Prez Says Prez Says Prez Says Prez Says MarchMarchMarchMarch 2014201420142014 Motorcycling is alive and well. That’s my observation. There seems to be an increasing swell of old, new, obscure and even odd bikes being customised into “Cafe Racers”. And it’s not only riders in their 40s, 50s, and 60s and beyond, its young guys joining clubs like Melbourne Cafe Racers. It’s great to see young guys not only riding GSXYZFZX1000RRRRRR type bikes. I think it shows class and coolness riding customised Cafe Racers. What prompted me to this was following a bike this morning that I’ve been looking at for about 2 months now. It’s normally parked on the footpath outside a coffee shop in Douglas Parade. Some of you may have seen it, Silver Honda Cafe Racer, single cylinder maybe a 150 or 250, a tiny little thing but very neat. Anyway, saw it on its way to the coffee shop (I was early) I love that bike! I must drop in and have a chat with the owner. Maybe get him to bring it to a club event. You should receive this newsletter (by email) before Bikes by the Bay, I know I have been pushing this event, but especially for those new members its a really important event for our club. If we are lucky the weather gods will smile on us and the bikes, people, kids will come in droves. We can use as many volunteers as we can get. So if you can help on the day-this Sunday 23rd March-some of us will be there from 6.30am. If you can only spare 1-2 hours through the day that’s fine, it gives others a break. Please consider. Ride Safe and see you Sunday! Sandy Ellul

now pay attention …

Annual General Meeting Tuesday 3 June Memberships are due for renewal by this date. Only financial members effective 3 June can vote for or serve on the committee. Bring your cash with you. All elected committee positions are automatically ‘vacated’ and available for nominations. The elected positions are:

• President • Vice-President • Secretary • Treasurer • Ride Captain

As well as the elected positions, there are a number of non-elected positions that, while currently filled, the current incumbents may want a break or a bit of help if someone has a particular skill they would like to exercise. If someone is interested in a position, they should talk to the current incumbent to find out what the job entails and whether it’s likely to be available to be filled or expanded at the AGM. The non-elected positions are:

• Social Coordinator (currently two, but can be more) • Classic Coordinator • Membership Officer • Classic Scrutineer (currently two) • Merchandise Officer • Webmaster • Newsletter Editor • Bikes by the Bay Coordinator (planning to have a BbtB Sub-Committee of three or four for 2015) • Also considering expanding the committee to include an Assistant Ride Captain

While they’re all happy to keep putting into the club, the current committee has undergone very few changes in the last several years, so whether we like it or not it’s time for some new blood. Remember, the more you put into your club the more you get out of it! Membership Fees to Rise The annual membership fee will be rising from $45 to $50. A family membership will now be $60. This is the first rise for a few years and has to been undertaken due to increases in costs such as our indemnity insurance, the fee for the BBTB venue and other expenses. Joining WMCC The procedure for joining the club is currently under review by the committee. The Committee

5th and 6th April 2014

Its on again!!! The overnight ride to Port Fairy!!!

The idea is to recreate the ride in 2013 to Port Fairy by members of the Club and leave on Saturday morning (5th April) from Cafe Cirino after a great coffee at 10am and then stopping for lunch at Apollo Bay after riding through Moriac and Forrest. After lunch, we head to Port Campbell, Warrnambool and then to Port Fairy. The best accommodation in Port Fairy is the Comfort Inn and accommodation isn’t a problem this far out. So let Ross or Sandy know you are coming and book the accommodation!! We will have dinner at the Saltra Brassiere on Saturday night and ride home on the Sunday. This will be after BBTB and just before the Easter Tasmania ride.

Selected photos from last year’s Port Fairy weekend!

Ride to Avoca 16 March 14 Andrew

The ride kicked off with a 50 minute/76km run up the M8 to Ballan where is was 11C at 11am! Importantly the sky was clear and it would warm up to about 18C. From Ballan we rode for 100km over a variety of roads, some only wide enough for a motorcar. The VicPol Ford Territory pulled over, but the driver didn’t slow down and we were showered with crap. Oh well at least he didn’t book us – and he could have. Following lunch some returned directly to Melbourne and the remainder rode to Daylesford via the Pyrenees Highway and Newstead. At Daylesford some then rode directly to the Western Highway and Melbourne, while Andrew, Rose, Ross, Penny, Phil, and Russell had a coffee at Cliffy’s before returning via Trentham etc. Thankyou and congratulations to everyone for attending and making a good, uneventful, 360km ride. There were 21 at lunch, but only 20 names in my book so I have missed someone. * Always good to see a couple of Club Permit motorcycles on a real club ride.

