Before we enter in to the subject of how to make a great first impressions let’s know

What is a first impression?

It’s the first feelings and thoughts a person has towards you when he sees you or listens to you for the first time. The first impression is made during the first few minutes, and it’s influenced by the way you look, act, dress, and talk.

Why is a good first impression important?

If you go to school, your peer’s first impression of you will determine whether you make new friends or not. If you are a salesperson, a customer’s first impression of you will influence whether he buys your product or not. If you go to a job interview, the first impression the interviewer has of you will influence his final hiring decision.

Now how do you make a good impression?

There is one way which always works. You might need a little practice, but if you follow this suggestion, you will make excellent first impressions

First of all, smile. Give the person you are meeting a big smile. Everybody loves a

person who is happy to see them. Cheerfully greet the person with a loud, hearty “Hi” or “Hello” and give them a firm handshake.Try to say the other person’s name at least once in the conversation.

Act the way you would act if you were meeting a good friend who had been away for a long time. Be enthusiastic.

Always make eye contact, it makes a person feel special. If you are meeting a group of people, make sure to make eye contact with all of them. Stand or sit up straight and do not cross your arms. Body language is very important.Show people that you are happy to meet them, and they will feel happy to meet you.Practice this technique until it becomes second nature. Practice in front of a mirror, practice with a family member or a friend. Practice!

It might feel awkward at first, but in a short time you will find it easier and easier to start and keep conversations with people you would not have dared to approach in the past, and you will be making great first impressions.

Being a key animal in the history of farming, sheep have a deeply entrenched place in human culture, and find representation in much modern language and symbology. As livestock, sheep are most-often associated with pastoral, Arcadian imagery. Sheep figure in many mythologies such as the Golden Fleece and major religions, especially the Abrahamic traditions. In both ancient and

modern religious ritual, sheep are used as sacrificial animals.

For the first few years of life it is possible to calculate the age of sheep from their front teeth, as a pair of milk teeth is replaced by larger adult teeth each year, the full set of eight adult front teeth being complete at about four years of age. The front teeth are then gradually lost as sheep age, making it harder for them to feed and hindering the health and productivity of the animal. For this reason, domestic sheep on normal pasture begin to slowly decline from four years on, and the average life expectancy of a sheep is 10 to 12 years, though some sheep may live as long as 20 years.

mikio naruse: an unsung Japanese director

Three prominent films directors from the land of the rising sun – Akira Kurosawa, Kenji

Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu – are known and admired all over the world. The name of another very talented director is usually ignored – he is Mikio Naruse (1905-1969). Naruse’s films are usually hard to get by outside his native country until recently when some of his extant films have been released through DVD and VHS. Strangely enough, he made a total of eighty nine films in his entire career.

Perhaps one of the reasons for Naruse’s relative obscurity is the director himself. He was extremely reticent, preferred to shun the limelight and maintained a low profile. He was also a ‘producer’s director’. He did not shy away from the mundane films that the studios told him to make. Nevertheless, Naruse made some very unusual films in his prolific career. He was also no stranger to the works of the Japanese masters like Kurosawa and Ozu. In fact,Ozu served as his apprentice for some time at the Shochiku film company, and Kurosawa was

his assistant for a brief period during the 1930s. Catherine Russell, the film scholar, credits Naruse with ushering in “Japanese modernity” to the Nipponese film industry. Even in the 1950s and 1950s in the traditional Japanese bastion of patriarchy he made ‘women’s films’ – films which highlighted the social problems faced by women in the post-war Japan as well as their aspirations. One good example of such a film is Meshi (Repast,1951). In this film the famous actress Setsuko Hara plays Michiyo, a housewife from Osaka trapped in a monotonous marriage for

five years. All she does is domestic chores like cooking or washing for her working husband who spares very little time for her. The couple is also plagued by financial difficulties. Michiyo, driven to desperation by her husband’s flirtatious niece Satoko, leaves for her mother’s house. Over a period of months, as Michiyo considers divorce, the couple’s relationship is tested. Women’s issues are also the central themes of Naruse’s many other films, such as Okasaan (Mother,1952), Bangiku (Late Chrysanthemums,1952) and Onna ga kaidan wo agaru toki (When a Woman Ascends the Stairs, 1960). I shall discuss When a Woman Ascends the Stairs here in some detail to have an idea of Naruse’s thematic concerns and stylistic aspects. The film, a moving piece of humanist drama, has recently generated public interest.When a Woman Ascends the Stairs is a film about a 30-year-old bar hostess called Keiko Yashiro (played by Hideko Takamine) of the Ginza district. Keiko struggles to make a decent living in the overtly patriarchal society where being a bar hostess is traditionally looked down upon. She is otherwise known as ‘Mama’. The bar in which she works is located at the top of a flight of stairs. Keiko hates the moment when she climbs the stairs. This act of ‘ascending’ perhaps symbolizes the daily struggle in a profession she had to adopt as a compulsion. But this act is fraught with ironic significance as it does not necessarily suggest an upward movement in the social status. She is, however, a bar hostess with a difference. She is welcoming and courteous, but she never compromises with her virtue. The young manager Kenichi (played by the talented Tatsuya Nakadai) worships her from distance, as he knows that the widow Keiko has vowed not to love any man after the death of her husband. Keiko has a far from perfect family life – she has to financially support her mother

