INTRODUCTION The method that I used to teach symbolism is

integrated using a variety of scaffolding instructions. Ensuring that students read, write and think is crucial to students since we want to teach them to become effective readers, critical thinkers and problem solvers. Hence there is need for multimodal resources. Fisher, D., & Frey, N. (2012a) felt that vocabulary instruction plays an integral part in understanding of meaning. Once our students understand the meaning of words and how they work reading and comprehension becomes less challenging to them. Also we must underscore the need to teach vocabulary as an integrated approach along the content areas because this helps with reinforcement and students are able to make connections to other disciplines. Fisher, D., & Frey, N. (2012a) denounced teaching in isolation.

COMMON CORE STANDARD Students will recognize and interpret

symbols used in content areas by using inferences and drawing conclusion.

Students will determine the use symbols in poetry.

INTRODUCTION Teacher will present a

poppy to each student. Then, she ask students to examine it closely for identification.

Teacher will ask the following questions: What is a poppy? What does it represent: Is it the real flower? What is it? Examine each part and tell what you think each stands for.

METHOD Lesson starts with whole class as a large group.

Teacher introduces topic by brainstorming and questioning students about poppy.

Students will work in small groups to tier the word symbolism and discuss usage.

Students will continue working in small groups to complete the advance organizer.

Each group will be given the opportunity to share work.

Teacher will conclude with a quiz and given follow up activity to create graphic organizers of five symbols in the home, school, church and community and state what each represents.