Classics

Ian Lihou Remember that if you are in the mood for a ride on any first Sunday of any month it may be worth calling past Cafe Cirino. Upcoming rides for the Classics are varied:

March 23rd Bikes by The Bay March 30th The Vincent HRD Australian National Rally at Marysville Victoria.

I have been the Classic Bike Co-Ordinator and for about 4 years now and recently made a dramatic discovery. I have been doing it WRONG. And wrong in an important way. After 4 years or so I decided to read the fine print under the bit signed by a WMCC authorised person on the Club Permit Application form, and I quote : " As a duly authorised representative of the club, I certify that the applicant indicated above is a current financial member of this club, and that the vehicle described above is an eligible vehicle (as defined in the conditions of Permit Issue Section below, is safe for use on a highway, and complies with any relevant safety standards notified by Vic Roads)" My italics. In other words when the initial application is signed the vehicle is being certified as being safe for the road. As WMCC does not provide an official letter for this purpose and the only other resort is to get a RWC any WMCC official signing the application for a vehicle entering the CPS MUST SIGHT THE RWC before signing. Nothing changes for renewals but new applications must now have a RWC supplied before the CPS application is signed. Small but important details.

One Man’s Love for his Lav’One Man’s Love for his Lav’One Man’s Love for his Lav’One Man’s Love for his Lav’ Part 2Part 2Part 2Part 2

……From last Month!! Ian Lihou

The 17/10/2013 was a big day for emails and this one certainly got some attention, if the last series was a little ugly this is now getting a LOT ugly. The email below I sent to Mick Bromley at Performance Wholesale in Qld:

“Good morning Mick, I am waiting for rings for my Jota which is being reconditioned by Greg Callaway. On the 23rd of August you told Greg they would be leaving the USA “next week” i.e. the last week of August. Due to the fact that the rings, as of yesterday, had not been delivered, I have been in contact with TotalSeal USA (Ed Law and Joey Moriarty) and they informed me a conventional set was ordered on the 23 of Sept (exactly 1 month after you said they would be leaving the USA) the correct set were eventually ordered on Oct 8th and as of yesterday they still weren’t delivered. What the FUCK is going on? Did you notice the frustration? My bike has sat for 1 month at Greg’s waiting for rings. This service is to say the least pretty ordinary, if I was being brutally honest I would say it is shithouse service. Please let me know when the correct rings will be delivered to Greg.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the 18/10/2013 I received 2 emails from Keith Jones at Total seal

“Ian, Hi I'm the person that Mick At Performance initially contacted about the Laverda rings. I want to apologize for the poor service you experienced from them. I know you were in contact with Ed Law here but just to run down the details. The initial order request was quoted to them on 09-11-2013 and at that time were informed that these were not a shelf stocking item and would require about 5 business days to complete. The order was placed with us on 09-23-13 and completed on the 26th, shipped on the 27th with their weekly order. I was then contacted on 10-08-13 and informed that "they" meant to order gapless but ordered conventional rings. I custom made new gapless 2nd rings as we did not have them on the shelf and were completed on 10-09-13. I just wanted you to be aware that we've done all we can to process these requests as quickly as possible. I will be in contact with them about this later today as it is the middle of the night your time as I type this. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to help with this situation. And I again apologize for the poor service you received from them. Best Regards Keith Jones Total Seal Inc. Ian, Re-reading my prior message I feel I may have tossed Mick & the guy's at PW under the bus a bit and that is the last thing I wanted to or intended to do. They do a VERY good job for us there and are usually very efficient at what they do. Unfortunately the timing of these orders may have added lead time as we ship to them on fridays. If an order comes in on say thursday and we need a couple days to complete it won't ship until the next friday and that adds another weeks lead time so on and so on. I'm sure you see the point I'm trying to make.

As previously stated we do apologize for the issues and hope you will give them and us another chance. Best Regards Keith Jones” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then a response from Mick Bromley: “Hi Ian I have tried to call you on both landline and mobile phones, Ian, I would prefer to talk about this situation rather than email. Nevertheless I will partially respond here for you. I don’t appreciate the abuse although I can understand your frustration, you don’t understand, and I don’t expect you to, the volume, pace and pressure we deal with here on a daily basis with thousands of customers nationally and 130 brands of manufacturer. I have been in parts for 26 years and here for nearly 9. I know my product well! That said, I made a mistake on your job, and the oil rings were on back order for a couple of weeks. Even though we have our best service from Total Seal, Americans DO NOT tell you when parts are nil, or when they will be available. It’s up to us to chase them when they don’t turn up here, the communication is not great, but that’s how it is. Almost 100% the custom sets take two weeks, yours did not, I failed then to chase them up quick enough for Greg. When they did arrive, Greg tells me they took 5 days to get them on TNT’s overnight air service. I have never heard of that happening, ever.( I can elaborate on these verbally if you wish) There was a series of events that compounded the situation from normal to bad. Because I am to blame for some of these issues and I represent Performance Wholesale, I sent the gapless 2nd rings at no charge (you have the option of keeping the conventional 2nds at no cost) via express post at Greg’s request which after 2 days has still not arrived. You obviously have a logistics issue with freight companies to make matters worse. Between TS and ourselves we are happy to help in some way to rectify any problems to please you or get you racing, and maintain the integrity of our companies. This company is built and is maintained by good proven service for over 40 years. I apologise for your unique experience. If you need to contact us regarding other parts, you don’t have to deal with me, there are 7 others here quite capable, some less busy than I am. Mick’

