April WLA Chapter Meeting

The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on April 8th at Fuddruckers with twenty WLA members and four guests attending.

The program was about hummingbirds by Denise and Eric Patten (left) of Wild Birds Unlimited, Spartanburg. The species of hummingbirds found in our area is the ruby- throated hummingbird, although Western species have been spotted on occasion in the Carolinas. Most ruby-throated hummingbirds migrate from southern Mexico and northern Panama, typically beginning to arrive in the Upstate in March and leave our area by October. Unbelievable as it may sound, some do winter here. Denise recommends that only cane sugar and water at a ratio of 1:4 should be used in hummingbird feeders. During winter months, the ratio should be 1:3. Clean the feeder every 2-3 days to reduce the risk of fungus infection due to Candida albicans.

May WLA Chapter Meeting

The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on May 13th at Lost Acres with twenty-three WLA members, one pioneer and three guests attending.

The program was by Vondra Hendrix, Senior Paramedic 3 with Spartanburg EMS (see left), about their services and recommen- dations. EMS has 350 employees and 26 trucks, five of which are chase trucks for fast response. Trained paramedics are on all EMS trucks. Spartanburg EMS responds to 55,000 calls annually, but the number of calls is increasing. If you call EMS, they are obligated to transport you to a hospital except if it is a diabetic shock case where the patient recovers and can be supervised for 24 hours. Important considerations are to carry a copy of the completed Universal Medication Form and attach one in a Ziploc bag to your refrigerator. A PDF version of the form where you can type in the information is at www.spartanburgent.com/docs/Universal_Medication_Form.pdf. You should also inform your local fire department as to the location of your hidden house key or provide them with your house door keypad code. Spartanburg Community College offers EMT and Paramedic Training Programs.

August WLA Chapter Meeting

The WLA Upstate Chapter Meeting was held on August 12th at Lost Acres with 20 WLA members and one guest attending. Thanks to everyone who brought a side dish or dessert. The program was about Haygood Mill History and Current Operation by Reed Severance (see left). He and his son Ethan are Certified Millers. They operate the gristmill on the third Saturday of each month and sell the various grist products produced at the mill. Reed also repairs the mill with period tools. Interesting phrases originating from mill operation include “Nose to the grindstone,” – millers smell the grindstones to check for burning; “Waiting your turn;” and “Show me your metal.” In addition to grinding, the mill features monthly events, an Indian petroglyph museum, blacksmith shop, cotton gin, moonshine still and nature trail.
