The syllabus explains this all pretty clearly. Have all of you read the syllabus yet? If not please do.

Is everyone clear about what APA formatting is? If not please look into the information contained on the Kaplan Writing Center site.

Our next slide is specific to the final project.

Some suggested topics … Women at work – Lowell Mills or the Triangle

Shirtwaist Company. Women in the military – The Women’s Army Corps. Mary Ritter Beard, Molly Pitcher, Dolly Madison,

Sally Hemmings, Immigrant Women, Native American Women such as Sacajawea, and Pocahontas.

Margaret Sanger and early efforts at birth control.Susan B. Antony and women’s suffrage and so

many more. These are just a few suggestions.

Your Final Project will be a research project on a topic of you own choosing. The topic should be based on the readings and discussions of this course.

Materials and readings assigned in this course may help you define a research question or topic, but may not be used as sources in the final project. The aim is to produce an intelligent and well-researched interpretation of women's history.

You must use at least three primary sources and three secondary sources. Encyclopedias (either print or online), including Wikipedia, are not acceptable secondary sources. Remember to express your own interpretation of your topic; your paper should not simply summarize the views of other authors but should put forth a creative reinterpretation of the facts supported with evidence from your sources.

When choosing your topic and while you are writing, remember that you need to focus on the philosophical, literary, and artistic contributions to the history of American women of the person, event, group of people, or theme that you have selected. It is not sufficient to simply describe the person’s accomplishments or to provide a list of occurrences, you must analyze their significance.

Your topic must be cleared by your instructor no later than the end of Unit 3.

This paper must be a minimum of 8 to 10 pages, including the bibliography. Use the APA form of citation for your paper.

The Final Project will be due no later than the last day of Unit 9.

Mary Ritter Beard (August 5, 1876, Indianapolis, Indiana – August 14, 1958) was an American historian and archivist, who played an important role in the women's suffrage movement and was a life-long advocate for social justice through educational and activist roles in both the labor and woman's rights movements. She wrote several books on women's role in history including On Understanding Women (1931), (Ed.) America Through Women's Eyes (1933) and Woman As Force In History: A Study in Traditions and Realities (1946). Source: Wikipedia.

Looking ahead to next week now … Your first graded written project is due for Unit

2. There is a written project that will be due about

the issue of freedom and early American women. You will complete a 1-2 page project on this question.

Remember to look at the sample project I have provided. No title page is required, but be sure to put your name on the project and follow standard APA formatting which requires page numbers.

For Unit 2 you will need to read - Chapters 1 and 2, "America in the World: To 1650" and "Colonial Worlds, 1607-1750" in Through Women's Eyes. You should read everything, including all primary source documents. Also, pay particular attention to the illustrations.
