This is stated in page 1. “We explore media representations of wilderness recreation as a possible agent in the gender socialization process that dissuades women from participation.” Headings and subheadings are used in this paper They are helpful to find information in the paper The research question is, “What are appropriate places and activities for men and women?” This is how articles are selected for the study, “We suggest that activity-based magazines—magazines whose primary subject matter is wilderness recreation activities—may be a particularly influential source of information.” Page 3 Theoretical research is used The studies are qualitative in nature Research findings: 1) women have low levels of engagement with the wilderness and wilderness recreation activities; 2) women are followers who need guidance; 3) women’s engagement with these activities are meant to either be an escape from the home or a way to mimic the home in the outdoors; and 4) women who are highly engaged in wilderness recreation activities are unique and require feminization. Limitations are mentioned throughout the paper. There are things in the articles that the researcher cannot control.
