It is an exciting time to be part of the World Match Racing Tour as we continue to realise our ambitious development plan to ensure the series remains the flag bearer for match racing around the world. Having launched a new boat design brief, we have been delighted by the quality and variety of proposals submitted by boat design houses across the world, each being aware that the WMRT offers them the best possible shop window in which to showcase their innovative designs. I am delighted to unveil the approved designers selected by a team that included several professional skippers. The selection clearly demonstrates the appetite for bigger, more manoeuvrable monohull race boats and we look forward to working closely with prospective new venues and current promoters to embed these within the framework of the Tour. Each design house has put in a significant amount of work to create a specialised boat for match racing. We encourage you to review the following presentation and make contact with the designers directly for a more detailed proposition to construct your match racing fleets.

How Does The Design and Delivery Process Work?

Who builds the boats? Once an Event Organiser chooses a boat designer, they need to appoint a competent boat builder to build a fleet of nine, ideally in close proximity to the Event Organiser’s location. However, this isn’t mandatory – so the boat could be built somewhere else and transported to the venue. How much flexibility is there in the designs? The Event Organiser have the right to ask the designer to modify the design to take into account factors specific to the Venue or Event, such as wind and depth of water. What is the timing in terms of initial delivery? The Event Organiser will provide a final design drawing of the fleet boats. The build contract will then be structured in such a way that all the Boats are delivered to the Event Organiser at least three months prior to the first event.

What will the boats be used for across the year? To pay for itself, the fleet needs to be used throughout the year for events such as local match racing championships, corporate charter, promotional days and so on. How will WMRT ensure the boats are Match Race ready? It is the Event Organiser’s responsibility to appoint a professional to ensure that all of the boats are kept in excellent condition and remain identical at all times (to ensure fair racing). They need to make sure the boats are ready for each qualifying event. This means the boats need to be race ready from at least two weeks prior to the practice day of each event until the end of the event. What kind of controls exist? WMRT has the right to inspect the boats at any time to make sure that: a) they are being constructed and maintained in line with the design specification and b) they are ready for any deadlines.

Introduction The AJ42 Match is a new match racing boat designed by the young designer Adrien Jousset in collaboration with Neal Pawson. From their sailing experience and after an intensive research on what the best match racing boat should be, the designers are proud to release their concept. With a main focus on media coverage with a spacious cockpit including dedicated locations for cameramen and journalist, the design insures excellent film footage from all direction and exceptional media return through television, key for sponsorship. Light displacement hull with excellent performances in light conditions, the AJ 42 Match is the fruit of a teamwork of the best expertise's in the yachting industry. With the ability to be easily shipped from venue to venue, fitting in a 40ft container with a price lower than most of the competitors and with the best accuracy of construction from hull to hull, the AJ 42 Match has been designed especially for the World Tour. It is a really exciting boat to watch increasing people’s interest in sailing and in match racing. The grinding pedestal, the spinnaker chute, her esthaetic design, her top square main are just few of her features. Thanks to her removable bow, stern and keel and low maintenance construction, down time is reduced and the AJ 42 Match can keep to the intense schedule of the world best sailors competition.

Experience Adrien Jousset was graduated from the Southampton Solent University in yacht design. After several years spent working for world famous yacht designers such as Tony Castro, BMT, Ted Hood… he became independent offering subcontracting services in naval architecture. He renowned himself in many yacht design competitions such as the Next Sly Contest and the Young Designer Superyacht awards. He attracted a large amount of media attention from magazines to web sites all over the world praising his work for its quality of innovation and feasibility. Sailing from his earliest age, he has many years of racing experience, including inshore and offshore competitions at National and European levels in One Design, Solo, IRC and PHRF. During his experience he produced a lot of research on hydrodynamic performances and sea keeping capabilities. He undertook numerous improvements, combining upgraded aesthetic appeal with enhanced performances, capabilities and practicality. He has been involved in various sailing yacht projects such as GP26, Mini Transat, One Design and cruising sailing boats ranging from 29 to 60 feet.

