Of eourse, hen we come to prophecy, we ve two things  that are very osely associated: the ministry the prophet, and the gift of ophecy.  Many times folk  as ciate the two; and  while they e associated, they are not the ame. Just because one pr o hesies doe s not make him a ophet. e Word of God plainly teaches that all are to seek and desire prophesy. If prophesying ade you a prophet, then it is aying that everyone ought to ant to be a prophet; yet Paul ainly made known to the Cor thians that all are not pr o hets. He said, "Are all apost s? are all prophets?" The nswer is no, of course. So veryone couldn't be prophets, ut all can prophesy. peaking with tongues is a upernatural utterance in an nknown tongue. That is, it is nknown to the speaker, yet it ay not be unknown to every ody.  If you are witnessing to omeone and you become an nted by the Spirit to witness, u  say things you never thought  That is really a minor peration of the gift of prophecy. ou were inspired beyond your elf. The Spirit inspired you to ay those things. Sometimes  prophecy can be used in prayer. Sometimes when praying, in your own language as  well as in tongues, you be come inspired to pray. I've been praying in English, and have be come so inspired to pray in English with the anointing of God's Spirit moving upon me, until I just listened to myself fo r an hour there on my knees. I knew it was coming out of me, but my mind didn't have a thing in the world to do with it. That was prophecy; it was inspired utterance. All inspired utterance is prophecy. Sometimes when you are pro phesying it will seem as if there are two of you. Have you ever been there? Well, there are two of  you in a way - there's the outward man and the inward man. This prayer is coming out of the inward man, and with the outward man we can listen. Sometimes when I am preaching this anointing comes upon me, and I'll hear myself say things I haven't thought of, It will seem as if I' m standing right beside myself  listening. Actually this is coming out of the inward man, and I'm listen ing with this outward man - this body, my natural mind and my natural ears. While preaching I've heard myself  say things, and suddenly I thought with my mind, "Well, I'm going to listen to that; I'm going to get that. I don't know that myself." That also happens sometimes when I' m praying. Your mind doesn't have anything to do with it; it comes out of your spirit because of the  Holy Spirit within you. That is a lower degree of the operation of prophecy.  Then these prophetic utterances take on the ecstatic form that we.hear in our midst sometimes. As ministers, we study and pre pare sermons. The Word of God teaches us to study. Paul said, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed." In teaching I follow an outline and study more closely than I do otherwise; but then in preaching the anointing of God's Spirit comes. Things begin to come to us, and we say things that we've never thought of. It startles me sometimes. Well, that is still a manifestation of pr o phesy, a manifestation of in spired utterance. It is certainly 'supernatural. It is inspired ut terance, and all  utterance in spired by the Spirit of God is really prophecy. Even tongues with interpreta tion is prophecy in its varied form. Tongues with interpre tation equals prophecy. Paul said, "Greater is he that pro- phesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he inter pret." He is saying if you speak with tongues and interpret, that is equivelent to prophecy. ari ly  praying with tongues and

inte rpreti ng in your own  l ife.

Prophecy  is more in use  than

folk   have thought. Many times

they  think   of   just  one  part  of it,

when actually  that  is only one

manifestation.  Just  because you

pro phe sy doesn't make you a

proph et. Fo r a man to be a p r o

phet, he  stands  in  that  office

and  uses  that  ministry.

T h e r e  are other things  that  go

along to make it the ministry

of   a prophet. The simp le  gift

of   p rophecy in the Ne w Te st a

ment i s speaki ng  unto  men to

edification,  and exhort ation, and

comfort ,  and it should on ly be

used in  that  a rea .  You can see

readily,  in the simple  gift  of

prophecy t here is no fore tell ing .

However ,  you  wi l l  find in the

mini stry of the prophet t here i s

foretell ing  and predictio n be

cause  he has so me of the  r e v e

lation gifts oper atin g -  word  of

wisdom,  word  of knowl edge,

and/or discern ing of spi rit s.

Another  thing we need to rea

l ize  is  that  spiritual things can

be misused, as  we l l  as  natural

things. Some people say, "How

can  that  be if God is doing it?"

We l l ,  it i s m en doing it by the

inspir ation of the Spir it of God .

Anything  that  man has anyth ing

to do with  isn 't  perfect.

The  Spirit of God is pe rfe ct,

and the gifts of the Spirit in

the msel ves are per fec t, but they

cert ain ly are not alway s per fec t

in manifestation because they

are manifested through an i m

perfect  v es se l. That is the re ason why pr ophe cies and tongues

with  interp retati on need to be

 judged.

Le t ' s  look   in the  scr iptures  at

some things.  Ac t s  13:1 says,

"Now  there we re in the  church

that  was at Antioch certain

prophet s and tea che rs; as Ba r

nabas,  and Simeon  that  was

ca l led  N ig e r ,  and Lu cius of

Cyrene ,  and Manaen, which had

been brought up with He ro d the

te trarch,  and Saul." This Saul

here was the  Apost le  Paul . No

t ice  that  the names of   five  men

are l isted he re. He  s tarts  with

Barna bas and ends with Saul.

He  said, "N ow ther e we re in

the  church  that  was at Antioch

certain prophets and teachers."

Each of the se  f ive  individuals

was either a prophet or a teach

er or both.

We  are concerned at the mo

ment  just  with two of them -

Barnabas and Saul. We know

Barnabas was a teac her, be

cause  the 11th chapter of   Acts

talk s about him teaching. I can't

find  anywhere where he had any

part  of a prophet's ministry, so

I  have come to the conclusion

that  he was a tea cher . Now Paul

was a teach er all righ t, becaus e

it tells of him teaching; but he

al so was a prop het bec ause it

speaks about him having vi si on s

and revelations, and those are

part  of a prophet's ministry.

