18th Sunday in Ordinary Time During this past winter, an unemployed mom ran out of hea ng oil and had no way of paying for more. She and her children were struggling to stay warm and huddled around a toaster for heat. The house was so cold that drops of water in the kitchen sink were turning into ice. One day, a truck showed up and delivered enough oil to heat the house for a month, all due to the kindness of a neighbor who had heard of their plight and decided to do something for them. It was a huge relief for her that not only chased the cold out, but also gave her a sense of hope for the future. God provides for all our needs and some mes we are the providers. It is easy to write a check for the hungry children in Africa, but so much more di cult to volunteer at the local soup kitchen, or make a dinner for an elderly neighbor or invite someone in need to your home. Jesus did not send the crowd to someone else for food; He sent the Apostles and He sends us. Help someone who needs food, or clothes or warmth. Meet more than their physical needs; give them hope! ~James Ga ney, © 2008 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing

FAITHSHARE 1. COVID-19 impacted you? Living during a pandemic is something I never imagined would happen to me. I thought pandemics were things that only happened in the Middle Ages. I have been going on vaca on in Maine with my extended family for a week each summer for the last 15 years. This year our vaca on had to be cancelled. I was pre y upset about it but the more I thought about it I realized that my family has been blessed to remain healthy and working. If the biggest sacri ce I have to make is missing a week’s vaca on, I’m doing very well. There are many people who have become very sick and died or lost family members without being able to say goodbye. There are also many people who have lost their jobs. I am trying to accept the minor incon-veniences with grace and pa ence, keeping the situa on in perspec ve. 2. What do you miss most about your parish? I have only been a member of the Woburn Catholic Collabora ve for a few years a er having moved to Wo-burn from Stoneham. I was just beginning to feel like I was ge ng to know people and was very much en-joying my new spiritual home. I miss the opportunity to con nue building rela onships and also the im-mense peace I would feel par cipa ng in Mass each week. 3. How do you communicate with others? I have been communica ng with people through all the virtual means possible but that certainly doesn’t replace in-person communica on. My extended family started a weekly game night at the beginning of the pandemic on Zoom. We have played virtual Yahtzee, Pokeno and Bingo together which has been really fun and a great way for us to keep in touch while we are physically separated. 4. How has your faith helped you? My faith has helped me because I know that no ma er what I am going through, God is there with me. God is much bigger than anything that happens in life, including a pandemic. I belong to a Cursillo reunion group that used to meet in person once a month. Since the pandemic started we have been mee ng on Zoom every other week which has been a huge blessing. There have been silver linings in the cloud of the pan-demic. 5. What words of encouragement can you o er? Hang in there and keep the faith! I think this me can be a me to reevaluate what we thought were abso-lute givens in our lives and make adjustments based on what is most important, what God’s will is for us. I recently stumbled upon this scripture passage from St. Paul’s Le er to the Romans, which I think is appro-priate for the me we nd ourselves in, “Rejoice in hope, endure in a ic on, persevere in pray-er.” (Romans 12:12)