Video and photo shooting will be taken from all direction and all angles generating unique footage in the thick of the action. the boat The design brief for the BD was to produce a great match racing boat. With that in mind, we decided to put together a team with different skills, to be able to optimize all the aspects of the project, from yacht design to boat handling and racing rules. BD was designed to exploit the match racing ability of the yacht, while keeping good speed and performance within the overall dimension of 41 feet, which is easy to handle on and off the water. Good stability, which means the attitude to sail fast in the breeze, was obtained while using non exotic construction materials to contain overall costs. Bow and stern where designed plumb to facilitate overlap calls from the Umpires, and a narrow stern beam was chosen to enhance pre-start helmsman and crew abilities. Foils area was selected to achieve full control at low speeds and in any racing situation and to provide close interaction between the boats, with tight action around the course and good exploitation of the Racing Rules. Sail area and displacement were selected to provide good agility in light winds, during the prestart and tacking, with good performance in the medium-heavy range. CFD has been used to finalize the hull shape and boat balance. Great care was given to keep the correct fore and aft trim with the crew in its working position to help boat handling, therefore ensuring very close racing. The basic crew number is from six to seven. The construction materials selected are E glass, corecell and vinylester resin to keep costs down and facilitate maintenance work. The choice of the Sp-High Modulus B3 SmartPac ensures consistency of build across all the boats.

The rubber inserts in the bow, stern and, possibly, sides will take care of any minor contacts, avoiding the need to postpone scheduled races to repair boat damages. Simplicity, performance, boat control and budget are the key elements of this project.

roberto biscontini Born in Pesaro, Italy, February 26th, 1957, he starts sailing at an early age and then races on Laser and IOR boats. In 1975, when still in high school, he designs, builds and races an IOR Quarter Tonner, followed by the design of other IOR boats. In 1981 he receives his degree in Yacht Design from Southampton Institute, England, followed by working experience in the design offices of Scott Kaufman and Gary Mull. In 1985 he establishes his own design office in Milano, Italy and in 1986 he designs a composite structure for the 12M Azzurra, approved by Lloyds. In 1988 he receives his MSc degree in aeronautical engineering from Cranfield, England. In 1989 he starts to design for America’s Cup Teams, working with Il Moro di Venezia from 1989 to 1992, Pact95 from 1993 to 1994, Young America from 1996 to 2000, Oracle Racing from 2000 to 2003, Luna Rossa from 2004 to 2007. From 2007 to 2010 he is with Team New Zealand, working on the AC90, the AC33 and the Camper Volvo 70 projects. He is an expert in yacht design and naval architecture, vpp and performance predictions, aero and hydrodynamics, and deeply involved in experimental (towing tank and wind tunnel) and numerical (cfd) analysis of sailing yachts.

francesco de angelis

Born in Naples, Italy, September 11th, 1960. Member of Circolo del Remo e della Vela “Italia”, Yacht Club Punta Ala and Yacht Club Italiano. He has been World Champion six times in different classes: 1987 Capri J24 class, 1989 Naples One Ton Cup, 1992 Copenhagen One Ton Cup, 1995 Denmark ILC40 class, 1996 Athens ILC40 class, 2008 Athens ORC international. Winner of the 1995 Admiral’s Cup, Sardinia Cup three times, Swan Cup twice, 1997 Channel Race (Handicap overall), 2005 Rolex Middle Sea Race (Line Honors and Handicap overall). His palmarès includes two European titles and nine national championships. He has been always involved in the technical aspects of sailing yachts, focusing on boat and sails development. In 2000, as Skipper of Prada Challenge, he was the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup in Auckland. Steering Luna Rossa (ITA45) and representing Yacht Club Punta Ala, he raced in the XXX America’s Cup against NZ60. In 2003 he campaigned for the XXXI America’s Cup as Skipper and helmsman of Luna Rossa, reaching the semi-finals, sailing against One World Challenge. In 2007 he participated with Luna Rossa, as Team Director and Skipper to the XXXII America’s Cup, representing Yacht Club Italiano. He reached the Louis Vuitton finals, sailing against Team New Zealand. The Italian Olympic Committee has awarded him with three Gold Medals and in 2000 he was nominated Honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) by the New Zealand Government.

marco mercuriali Born in Cesena, Italy, February 23rd, 1958, Marco begins to race on dinghies and he is in the Finn national team until 1982. In the same period he is a crew member of Azzurra and in 1983 he is in Newport for the first Italian challenge in America’s Cup. He works with the Italian Sailing Federation as a coach and he is with the Italian Team in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2008 Beijing. From 1994 he is involved with Match Race and in 1997 he joins the Prada Luna Rossa Team as umpire and rule advisor. With Luna Rossa he participates in three America’s Cups: Auckland 2000 and 2003, Valencia 2007. He is International Umpire from 1998 and he is in the Umpire teams of some major events like the World Match Race Tour and the Louis Vuitton Series. From 2008 Marco is the Chief Umpire in the RC 44 Circuit, managing direct umpiring on the water in both the Match-Race and Fleet series.