and brother who do not hesitate to exploit her; at the same time she has to maintain a façade of glamour for the sake of her profession. She is torn between her family and job. Hideko Takamine plays her part with great panache – her subtle glances and apparent smiles hide a great inner torment. The audience has no choice but to empathize with her situation. Naruse portrays the

struggle of a modern woman in a society that compartmentalizes women as playthings for men. A bar hostess’s job is to provide men with “a good time”, Keiko is stuck between two choices: either to open her own bar or to marry a rich patron in exchange for security. Either way she is at the mercy of men. Her dilemma gets worse as she realises that she is not going to be young and beautiful for long. Her desperation is portrayed subtly by Hideko. At last she gives in to the romantic advances of a rich factory owner, only to learn that he is but a poor and married womanizer. At this vulnerable emotional stageshe breaks down and drunkenly confesses her suppressed love for a well off bank manager who fails to summon courage to leave his wife for ‘Mama’ which at the same time suggests his hypocrisy. Keiko momentarily suffers from an emotional collapse. But Naruse refuses to let his character

succumb to fate. Instead he lets her fight back to ‘normalcy’. She knows she cannot overstep the boundaries set forth by society so she continues to live, continues to ascend the stairs of her bar with a painted smile on her face. When a Woman Ascends the Stairs is a landmark film. Instead of Mizoguchi’s traditional settings, Naruse portrays the contemporary society. It is a ‘modern’ society that even now assigns a subservient role to women. Perhaps the Western apathy to his films may have stemmed from the fact that they were not exotic enough. In his works we get an exquisite combination of the East and the West. Catherine Russell in her book Cinema of Naruse Mikio: Women and Japanese Modernity (Durham: Duke university Press, 2008), which incidentally is the only book length study exclusively on him, observes: “Naruse produced a cinema that bears traces of the foreign including American-style individualism and female agency and traces of the Japanese in the form of architecture, costume, gesture, language, and so on” (p. xvii). His direction was well-balanced and practical. It imitated life to perfection. The characters in his films almost always have to bow to social norms, but they never sacrifice their dignity. In When a Woman Ascends the Stairs the character Yuri (a novice female bar owner) commits suicide to maintain her dignity, while Keiko shows a more positive approach to life. Even after her plan of leading a normal life is shattered, she continues to fight. Naruse’s narrative is simple and his editing sticks to the well known techniques of film editing but his films almost always carry a deeper anguish. It is no wonder that Akira Kurosawa describes his film making as “. a deep river with a quiet surface disguising a fast-raging current underneath.”

The Sumatran tiger has the most stripes of all the tiger subspecies, and the Siberian tiger has the fewest stripes. Tiger stripes are like human fingerprints; no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes.

CUBS Tiger cubs are born blind and weigh only about 2 to 3 pounds (1 kg), depending on the subspecies. They live on milk for 6-8 weeks before the female begins taking them to kills to feed. Tigers have fully developed canines by 16 months of age, but they do not begin making their own kills until about 18 months of age.

OuR Hindu tradition gives a lot of weightage to the role of the nine planets in our lives. Surya, Chandra, Mangala

(Mars), Budha, Guru, Shukra (Venus), Rahu and Kethu are all supposed to be having a grip on our destiny. So much so they are believed to be the commanders in chief of the Supreme Gods, doing their duties in governing our horoscopes according to our karma. Hence the need to worship them and

build temples for them became part and parcel of our culture. Around Kumbakonam nine temples dedicated to the nine planets have been built around the Temple town of Kumbakonam in the South. And the sun God or Surya being the centre of the planetary system has a vital role to play in moulding our personality and the pattern of our life style. The temple for Surya, Suryanaar Koil is about 16 kms from Kumbakonam on the Mylaaduthurai road. Driving through

lush green trees even in summer, we reach the beautiful temple, always crowded more on Sundays (the day of the week, dedicated to the Sun God)The LegendA Rishi by name Kalava, foresaw his future and realized that he was to be infected with leoprasy. He prayed to the Navagrahas to be cured from this terrible disease. The benevolent nine planets were pleased with his thapas and relieved him of the ailment . But Lord Bramha was angry with them for rewriting the destiny of the Rishi and cursed them to bear the same disease. so it was that the Navagrahas now infected with the gory skin disease apologized to Bramha and pleaded for shaa pa vimochanam. Bramha then directed them to worship Lord Shiva and Maathaa Parvathy enshrined in the temple of Thirumangalakkudi (1 km away) as Prana naadeshwarar and Mangalaamba, take a dip in the holy Cauvery nearby and do penance. The nine planets did every thing the Creator had ordered and were cured of the deadly disease. They went back to their heavenly abode and the place where they did thapas came to be known as Suryanaar Koil. They were also enshrined in the temple here, in separate sannadhis. Legend goes to say that anybody whose horoscope reveals these Navagrahas especially Surya, in less advantageous positions, has only to come and worship these planets here and is sure to be relieved of the great pains and problems caused by ‘Graha chaaram’ (the movement of the Grahaas )Temple Architecture Though not as big as many of the other Navagraha temples, this

