“Without help from Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet, Melvin’s surgery would not be possible…” M elvin worked in a warehouse and ran a forklift until his right hip became so painful he had to go on disability. He lost 50 lbs., could barely get in and out of his basement apartment and “sat there looking at the four walls.” The condition seemed hopeless until a doctor at Truman Medical Center told Melvin he was a candidate for a new hip. The situation sounded familiar, as Melvin’s wife of 13 years, Stephanie, broke her right hip last year and, while waiting for a replacement, broke the left hip as well. Because of her double hip replacement in 2013, Melvin understood the urgency of his own situation. There was just one problem: Melvin’s surgery couldn’t be completed until he had extensive dental work on his neglected, infected teeth. During a visit to St. James Place, one of the Medicine Cabinet’s 23 intake sites, Melvin qualified for assistance with dental services. The necessary dental work is underway, and Melvin soon will be ready for his hip replacement surgery! He hopes for a full recovery and a return to working in the warehouse again. We will keep up with Melvin and his hip replacement through our Facebook posts (Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet) and on our new “News” tab on the www.KCMedicineCabinet.org Website! KANSAS CITY’S A Program of Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation Over the past several months, we’ve had many inquiries about how or if the new Affordable Care Act will impact Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet. Looking at statistics for the Medicine Cabinet at the end of June, the quick answer is that we are getting more requests for emergency medical assistance this year than last year and have distributed 20 percent more dollars than were spent last year at this time. As you know, the Medicine Cabinet provides for dental emergencies, diabetic supplies, durable medical equipment (including hearing aids), prescriptions and vision care. Since the program began nine years ago, the Medicine Cabinet has provided more than 20,000 services and spent in excess of $3.6 million providing them. Thousands of stories are behind all those services. Please read Melvin’s story in this issue to see how his dental emergency involved not only his teeth, but his daily life. Over the past several months, we’ve had many inquiries about how or if the new Affordable Care Act will impact Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet. Looking at statistics for

the Medicine Cabinet at the end of June, the quick answer is that we are getting more requests for emergency medical assistance this year than last year and have distributed 20 percent more dollars than were spent last year at this time.

As we look to the Fall, the Medicine Cabinet’s newest fund raising activity is scheduled for early November. Because You Care…H Ed received his seizure medication as he waits to be approved for disability payments. H Mr. Johnson had just been released from the hospital with a diagnosis of cancer. His scheduled treatments could not begin without several tooth extractions. The Medicine Cabinet was able to assist so that his cancer treatment was not delayed.

H Delroy was the victim of a violent crime. He was badly burned and spent six weeks in a coma. He lost several toes

and had sores on his healing feet. KCMC paid for special shoes that helped him to walk again.

H Aza was homeless, but now has transitioned into her own home with her twins. She is trying to learn computer skills so that she can do clerical work. Her old glasses were taped at the nose bridge. The Medicine Cabinet provided an eye exam and new glasses.

Thank you!

The Need Grows in Our Community In 2013 nearly 3,500 clients received more than 3,675 services. The total dollars spent for short-term medical assistance last year was just over $688, 000!

In the first six months of 2014, just under 1,900 services have been provided by Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet totaling in excess of $414,000. At this rate, 2014 will surpass the record-breaking numbers of last year.

In mid-May, 2014, Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet marked 20,000 services provided to the uninsured and underinsured of Greater Kansas City since the program began in July 2005.

A Word From Frank and Teresa…

CeO LuncheonsDo you know of a CEO who might be interested in hearing about the mission of Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet? Frank and Teresa are helping to spread the word in the business communities of KC by sitting down to lunch with small groups of CEO’s throughout the year. It is through community involvement that support will develop for our program! Call Becky Schaid, (816) 276-7555, if you are an interested CEO or have a contact to share.

Snow had a direct impact on the Kansas City Tip-Off concert for the first time in six years! A major

storm arrived on March 1st, prompting the rescheduling of the event to April 3rd. Two-time Country Music Duo of the Year winners, Thompson Square, arrived to lovely springtime weather and presented a rousing concert to 700 of their fans and KCMC supporters. Steve Holy, the opening act for the evening, and Thompson Square both made appearances at the VIP party held in the Valentine Room before the

concert. Sponsors and donors were treated to dinner from YaYa’s Euro Bistro, a lively jazz trio, a photo booth and an expanded silent auction with an assortment of sports memorabilia and unique items. A special thanks to 106.5 The Wolf for helping make the annual event a success.

The event raised just over $53,000, all going to support client services at the 23 intake sites of Kansas City’s Medicine Cabinet.

Plans are underway for the second annual Coins for the Cabinet collection drive to be held in early November. A list of participating schools is currently

being assembled. The new component of the 2014 coin collection will be the addition of businesses to this one week fund raiser. It’s a simple process, we supply the containers and you can develop a plan that works for your school or office. Some schools had the girls challenge the boys, others offered a jeans day if a certain goal was met. With the addition of local businesses, the Coins for the Cabinet campaign is sure to be another successful “fun-raiser”! Please call Becky Schaid if your business would be interested in participating.
