Suggested answer:Without a doubt Marian and CountFosco are the most interestingcharacters in the book. First, of all, they are both very unusual. Marian hasan unattractive face but she is veryintelligent, loving and courageous. Sheis the one who keeps Count Fosco fromdoing everything he plans. She is CountFosco’s perfect adversary. And that issaying a lot because Count Fosco is abig character in many different ways.First, physically he is enormous. He isobviously evil, but he is also verycharming. Marian says he has a facelike the great general NapoleonBonaparte. He is also very intelligent. He is the character that ‘creates’ thestory. The strange idea of eliminatingLaura by changing her into Anne washis. Finally, Fosco becomes even more

interesting when he, just like thereader, admires Marian very much. Wemay like Walter and Laura but they aretoo much like standard heroes.

Suggested answer:The ideal woman of Victorian Englandwas physically attractive, and often

had a light complexion and hair. Shedid not have a strong character inmany situations. However, if therewas a question of morality she couldbe quite strong. This comes out in TheWoman in White when Laura, atypical Victorian heroine, refuses tosign a document for her husbandbecause she does not think it is right:she must read it first. Also, theVictorian woman became heroic andstrong when she sacrificed herself. InThe Woman in White Laura marries aman who is obviously bad becauseshe wants to respect her father’sdying wish. With regard to the manshe loves, she is very dependent. Shetotally accepts his opinions (unless,of course, she believes they aremorally wrong), and she waits forhim to save her in any difficult ordangerous situations.