The wide open cockpit providing excellent crew space for racing, sail training , corporate and multi usage events. According to the WMRT Boat Design Brief boat size span and to the diversity of sailing conditions in the potential WMRT venues, considering also the possibillity of various secondary use of the fleets, we decided to develop: 2 different concepts for 5 yacht designs in total The preliminary designs are intended to establish the first contanct and to start the exchange of ideas.

QuantumLeap!and QuantumLeap" yachts are designed as:Inshore Match Racers and as Offshore Racers. The carbon or aluminum mast is fitted with non structural runners to allow better trim. The forestay fitting and the chainplates are positioned well inboard to protect the mast. For MR racing the yachts will be used in the basic „naked“ outfit – the interior is empty except for the structures, steps and engine compartement, the deck hardware is reduced to the essential, a lower camera roll bar/umpire pushpit is fitted to make the umpire (in the life raft well) position more comfortable and protected. The boats can be fitted with rubber (moulded PU foam) bow bumper and sheer protection stripes that extend to and wrap arround the stern. For Offshore racing the yachts are fitted with modular interior – small but complete head with bulkheads and door, galley block, chart table and pipe berths are positioned (companionway is designed to allow this operation). On the deck some hardware components are fitted or substituted to better match offshore racing requirements - pulpits stanchions and life lines are fitted, life rafts can be positioned in the dedicated well and a higher roll bar, for the on board camera, communication antennas and optional radar, is fitted. a fixed bowsprit is fitted, to prevent water infiltration and to offer a more stable platform for reaching sails. Water Ballast tanks can be used when racing offshore or shorthanded. Mast is fitted with checkstays for better trim and to increase safety margins when sailing with WB in heavy offshore conditions.

CODE 2, CODE 1 and CODE 0 yachts are designed as Match Racers and as Inshore Day Racers. The yacht is designed with removable stern and bow. A two piece (if required for easy transport and storage) carbon or aluminum mast is fitted with non structural runners to allow better trim – no need to use them in MR prestart and circling. Two different draft keels were considered, already at this design stage, to better fit the venue requirements. Further upgrades or downgrades in materials, production technology, equipment, deck hardware...... can/will be checked and implemented in the proces of design finalization for the known client . The rounded chine aft minimizes the impact damage, furthermore the boats can be fitted with rubber (moulded PU foam) crashbow (instead of the standard GRP) and sheer protection stripes that extend to and wrap arround the optionally removable stern. The forestay fitting and the chainplates are positioned well inboard to protect the mast. All the Yachts are designed to minimize boat to boat impact damage Because of the GelCoat external finish of all the composite parts, other damages (transport, storage and sailing) can be repaired in the same way as on any other serial production boat. Very simple design of structures makes access and maintenance of all the systems and equipment very easy. All the deck hardware is well oversized, the blocks are (wherever possible) fixed with loops (lashing), that makes sailing safe and minimizes the hardware maintenance.

Andrej Justin, born 1959 in Koper, Slovenia at the Adriatic coast, finished elementary and high school in Koper, studied Civil Engineering at the University in Ljubljana, Architecture in Graz (Austria) and graduated in Yacht Design at the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology (USA) in 1993. Living and working in Ljubljana, married since 1984 and has one 15 year old son.

JustinDesign Established in 1993, worked for several European, UAE and Australian boatyards (from Elan in Slovenia to Fastlane Marine in Australia), developed 34 projects from Crocodile 25‘ day sailer to PJ 92‘ blue water cruiser. Working on new designs with our clients (that are often very expert sailors) and specially sailing on all the yachts we designed we realized that the essence of a good design is in the ballance of curves, areas and volumes. Even the most extreme design must be proportional to be seaworthy and to perform well all around – what looks good performs well. PORTFOLIO

“I am excited by this design! In light winds it will be a real flyer and in heavy breeze it will be an exhilarating and exciting ride!”