So after weeks of seemingly nothing happening, frustration growing and a very abusive email I spoke to Mick Bromley on the phone. He took his time and calmly and politely explained the situation and with my hackles now lowered I wrote the following to Mick: “Hi Mick, just a quick email to say thanks for the time and effort you put into the email you sent and the phone call you made today explaining the situation in regard to the delays in sourcing rings for my Jota. The frustration I was experiencing was obvious by the tone and content of my email but thanks to your responses I have a lot more confidence in your ability to deliver and am looking forward to receiving the parts very soon.

I am sure all of these issues will be forgotten once the bike is on the road and running like it should. Regards Ian”

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But that wasn't the end of the saga, oh no. Seems the end gaps weren't right and assembly had to wait a day or so for Greg to get a new file. :( ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8/11/2013 and good news the bike is finished ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12/11/2013, But that wasn't the end of the saga, oh no

“Hi Ian Just went to start your bike and the starter won't grip, more compression now. Will have to rebuild it. Fuck it. Give me a call. Greg”

It seems the starter motor clutch is made up of little rollers and thingamees that are now having trouble starting a motor with good compression in all cylinders instead of just 1. Luckily Greg was able to sort this problem out in a day ☺

Then the tank was full of crap and it hard to be resealed. No point putting dirty fuel through nice new carbies. I had heard horror stories about sealing tanks and how paint can be destroyed etc but I used a product from Caswell Plating (http://www.caswellplating.com.au/) which was easy to use and seems to have done the trick, no ewky bits in the filter. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then when it was all just about ready to go, I damaged a grommet used to mount the instruments and had to wait another couple of weeks to get the bits from Canada. But that time came and went and the gauges were fitted and the bike started and ran and sounded better than it had ever sounded to me. The first real run I took was a trip through Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, Meredith to Colac and then an overnight visit in Winchelsea then the ferry and home. A couple of firsts on this trip.

First first for the bike was how good it felt, strong and revvy, excellent. Second first was I ran out of fuel, completely, bone dry at 180kms when I normally go to reserve at 200kms. When I put more fuel in it the overflow on carby 3 poured fuel out leading me to believe a needle was stuck. I summoned all my technical expertise and hit it, which cured it, which was good because after that I was out of ideas. I calculated I got about 9 litres per 100kms.

And that is it. What I have learned is many things don't go as planned. Patience is a virtue. Sometimes an abusive email will make you feel better and get a response but they prolly wont really fix anything and a Laverda on song and crip is fast and enjoyable. Now all I have to do is learn to ride properly. By the way if you are doing a rebuild I suggest you check these guys out. http://www.totalseal.com/

Miles for SmilesMiles for SmilesMiles for SmilesMiles for Smiles Ray Lindner

A message from Ray: This trip has been full of road hazards along the way and you have read about dodging goats, cows, dogs, etc. When other riders or motorists want to join the flow of traffic in India they merely do so without looking, people walk onto the road without looking and it is our job to be aware and avoid them. It makes for interesting maneuvers at times. Traffic in Myanmar is much more orderly thankfully. We have also had to contend with many types of traffic "control"

methods. These have included rusty 205 litre drums placed on the roadway, metal frames, barrier gates all with the idea that you have to zig zag your way through and many times this means there is only room for traffic in one direction. This is all leading somewhere so keep reading! A few days ago when riding the last few kilometres of the day into Bagan there was a pair of such boom gates. These are akin to our railway boom gates but much smaller with no warning that you are approaching a barrier. Some are bamboo, others metal or timber. Now I do not know to this point if it was sunglare, lack of attention, tiredness or distraction but at 80 kph or thereabouts I saw the boom gate at the last moment, tried to get around and did not quite make it. I should explain that the boom was down on both sides of the road and that motorcyclists are not expected to stop but to zig or zag their way through. Well I must have zagged when I should have zigged as the end of the boom caught me at around waist height resulting in the bike going this way and Ray going that way! A rather speedy roll along the roadway and I was soon being hovered over by Scott and Don who were somewhat amazed that I was generally ok. At the start of this ride I fitted crash bars to my bike in Kathmandu and that 25 dollars spent has proven to be a great investment indeed. The body armour in my jacket, my Kevlar jeans, gloves, boots, helmet all served to protect me admirably and without the quality of gear that I ride in I would not have got off so lightly. Don committed to change from a leather jacket to a full body armour jacket in future when he witnessed this. In more that 40 years of riding I have never had a serious "get off" but it happened and I give thanks for coming out of it safely. The incident in Patna with the tractor was a slow speed event and pales into insignificance by comparison. Scott picked up my bike and amazingly it had a broken headlight and no other damage. Again the result of fitting the crash bars or leg bars as called locally. Rather proud of myself for making that purchase!