ancient temple with the cutely carved Gopuram as we see it today, is said to be built by Kuloththunga chola. King krishnadevaraaya also has a hand in the kainkarya in the form of some endowment. Different from other temples in style and settings, this Shrine has the main sanctum sanctorum dedicated to Suryanaaraayana Murthy flanked by his Consorts usha and Prathusha in thirukkalyaana sevai. The powerful planet Guru (Jupitar) stands in reverence with folded hands, right in front of Lord Surya, casting His Karuna Kataaksha. As the Tamizh saying goes, ‘Guru paarthaal kodi Nanmai’ and this applies even to Lord Surya, who wields the central and the most dominant position in the Solar system.The entrance and the steps leading to this elevated Garbhagraham are on one side. The protocol here is that one has to first get a dharshan of Lord Surya and Guru, go down in an anticlockwise direction (apprathakshinam), very unusual in a Tamizhnadu temple, visit the sanctum sanctorum of Sanneswarar, followed by the six other planets and end up at the sannadhi of Sandikeshwarar, who is supposed to be a supreme Shiva bhaktha. The most orthodox method for a devotee who wants to do a parihaara, would be to purchase a plate of nine coconuts with beetal leaves, arica, yellow bananas and camphor, sold in the temple complex. Red being the colour for the sun, red hibiscus flowers and a piece of red cloth are also to be taken. The chief priest clad in a yellow shiny dhothi guides you and recites the special sthala Gayathri manthra of each planet along with the devottee’s name and birth star, thus appealing to the Navagrahas to mitigate the thoshas and thus appeasing them in showering their Grace. The Navagrahas are seen here without any weapon in their hands as shantha swaroopis and hence in a mood to nullify the negative effects of the planetary positions of the Bhakthas’ horoscope. There is also a sannadhi for Kol theertha Vinayakar, kasi Visvanathar and

visalakshi. One can perform an easier parihara by lighting up 10 earthern lamps (with sesame oil or ghee), one for each graham and one for the Ganesha . The sun stands for tremendous energy, health, power, vigour, supremacy and a divine pilgrimage to this Suryanar koil, topping the list of the nine temples dedicated to the Navagrahas, is bound to eradicate all problems, physical and mental.

As is said by sage Agasthya in his incomparable manthra ‘Adhithya Hrudhayam lets also pray thus ‘Bhano Bhaaskara Maarthaanda, chanda rashmi, Dhiwaakara Ayush, aarogya, aishwaryam, puthraan cha dehi me sadhaa’

Well the memory was so fresh in my mind about the moments spent with him, when I saw the news about the bomb blast, I called his home right away the arderly informed me that “HE IS NO MORE.”, I was bewildered, because ten days before his death, he mentioned that his hand are itching and he wanted to shoot all the terrorist, he was filled with Grit, vigour and determination to destroy all the terroist in our country. Ashok Kamate was a Straight forward man, according to him “Black is black and white is white” and we shared some special moments with him and I conveyed my deep condolences to his family during those grieving moments of his death.6.Recently you gave a speech on “Saving lives” – How is the current “Chennai Traffic Police” helping the chennaities to minimize accidents?“Every Life is important”, The head of the family is normally the bread winner of the family so when you save one life, eventually we land up saving many lives in the family, the revenue of the family is not stopped.So Chennai Traffic Police takes care of so many lives in Chennai by avoiding many accidents.7. “Saving our Sparrow” project conducted by Bohra Community, What is the Project all about? What are its goals?Bohra Community recently held a function on their libarisation of their group As a art of colliagation, they conducted this function on “Saving Sparrow”, To bring awareness and to enlighten the thought of “saving sparrow”.8.Were you in “Special Task Police”, Was it difficult to encounter “Veerappan”? What is the special training did you go through?

When I was a SP in Dharmapuri, I was involved in Two or Three operations of Karnataka & Tamilnadu encountering “Veerappan”, Well it involved a lot of multi-tasking and it was quite challenging too. In Dharmapuri, there was a lot of poverty, hence illegal liquour was very common and I had to abolish the trend of illegal Liquor completely.9. What are the innovative steps and action plans you are going to take to improve the department which you are in? We have taken many innovative steps, for instance at Kannagi Nagar located at OMR road – the slum people were shifted and we devised many plans to reform Them completely. Method

Wash and boil minced meat and potatoes separaately. Peel and mash the potatoes to smooth batter. Add the pepper powder and salt to taste, mix well and keep aside. Fry the chopped onions with sufficient oil, chilli powder, turmeric powder, garam masala powder till brown. Add the boiled minced muttonand fry till the mix is dry.Remove from fire. Make small balls of the mashed potato,and fill them with the mutton mix preparation in the centre and keep aside. Place the tawa on fire, pour oil requied for deep fry and heat. Now dip the mutton balls in beaten egg, roll in rusk powder and deep fry till brown.Serve hot with chappathi.