The challenge for this WMRT boat design is to find something for everyone. On the one hand, the boat wants to be modern, fast, exciting, but it also needs to be simple, affordable and easy to set up. In some cases, the boat will be raced at the highest level by very experienced crew, but, then again, it will also be sailed at times by less experienced sailors. This design is the result of several discussions between Phil Kaiko and Gavin Brady. Gavin and I have worked together on a number of projects and, because we view the project from different perspectives, the combination of our thoughts often leads to a unique solution. In addition, I have consulted with a number of other professional sailors, mainly match racers, to get their ideas on this design as well. Of course, most of those I spoke with wanted to see a fun, exciting boat, but it also became clear that, for the racing to be good, the boats must be equal in speed and the setup of the boat must be simple and consistent. Importantly, this boat has to suit multiple venue possibilities. I therefore tried to make the design as flexible as possible. In fact, this design has three distinct variations to choose from. The three vary in length (from 38 to 48 feet), but share a similar look and feel so that they clearly come from the same family. We have looked at multiple keel, rig, and sailplan variations and feel the design can be altered according to the specific needs of the venue. It is our hope to eventually tailor this design further, according to the local venue requirements.

IntroductionThe Reflex MR is the culmination of my long time interest in designing to meet the particular requirements of a match racing fleet that dates back to the 1990’s.

The challenge in designing a yacht that the world’s best sailors find demanding yet rewarding to sail that also has the good manners and stability to allow novices and VIP’s to enjoy a day on the water – regardless of the weather conditions - is no small one!

Similarly the challenge in producing a robust and cost effective yacht that has features to make the operational aspects run more smoothly and efficiently is an added dimension to the problem – but one we relish!

The Reflex MR has the unique features of fitting in a 40ft container, some clever details to reduce damage and ease repair, a long and slender hull form which is both as effective as it is attractive, with great all round performance that won’t let weather spoil the day and to top it all can be easily reconfigured from race mode to corporate mode.

It was not easy to fulfil all these criteria, but we believe we have produced an eye catching yacht that will keep on doing what’s been asked of it for many years.

ExperienceChristian Stimson has been designing yachts for almost 25 years, with experience ranging from superyacht tenders to 40-50ft race yachts to 80ft cruising yachts. The underlying philosophy is always one of imparting as much performance, balanced with control and good manners, as is possible within the design brief. To achieve this, Stimson Yachts Ltd utilises state-of-the-art design tools from 3D CAD modeling and VPP programs to CFD analysis software.

Christian has been involved in Match Racing at all levels throughout his career, as a sailor in local Solent-based events, designer of other match racing yachts and as a member of the core design team for the GBR Challenge America’s Cup syndicate in 2003. As a result, he has an appreciation not only of the design elements of match racing, but also of the operational and technical aspects, as well as the racing itself. This multi-faceted experience has already been applied to a 36ft match racer, which serves as a ‘proof of concept’ for the Reflex MR (more details of which are towards the end of this section).

Stimson Yachts has interpreted the brief as requiring both performance and responsiveness in order for world class sailors to reap the most reward, as well as providing stability, control and good manners for corporate or sail training activities. Designing a fleet of yachts to such a demanding brief is something of which Stimson Yachts has previous proven experience.

The Clipper Ventures Reflex 38 for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston is an evergreen design that is still winning 10 years on – in 2009 one of the fleet was awarded RORC Yacht of the Year, IRC division 1 and Offshore Championship Overall Winner – and is well loved by those who sail them.