V e r s e  2 goe s on to say, "A s

they..." I used to  think   this

*'they" referred to the  church  at

Antioch,  but it doesn't. It refers

to these  five  men. "A s they ministered to the  L o r d ,  and fasted,

the  Holy  Ghost said, Separat e

me  Barnabas and Saul fo r the

work   whereun to' I have calle d

them." It is my opinion  that

while  these  five  men wer e pra y

ing,  one of the others who was

a prophet (not Paul of co ur se )

said this . Th at is the reaso n

it says the  Holy  Ghost said it.

It  doesn 't say the  Holy  Ghost

said it to one of the individuals,but the  Holy  Ghost said some

thing to the  whole  gro up . So it is

my  opinion  that  He ministered

here by one of the prophets.

One  of the prophets spoke out,

"Thus  saith  the  Holy  Ghost...",

 jus t  like Agabus did in  Acts

21:10. What d id the  Holy  Ghost

say? "Separat e me Bar nabas

and Saul for the work whereunto

I  have called them."

T h e r e  is somethi ng to notice

here .  Barnabus and Saul weren't

ca l led  by this, but they we re

confi rmed  by it.  They  already

had the calling.  They  were al

rea dy in the cal li ng .  They  were

already in the ministry, but

God  was separating them to

another mi ni st ry - to be apo st

les to the G ent il es . You see ,

the way  that  Go d  puts  a maninto an  off ice  is by  g iving  him

a  gift  for the  task.  It might be

confi rmed  by prophec y so me

times, but he's not called  that

way.

Al l  the prop hes yin g in the  world

is not  going  to  g ive  a man the

gift  for  that  task.  I've seen

people  go into the min ist ry

 ju st  because someone laid hands

on them and prophesied  that

they were to preach or be an

evangelist  or be in the minis

try. These  folk   couldn't  give

even  a decent testimony, much

le ss pr each . Who would listen

to them? Som eti mes they don't

have enough sense to stop and

list en ^o rea son . Someone said,

" We l l ,  we  aren ' t  led by rea son. "

Wel l ,  so me ti me s you have to

have enough re as on to get in

out of the rain at leas t.

If   God has ca ll ed a per son to

the ministry, and has separated

him,  He  wil l give  that  person

the  gift  for the  task.  Paul and

Barnabas we re n' t cal led to the

mini stry by prophec y, they we re

alr ead y in the mi ni st ry. It was

 ju st  confirmed  that  God wanted

them to be apostles to the Gen

t i les .

So  you see  that  there is a  very

fine  line ac tual ly betw een there al and the fa lse - between

rea li ty and fanat icis m. It is

mighty  easy to step across  that

fine  li ne , and do a lot of da m

age .  So he re we are in Ful l

Gospel  ci rc le s, where we be

l ieve  in gifts of the Spirit and

so on; yet be caus e of the mi s

use and  abuse  and excess along

some lines, some people have

become  scared and  just  leave

al l  of it alone.  They  become

dead and dry and leave the

miraculous.

Then  there are those on the

other side  that  are ready to

accept  just  anything  that  goes

forth.  They  go off and  follow

what they call "the Spirit," and

" leave  the  wor ld . "  The n they

get  in the dit ch on the other

side of the road. God doesn't

want us to get in a ditch on

eit her side of the roa d; He

wants us to go right down the

middle  of the ro ad .

Beca use of so many things  that

go  on today, I would be  very

careful about pers ona l proph ec

ies  if I we re you. As long as itstays in the r e al m of speaking

to men to edifi cati on, exhor ta

tion, and comfort,  that  is  won

derful.  But I  think   what happens

many times is that someone who

prop hesi es se es a prophet min

ist er. He might som eti mes have

a  word  of for ekn owl edg e, and

they  think,  " We l l ,  I prophesy,

so I can do  that."  Then they

move  out of the place where

they should be into  this  other

re al m, and are mi sl ed and mi s guided.

at Corin th, Paul said , "L et the

prop hets speak two or th re e, and

le t  the o ther judge." It is  sup

posed to be judged the  Bible

say s. Pro ph ecy is not to be

I  have enjoyed your monthly  lessons  so

very  much and used your complete  lessons

on  prayer  In Sunday School last  Fall. This

morning  a young  married  lady in our

church  cal led me to say ihat her husband

had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit

last night as the result of reading your

lesson on the  Prayer  of Faith.  Thank you

We  have been listening to your radio

program  and enjoy it very much. Since we

have  been listening, our faith has been

built  up and I have received healing for

migraine  headaches  from  which I have

suffered  for more than eighteen years.

I  was taking as high as six pain tablets

a day and still  no relief. P rai se God! G.M.

It  was October 1970 when I first heard

your  tape on healing. My  wife was listening

to one of your tapes and  since  I was a

diabetic at that time, I soon became veryinterested. Suddenly something you said

stirred  my spirit and I became "glued"

to that tape. I felt the  word  of truth pene

trate my very being. I know now it was

the Holy Spirit telling me that it was true.

Since that time many wonderful things h£ve

happened.  Your  ministry through tape is

reaching  many people. We pass theni

around  and hold meetings in homes to

play  them. Praise God! J.R.

Some twenty-six months ago I had a heart

attack and was in and out of the hospital'

about  seventeen times. I was given only a

10% chance to live. I wrote to you and

requested  prayer  for healing and the

Lord  healed me. Since that time I have

moved  to another  city  and the  Lord healed

me so wel l that the doctors here don't

believe that I had a heart attack. I have

one doctor now and that Is Jesus. J.M.
