It’s been an exciting year at Wolf Ridge!

Kim Skyelander, who directed Wolf Ridge for the previous seven years, said goodbye in early June. Under her leadership, Wolf Ridge moved into a strong financial position as the Center became debt-free and many capital improvements were completed. New programs were developed, enrollment remained strong, and new curriculum was introduced. We thank her for all she has done for Wolf Ridge and for her dedication and leadership.

Having worked at Wolf Ridge for over 20 years starting as a student naturalist in 1987 and becoming Assistant Director in 2001, I was named Executive Director and President of Wolf Ridge in June. I am tremendously excited to step into this new role. Wolf Ridge is in a strong position to move its mission forward and continue to be a leader in environmental education.

Wolf Ridge turned 40 this year! Our school program remains strong and we are now educating second generations in families. The SEAK Program, a yearlong environmental science program for low-income high school students, has met with great success as we start its third year. Environmentally sound improvements are being made on the campus, including a new biomass heating system, upgraded septic system, and new LED lighting for the entire campus.

Please join us at Wolf Ridge for a day, a week, or in support of learning experiences for children and families in the outdoors. And thank you for all your support. We could not do this without you!

From the PresidentWelcome to the 2011 Annual Report for

Wolf Ridge Environmental

Learning Center!

Wolf Ridge’s mission is to develop a citizenry that has the knowledge, skills, motivation and commitment

to act together for a quality environment.

Changing How Students Learn ScienceWhile jobs requiring training in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are potentially increasing four times faster than overall job growth, American students and especially disadvantaged students are not gaining the necessary proficiency to keep up with their international peers. Wolf Ridge’s Environmental Science Immersion Program (also known as SEAK) is designed to change how students learn science and to ensure that disadvantaged youth have the opportunity to participate in a great yearlong science program.

Forty students from Patrick Henry High School in North Minneapolis, Roosevelt High School in the Powderhorn neighborhood of Minneapolis, and Duluth Denfeld are participating in the third year of this after-school and summer science program. Over the course of a year, students get outside and do hands-on field work, help develop and lead projects with younger students, meet with and get inspired by guest lecturers that are experts in their fields, experience real-world dilemmas in environmental science, and work in the field for extended periods of time. This hands-on experiential program engages students in new ways that has greatly increased interest and proficiency in science, and students earn a full year of elective academic science credit upon completion of their three weeks at Wolf Ridge in the summer.

Our thanks to The Medtronic Foundation, The Boston Scientific Foundation, The Steven C. Leuthold Family Foundation, The Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, The Leroy Kopp Family Foundation, The Beim Foundation, The Lone Wolf Fund of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, and the U.S. Forest Service for their help in funding this program!

Accomplishments 2011

“Through this program, you gain a lot more than just knowledge in science, research and environmental

education, you learn about yourself, build self confidence and make lifelong friends.”

~High School Ecology Credit Camp Participant

Forty Years of Learning: 1971-2011In September of 1971, Jack Pichotta opened the doors of the Environmental Learning Center in Isabella, MN. In the late 70’s the search began for a permanent home. Years of searching for a site and persistent fundraising culminated in opening the current campus in September of 1988. Twenty-seven schools attended in 1971 and over half of those schools are still attending. The total attendance is now over 180 schools annually. In addition, a very successful set of college, youth, family and adult programs round out the year. Wolf Ridge has become a leader in environmental education both in Minnesota and the entire country.

School ProgramOur school program, from early September to June, is the largest and most attended program of all Wolf Ridge programs. Last year over 12,000 participants attended from over 100 communities in three states. As the Center heads into its 40th year it is now routine that parent chaperones participate in Wolf Ridge classes that they attended as an elementary or middle school student perhaps 30 years ago.

Summer ProgramsThe 2011 summer programs saw record enrollment. In addition to the standard weeklong programs many students now enroll in multi-week programs some of which provide a year of high school science credit. Wilderness trips in 2011 brought youth and families to the Apostle Islands by sea kayak, backpacking across Isle Royale, through the Boundary Waters by canoe, and of course hiking right out our back door on the Superior Hiking Trail.

“In 6th grade, I had a school trip to a place in northern Minnesota called Wolf Ridge. This was

the first time I had been away from my family for an extended period. Wolf Ridge was a week-long nature retreat designed to teach kids to be more independent along with teaching them the

environmental impacts of their daily activities and how they can improve their daily routines. This trip was one of my favorite memories of going through school and it helped me become more

confident in what I wanted to do in life and it made me much more independent.”

Quality Equipment for Outstanding LearningStudents’ learning is supported with high quality equipment throughout all of Wolf Ridge’s programming. With the philanthropic support of many, but particularly the Donald Weesner Foundation in recent years, students are well equipped with skis, snowshoes, raincoats, boots, bug nets, binoculars, canoes, GPS’s, tents, climbing harness and helmets, pH meters, compasses and much more. The support of donors and foundations ensures worn out equipment is replaced and students have outstanding and joyful learning experiences!

Biomass Renewable EnergyBig orange pellet burners are humming along in the Energy Center as they pump out millions of Btu’s to 85,000 square feet of buildings on the Wolf Ridge campus. Wolf Ridge continued our long history of commitment to renewable energy by upgrading our previous cordwood system to wood pellet gasification with computer controlled combustion. A cooperative effort of five residential environmental education centers resulted in a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy that includes this project. While the simple task of cutting a tree into pieces and throwing them onto a fire creates heat, the processing of wood fiber into pellets provides a more dense and higher Btu/pound output. Whether to heat the water in a student’s shower or spaces in which they sleep, participants at Wolf Ridge know their heat is from biomass sources that are renewable in their own lifetime and are from nearby sources.
