Howard County Commission for Women  Proposal: Women Helping Women Overview The Howard County Commission for Women (“CFW” ), par tne ring wit h the Nor th Laurel ulti ser!i "e Cente r, proposes holding a si# month long empowerme nt, netwo r$ing, and "areer s$ills  %uilding program "entered around monthly dinner meetings en"ouraging learning and networ$ing with allies and ea"h other & The goal of the program is to en"ourage and empower women %y helping them  %uild networ$s, %uild s$ills, and learn a%out resour"es in the "ommunity to help mo!e their li!es forward& The program is %ui lt on an empowerment, rather than ser!i"e, model ' the program will help women help themsel!es mo!e forward %ased on their "hoi"es, rathe r than pro!id e spe"ifi" ser!i"es to women in need& lti matel y , the goal of the program is to help the parti"i pants in the progr am unlo"$ their own power to su""eed&  Pilot Pr ogram n ay *+-, CFW ran two pilot sessions of “Women Helping Women” at the North Laurel ulti ser!i "e Center & The sessions wer e well attended, and the ma.orit y of parti "ipant s from the firs t ses sio n "ame to the se"ond, and some %rought addit ional par ti" ipa nts & The o!era ll res ponse was in"redi%ly positi!e, and e!ery parti"ipant who too$ the sur!ey stated that they wished to attend more meetings& The pilot progr am also illustr ated how the parti"ipan ts "ould support ea"h other & /uring the  program, one parti"ipant offered a %usiness networ$ing "onne"tion to another & Women who were no longer in "risis ser!ed as support and role models for women in a"ti!e "risis & 0 num%er of par ti"ipants rea"hed out to "ommunity resour"es as a result of the program, in"luding one woman who was a%le to o%tain legal ser!i"es to e#punge a matter on her "riminal re"ord that pre!ented employment, resulting in her a%ility to find employment& /uri ng the pilot progra m, CFW pro!i ded dinner to parti "ipants , and also pro!id ed %a%ysi tting ser!i"es for "hildren& n a de%rief session, /ire"tor 0s$ew suggested pla"ing additional e#pe"tations on parti"ipants, and "reati ng a progr am that ended in a “gradu ation” and "ele%r ation of a""omplishments& /ire" tor 0s$ew noted that the feed%a"$ he re"ei!ed from the parti"ipants and so"ial wor$ers was e#tremely  positi!e& He further stated that so"ial wor$ers had %een see$ing empowerment and networ$ing  programs for their "lients, and that this need in the "ommunity was not met& /ire"tor 0s$ew noted that simpl e so"ial inter a"tion %etween parti"ipa nts and allies was in"re di%ly %enefi"i al for parti"i pants, as role models and also to illustrate that there was a more di!erse group of women in the County, and that those women were part of their "ommunity as well& /ire"tor 0s$ew stated that he thought it would %e in"redi%ly %enefi"ial to the parti"ipants ' and potentially to the CFW as well ' if, after finishing the  program, parti"ipants %e"ame part of the CFW1s o !erall "o nta"t list& For e#ample, he stated that the y might %e in!ited to the Women1s Hall of Fame, to %e inspired %y the honorees %ut also to open the e!ent and ad!ertise the e!ent to a new "ommunity of women in Howard County&

;essions will start with introdu"tions, introdu"tion of the spea$er %y the fa"ilitator& The spea$erwill then %riefly introdu"e the topi", and the fa"ilitator and spea$er will pro!ide guidan"e for adis"ussion& The sessions will %e highly parti"ipatory& 0t the end of ea"h session, the parti"ipants willre"ord ta$e aways and o%tain information sheets for program %inders&

0fter the 2th session, a "ele%ration will %e held& /ire"tor 0s$ew will pro!ide spa"e, and willen"ourage partners at the North Laurel ultiser!i"e Center, "ommunity partners, parti"ipants, families,and allies to attend&

 Participants

The parti"ipants in this program will in"lude 4>* women "hosen %y the North Laurelultiser!i"e Center who ha!e re"ently wor$ed with so"ial wor$ers at the Center& The parti"ipants will %e identified %y so"ial wor$ers using "riteria de!eloped %y @uinton 0s$ew, /ire"tor of the NorthLaurel ultiser!i"e Center& n addition, up to two Commissioners and8or CFW "ommittee mem%erswill attend ea"h meeting as allies parti"ipating in the dis"ussion, as well as to pro!ide administrati!e

assistan"e at the meeting& 0nother mem%er of the Commission, CFW "ommittee, and8or anotherindi!idual "hosen %y the Committee Chair will ser!e as a fa"ilitator for ea"h session& Finally, a presenter may attend ea"h session& Funding
