Have you ever wondered what the Dead Sea Scrolls are and why there is so much controversy surrounding them? In this lecture, Professor Alex Jassen reveals what exactly they are, where they come from, when they were composed, why they have become scandalous, and what they really contribute to our understanding of the Bible, Judaism, and Christianity. Alex P. Jassen is Associate Professor of Early Judaism in the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota. His research and teaching concentrates on the Dead Sea Scrolls and ancient Judaism. He is a member of the international editorial team responsible for publication of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Dr. Jassen is the author of Mediating the Divine: Prophecy and Revelation in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Second Temple Judaism (Brill, 2007), winner of the 2009 John Templeton Award for Theological Promise, and Scripture and Law in the Dead Sea Scrolls and Ancient Judaism (forthcoming with Cambridge University Press). He served as academic advisor for The Dead Sea Scrolls: Words that Changed the World exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota.