Now, I do not want to receive emails etc asking if I am ok as I obviously am or you would not be reading this. Sure I have bruising the size of a football field but that will soon go and I obviously bounce well. Ok, so I have had a bit of a rough time but I enjoy motorcycling so onwards I go. What can you do, did I hear you ask? You can make all of this count by helping my fund raising efforts. If you have not already do so please consider a generous donation at www.milesforsmiles.org.au and get your friends, business associates, relatives etc. to get behind the fund raising and make my falls count for something by providing funds to allow Interplast to do even more great work. The need is significant so please help. This event was not reported on earlier as I placed an embargo on such reporting until had spoken with my lovely wife.

Hopefully we won’t be seeing anymore of this sort of silly motorcycling attire.

Will these people never learn?! Mind you, that’s a lovely example of a post-‘72 model Yamaha XS650.

Mick Jagger photographed on a 1971 Honda CB350 in the south of France while exiled there. The Rolling Stones owed a good deal in taxes in Britain and decided to leg it in the (northern) spring of 1971 before their remaining assets were seized. They set up a recording studio in the basement of Keith’s rented villa in Nellcôte, in Villefranche-sur-Mer, near Nice and recorded an album called ‘Exile on Main St.’. The album was re-released in 1994 and then re-mastered and re-released again in 2010. Without being influenced in any way by Mr. Jagger I purchased my CB350 in September 1971 from Max Halton’s Honda dealership in Barkly Street Footscray. They weren’t sold here with the low bars and I had to convert mine with a set of Triumph handle-bars.

SIXTY YEARS SIXTY YEARS SIXTY YEARS SIXTY YEARS AGO …AGO …AGO …AGO …

With the MotoGP season about to commence on 23 March at Qatar this small piece of motorcycle history may be of interest. "My childhood dream was to be a motorsport World Champion with a machine built by myself. However, before this dream could be achieved, it was obvious that a stable enterprise with the finest precision equipment, and an excellent level of in-house design was

needed. These three requirements prompted me to market a utility machine to give us the necessary foundation on which to build, and it's ironic that the time spent on this side of the business has kept me away from racing. From results witnessed at the San Paulo races, and looking calmly at what is happening in other areas of the globe, we now know what is needed to compete with the Western world. Progress has been rapid, it has to be said, but I am still convinced that by following my long-standing concepts, we can win on the tracks, and I will not rest until we do. Everything is in place, and the time has come to challenge the West. I hereby avow my definite intention to participate in the TT races, and I proclaim with my fellow employees that I will pour in all of my energy and creative powers to win." This is a shortened version of the message Soichiro Honda, then President of Honda, sent out to his workers on 20 March 1954. At that time, a victory in the World GP series was unimaginable but he had set himself this target, and by issuing the written declaration, allowed his enthusiastic staff to become part of his long-held dream. It would be another five years before Honda motorcycles appeared on a Grand Prix grid. Four Hondas lined up for the 125cc Lightweight class at the Isle of Man. They finished 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th. From 1960 Honda competed in the 125cc and 250cc classes and by 1966 Honda fielded motorcycles in the 50, 125, 250, 350 and 500cc classes. Incredibly Honda claimed the World Championship title in each class that year. http://world.honda.com/MotoGP/history/

Club MeetingClub MeetingClub MeetingClub Meeting Show and TellShow and TellShow and TellShow and Tell

One of the interesting parts of our monthly meeting is Show and Tell which gives our members a chance to drag something out of the shed and amaze the rest of us Most of the time Show and Tell is about complete bikes but it

could be about bits of bikes, something specifically motorcycling or something non motorcycling but still of interest to our members. Feb’s Show and Tell was Ray’s 1952 500cc BMW R51/3. It started first go!!! Apparently starting these has “a lot to do with how you tickle the carbies”. The bike has a 6 volt system and a 4 speed box. Clutch is a single plate, which makes it hard to find neutral when the engine is hot…so the clever Germans included a second lever…which takes you to neutral regardless of what gear you were in!! If anyone has a bike they would like to bring to Show and tell this year let Ian Lihou know and he will put you on the roster.
