WMC WOMEN’S PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION 2013

The Women and Media Collective (WMC) was initiated in 1984 by a group of Sri Lankan feminists interested in exploring conceptual and practical issues of concern to women in Sri Lanka.

We are once again organizing a photography exhibition by women photographers, following the positive response generated by previous exhibitions.

It is a unique event where the work of women engaging in what is still a mainly male dominated profession in Sri Lanka, is exhibited. Through this endeavor WMC will be providing the women photographers, both amateur and professional, a space to display their creative skills to a wider audience.

The exhibition will be part of a series of events organized to celebrate International Women’s Day, and will be held at the Lionel Wendt Gallery in Colombo from the 15th – 17th March 2013.

We would like to extend a warm invitation to all Sri Lankan women photographers and photo-enthusiasts to submit their creative work for our forthcoming exhibition. An independent expert panel will select the photos to be exhibited and photos to be awarded certificates of merit.

We hope that this exhibition will draw in the best of Sri Lankan women photographers. Additional information, criteria for eligibility, rules, terms and conditions are mentioned below.

We wish you all the very best and hope to hear a favorable response from you soon.

Thanking you,

Dr. Sepali Kottegoda

Executive Director

Our work has contributed at different moments in time to social and political change, the inclusion of women and gender concerns in the peace process, increased state recognition of women’s rights, the enactment of new legislation or legislative and policy reform promoting and protecting women’s rights such as the Domestic Violence Act of 2005, and recognition for the need to increase women’s representation in politics.

The mandate of the Women and Media Collective is to:

1. Lobby for the recognition of women’s rights and concerns in legal and policy reform2. Increase representation of women in politics3.Create a space for positive representation of women’s concerns in the media
