Landlords and private persons have the possibility to advertise their properties on our website for free. We list rooms, flats and houses in Zurich and its surroundings – furnished and unfurnished, from short term lets to open-ended lets.

The wohnbulletin, our brochure on living in Zurich, is meant to assist you with finding accommodation in Zurich. We appreciate any feedback and suggestions on the brochure.

Our website provides you with further information as well as with an overview of the rooms and flats we are currently offering. The detailed advertisements are only available for users who have registered on our website and identified themselves as members of UZH or ETH.

2. Useful information on and about accommodationA brief description about general and specific information on flat hunting. We are happy to assist you personally in our Infocenter Wohnen.

2.1 General informationThe Federal Housing Office offers a leaflet on living in Switzerland. It is available for download in several languages via the following link:http://www.bwo.admin.ch/ dokumentation/00106/00112/00121/index.html?lang=de. Furthermore, the city and canton of Zurich both have a broad range of information on living in Zurich and Switzerland on their homepages: www.zuerich.ch and www.stadt-zuerich.ch.

Detailed information on finding accommodation in Zurich can be found at http://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/sd/de/index/erschliessung/tab1/wegweiser/wohnen.html.You have to fulfil certain conditions in order to rent a flat or property owned by the city of Zurich, or any publicly owned apartment. The appropriate administration will be able to tell you these conditions.

2.2 Instructions for finding a room/flatAllow enough time to find accommodation. Zurich is very pleasant to live in. However, it is also a rather expensive city where cheap accommodation for students is hard to come by. Therefore, you should make sure to use various platforms and look in different neighbourhoods. Zurich has an excellent public transport system which makes it possible for you to reach most towns outside the city in less than 30 minutes. Many letting agencies offer a search service where you can personalise your search according to your criteria. After registering you will receive email alerts when a property meets your requirements.Please note that the search will be more successful when you are on site and can spend time to view the room/flat in question. The search for accommodation in Zurich can quickly become a full-time job, so make sure to have the following documents ready if the chance to view a room or flat will arise:

• Copy of the certificate of registration (Swiss citizens only) • Copy of immigration papers (foreigners only) • Copy of the debts collection report (obtained from your local Debt Enforcement

Office) or an equivalent proof of assets (e.g. a positive credit report from the Gen-eral Credit Protection Agency (“SCHUFA”) or a guarantee from your parents)

If available: • Copy of your last tax calculation • Copy of your pay slips, statements for unemployment compensation, old-age and

survivors’ insurance– OASI (“AHV”), disability insurance – DI (“IV”) or a written rental guarantee

You can enclose a letter of application to introduce yourself (personal data), state the reason why you are looking for an accommodation and specify your wishes (size of the flat and maximum rent). If possible you should add a reference (your study advisor at your home university or your former landlord).

Take your time while viewing a flat and do not hesitate to ask questions if there is something you do not understand. You can hand over the person responsible your application right then and there, unless it was said explicitly that the application must be submitted online. Remember that making a good first impression might be a positive influence on their decision.

2.3 Legal Aid• If you need legal assistance please contact the office for legal advice of the

University of Zurich and ETH Zurich (“Rebeko”): www.uzh.ch/rebeko/• The “Anwaltskollektiv” (www.anwaltskollektiv.ch) offers legal information without an

appointment. As a rule, a consultation lasts 30 minutes and costs CHF 60. They also help you find a lawyer in case you need further assistance.

• The Zurich Bar Association (www.zav.ch) offers a free service to help you find a suitable lawyer.

• On the website of the “Mieterverband” (www.mieterverband.ch) you find information concerning tenancy law. You can also download several information sheets on living and renting. Furthermore, you can make a personal appointment from the amount of CHF 65 onwards.

2.4 Good to know …• If you rent a furnished room for at least one month you may terminate the lease

by giving two weeks’ notice, unless otherwise agreed in the tenancy contract. Furnished rooms are rooms within a household, potentially with use of kitchen and bath. Rooms in a flat share are not counted as furnished rooms and have a three months’ notice.

• Unfurnished rooms and flats also have three months’ notice. • Rooms in student halls must often be rented for the whole semester and the ten-

ancy cannot be terminated early.• It is possible to sublet a room. However, you have to notify your landlord and get

his permission first.