The Reflex MR has been developed from an existing 36ft Stimson design intended specifically for Match Racing. In addition to the conditions of the WMRT design brief, there are further operational requirements and considerations that include Sail Training and Corporate Hospitality activities. The key elements in this new 38ft design that make it ideally suited to Match Racing and the other activities are summarized here:

CONTAINERISATION – the box dimensions of the Reflex MR permit the hull (on a cradle) to fit within a standard High Cube 40ft container or MAAFI. To reduce the stowed draft, the design features a ‘lowering boat’ rather than ‘lifting keel’ concept whereby the keel head is unbolted from the cockpit sole and the boat lowered around it. This minimises complex lifting procedures and securing mechanisms. Similarly the rig has a joint below the bottom spreaders, at a point where additional reinforcement would be placed by the spar maker anyway. This forms a ‘splice’ that allows the rig length to be reduced to fit within the container. Stepping the rig through the back of the cuddy rather than through deck partners further speeds up assembly. The rudder and all other deck gear (such as winches) remain in place, but the wheel is removed, resulting in an assembly or breakdown time of well under 4hrs (and nearer 2hrs) is possible.

DAMAGE MITIGATION – the Reflex MR has a three-tier approach to damage mitigation. First, all fittings, chainplates, backstays and any other hardware that may cause damage or be damaged are located within the perimeter of the yacht, and there is no bowsprit or prod to break off. Second, there are PU rubber ‘bumpers’ at the stem, transom corners and all around the deck edge. Third there is a sacrificial ‘crash box’ at the stem and stern designed to crumple and absorb energy when impacted. The same crash box components are designed to sheer off in the event of a high energy collision and are easily replaceable sub mouldings carried as spares. In addition, the compartments adjacent to the crash boxes are watertight. Furthermore the foam cored topsides are developable surfaces, i.e. curved in one direction only, making them easy to repair with a temporary ‘in the field’ mould or former, whereas the compound curvature in the hull bottom is solid laminate, without core, which is better for taking the craning/cradle loads.

AESTHETICS – the long, slender hull with overhangs fore and aft harks back to some of the most beautiful yachts ever used for match racing – the J-class from the early days of the America’s Cup. Their successors in the 12 metre class and more recently the IACC class share the same fundamental form, and the Reflex MR reflects the most recent evolution by adopting the distinctive square-topped mainsail and asymmetric spinnakers tacked on the stem head. The intrinsic beauty of these yachts is immensely photogenic, and the imagery resulting from any event adopting them will be stunning.

ALL ROUND PERFORMANCE – the reason the Reflex MR has the long, overhanging form is as much to do with performance as it is looks. To allow the yacht to sail in very light airs the short waterline and low wetted surface means a smaller sail plan can be set. As the wind picks up the yacht heels, the waterline length increases, and so does the speed. The ballast keel and bulb that keep the yacht upright are now working against a smaller sailplan, which only has to propel a slender, low drag hull. Compared to other yacht styles this is a very efficient all-round solution. The yacht’s performance is such that she sails at pretty much the windspeed up to 7knots, when she hits her maximum boatspeed. This ensures races can be run in the full spectrum of weather conditions and the events not called off. A spin-off of the yacht’s non-extreme parameters and well rounded performance profile is a competitive IRC rating of around 1.125.

TWO MODES – the Reflex MR is conceived to function effectively as both a demanding match racing yacht and a safe training or entertainment platform. It achieves this by having two distinct modes of configuration based on the underlying platform. The basic hull, keel and rudder set up is both fast and controllable. Match racing requires the yachts to have excellent handling characteristics, and much design time was spent on the foils to achieve this using state of the art CFD and VPP software. For corporate or training activities, the rig can be reconfigured by either reefing the square head mainsail to below the backstays and locking them off, or setting a conventional roach mainsail to tack under the backstay. The helm, being a wheel, needs to be a large as possible for match racing, but for corporate days where taking turns or moving around the boat is required a smaller diameter wheel is easily fitted. A further refinement could be to have the headsail on a furler rather than hanks.

The 36 footer shown here was designed by Stimson Yachts Ltd in response to a similar brief to the WMRT 38 and illustrates our previous experience in this field.

The brief called for a containerable match race yacht, suitable for both experienced racing crews as well as sail training and corporate hospitality, that could be set up and broken down in a short period of time.

With the tenon-and-socket keel head the WMRT stated limit of 4hrs to set-up/breakdown is easily achieved.

The balance of hull form, sail plan, keel and rudder proportions have all been designed and proven to impart excellent all-round performance and a high degree of control.

The extremely high stability of this design is indicated by the ISO/CE category A attained through a STIX value in excess of 32. This is the highest possible category.

These characteristics will be carried over into the Reflex MR for the WMRT.
