learn and grow in your personal and professional life. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to meet fellow WIB members and discuss the salient points of Amita’s presentation. Amita’s experiences and advice are also in her book, “Enduring Edge: Transforming How We Think, Create and Change”.

WIB-Philadelphia presents “How to bring your Scientific Discovery to a Successful Commercial Product” with guest speaker, Dr. Michele Marcolongo

Learn more about how to take a discovery from the lab and translate it into a commercial reality. This can be done in several ways, but the two most common methods are either licensing existing intellectual property from the University to a major corporation that will then commercialize the technology; or starting a new company around the technology. Company owners and researchers can learn more about Dr. Michele Marcolongo’s roadmap to successful commercialization and key benefits through our interactive event on February 15, 2018.

• 1. What is your title and company you work for? I work for Cancer Genetics, Inc. (referred as CGI) headquartered in Rutherford, NJ. As the CGI VP of Biopharma Collaborations, I have a challenging role to bring CGI’s innovative specialized oncology testing solutions into pharmaceutical novel clinical trials, and help the patient community access the right medicines at the right time.

• 2. What's your favorite thing about your job? It is very fulfilling that our research and testing solutions can help bring life-changing tests and treatments to patients with debilitating diseases such as cancer. I see that through my profession in supporting novel drug development with pharma - patient’s voice is heard. Our goal to help patients and pharma partners is successfully achieved by implementing the right test for the right patient to get the right medicine at the right time.

• 3. What's your role in WIB-Philly? I am the Vice-Chair for WIB-Philly and also the co-founder for this chapter.

• 4. Why did you join WIB? Female biology is blessed with inherent qualities of compassion, sensitivity, and multi-tasking, and above all – with inner strength and passion to excel and make others inspired. With these qualities coupled with their hard work and perseverance, women can achieve anything they set their minds on. I want to see more women and young girls enter the field of healthcare/life sciences with passion and perseverance to excel as future entrepreneurs and community influencers. Being a female scientist by profession, I gladly accepted the exciting role as Vice-Chair of WIB-Philly.

• 5. Who would you most like to have dinner with (living or dead)? A very interesting question but a rare and a blessed opportunity. I would graciously prefer having dinner with many of the iconic personalities who died. I would like to meet Cleopatra from the Kingdom of Egypt. She was highly educated and spoke 6 languages. I want to be mentored by her for her valor and courage to foster women empowerment. I would also like to meet Sushrutha and Charaka from India who wrote the basic iconic books in medicine and surgery dated back to 1000 BC or earlier. It is inspiring and inquisitive that without today’s modern tools but a passionate and innovative mind they unveiled quite a bit about human body. Honestly, my list can go on forever in meeting living or dead personalities who changed the history in life sciences and empowered women.

WIB-Seattle Women's History Month Event: Be Your Own Advocate and Build Allies For Career Success Do you ever wonder how a co-worker was able to get a project or work assignment that seemed out of reach for them? Are you living the belief that if I work hard enough, they will notice me...and then nothing happens? Have you attended a meeting with your manager believing that they see your hard work and will reward you but instead walk away unhappy with the outcome? WIB-Seattle welcomes you to a unique workshop with Hien DeYoung, CHIC, ACC, SHRM-SCP, Executive Coach to CEOs and executive women. At this workshop we will explore self-advocacy and how it can get you and your work noticed and appreciated. Also allies...how to build those relationships that bolster your self-advocacy. It wouldn’t be a workshop without skill building, so bring your one challenge that will serve as your case study!

WIB-Seattle: "Dream, Girl" Documentary Screening and Discussion Event WIB-Seattle kicked off 2018 with a screening of the documentary “Dream, Girl” at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center on January 24th. In the film we heard from 10 women entrepreneurs who lead businesses across a broad range of industries including angel investing, independent book sales, energy production, fashion, industrial 3-D printing, and ice cream making. The women shared challenges they had to overcome such as sexual harassment, lack of paid maternity leave and preconceptions about women’s intellectual acumen and leadership abilities. Though each woman had a distinct journey, they all relied on a fierce determination to never give up the pursuit of their dreams, and most were surprised at how much they were able to achieve. Join us for the full discussion!

WIB-Southern California hosts YWIB workshop on how to network On December 3, 2017, the Southern California Young Women in Bio committee organized an insightful workshop for high school girls on how to network. Nucleus Biologics, a local biotech company focused on providing premium cell culture solutions, hosted the event at their headquarters. High school students from across San Diego and Orange County came to the workshop, and left with new perspective on what comes after a college degree. The workshop was divided into three sessions with three inspiring speakers covering a different professional topic. The audience was very engaged and eager to learn from these professionals, and asked very thought-provoking questions. Join us to learn more about this successful event!

WIB-Southern California Beach Yoga Social The Southern California WIB chapter invites you to join members, February 24, 2018, for a relaxed morning of beach yoga. Perfect for our new WIB members, those thinking about joining, or anyone looking to meet fellow professionals in the SoCal Biotech community. Leading our session will be Randy Engler. Randy took up the study of yoga when inclination and circumstances met to foster curiosity and exploration into these practices. Trained in Hatha yoga (RYT 200) in the styles of Iyengar and Vinyasa, Randy stresses individual expression and safety in his own practice and in the classes he guides. Light refreshments will be provided. This is a FREE event - just show up with your mat and enjoy! WIB Rare Disease Part 4: Consumer Information Integrity: Does it make sense or is it info over-load? To achieve the goals of precision medicine and go from data to relevant clinical translation, substantial progress needs to be made in areas of data and knowledge integration, analysis, discovery, and interpretation. Further, and with emphasis on genomics, we need data on a greater scale (more!) and scope (greater ethnic and racial diversity) to glean the insights that will allow us to achieve gains on an individual level. The genomics landscape is changing fast from individual to population-scale genomics engagement opportunities. Companies such as 23andMe, Ancestry, and Helix are empowering consumers to engage with their DNA to actively manage their healthcare. During this event, February 28, 2018, we will discuss the myriad market players seeking individual’s genetic data; share questions and tools for intelligently navigating this landscape, and examine the crucial role of citizens as partners in research. WIB-Southern California: Entrepreneur Boot Camp On January 30th, 2018, the Southern California chapter of Women in Bio (WIB) partnered with Johnson & Johnson Innovation and JLAB San Diego to organize a very interesting entrepreneur boot camp. The event was sponsored by Johnson & Johnson Innovation and JLAB San Diego and was held at their beautiful facility in the Torrey Pines area. After a short introduction about Johnson & Johnson Innovation and JLAB San Diego by Brittney Sabbah, Alyssa Master described WIB’s mission. George Kenney led the entrepreneur boot camp and gave a very engaging presentation on how he started as a venture capitalist and what it takes to raise money for a new venture. In 2005, the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA) established the Donald A. King Summer Research Fellowship program in honor of Donald King who passed away in 2004. Don was a tireless advocate for Huntington’s disease (HD) families and served as HDSA’s Chairman of the Board from 1999 to 2003. The purpose of this fellowship program is two-fold: first, to attract the brightest young scientists into the field of Huntington’s disease research; and secondly, to facilitate meaningful HD research to clarify the biological mechanisms underlying HD pathology. The Fellowship sponsors college students to pursue an HD research project during the summer months. Fellowship recipients, working under the supervision of senior HD scientists, will undertake a project that is focused and achievable in a short timeframe, yet helpful in guiding future HD research. Applications are accepted between December and March each year. The deadline for 2018 fellowship applications is March 2, 2018, 5:00 p.m. (EDT). Please submit proposals via email as a MS Word or PDF file. Learn more.
