WOC Final Review 2011-12Spring Semester
Your final is a Gains test, similar to what you had for the first semester final. Your best resource for
studying is your WREN book. Please go back over your green and yellow WREN books and practice
those skills. You should know the following things:
Magic Lens
Know clauses and clause patterns. They help you punctuate appropriately.
I = Independent Clause (Subject + Verb + Complete Thought)D=Dependent Clause (Missing one or more of: Subject + Verb + Complete Thought)
USUALLY BEGINS WITH AN ABBI!!!!
Basic Configurations for Sentences:
1. I = Sally saw seashells.2. ID = Sally saw seashells while Peter picked peppers.3. D , I = Before Peter picked peppers, Sally saw seashells.4. I , cc I = Sally saw seashells, but Peter picked peppers.
I ; I = Sally saw seashells; Peter picked peppers.

Newer Configurations:

Conventions of Punctuation16-19
1. Review and know the 7 basic comma rules2. Know the difference between commas, parentheses, and dashes3. Know how and when to use quotation marks4. MLA and ACT both require the comma before the and within a series of items
Sam I am ate eggs, ham, and toast.
5. Commas always go between a city and state.Rolling Meadows, Illinois.
6. Delete commas that disturb sentence flow.
20-231. Use commas to set off parenthetical phrases.2. All nonessentials MUST BE SURROUNDED BY PUNCTUATION!
