Alasdair Nichol, our auctioneer for the evening, is an international authority on paintings, a frequent appraiser on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow since 1998 and is Vice Chairman of Freeman’s, America’s oldest auction house. Mr. Nichol has lectured extensively in both the United States and in the United Kingdom at universities, art schools, societies and private clubs on a variety of subjects, ranging from the Art Market to the Pennsylvania Impressionists and Scottish Art. Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Alasdair originally trained as a painter in Aberdeen and then Belfast, where he graduated with a Master’s Degree in 1984.

Maureen McMullan, a native of Coatbridge, Scotland, is an award-winning professional singer, songwriter, arranger, and educator trained in both classical and contemporary voice. She currently serves as the Assistant Chair of the Voice Department at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, and as the Artist-in-Residence for The National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA. Maureen is also an Artist Fellow of the historic St. Botolph Club in Boston. Career highlights include: solo performances with Keith Lockhart and the Boston Pops, Holiday Pops, and Swing Pops, PBS’ Highland Heartbeat, Montreux Jazz Festival, Concord Pops Orchestra, The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, WGBH’s A Celtic Sojourn, Celtic Connections, and the Edinburgh Fringe. This April, Maureen will perform as the featured soloist in composer Howard Shore’s iconic work, The Lord of the Rings Symphony: Six Movements for Orchestra and Chorus, live to projection concert at Boston’s Symphony Hall, with the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. Maureen is recipient of both the Academy Award-winning actor Sir Sean Connery’s S.I.E.T. Arts Scholarship, and the Dewar Arts Award — set up by the Scottish Government’s first First Minister, the late Rt. Hon. Donald Dewar.

Fifteen percent of all profits, together with funds from additional fundraising activities, are donated directly to snow leopard conservation projects through the Snow Leopard Trust. The goal is to donate $1 million annually.

Ken Burns has been making documentary films for almost forty years. Since the Academy Award nominated Brooklyn Bridge in 1981, Ken has gone on to direct and produce some of the most acclaimed historical documentaries ever made, including The Civil War; Baseball; Jazz; The Statue of Liberty; Huey Long; Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery; Frank Lloyd Wright; Mark Twain; Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson; The War; The National Parks: America’s Best Idea; The Roosevelts: An Intimate History; Jackie Robinson; and, most recently, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War.

Future projects include films on the Vietnam War, the history of country music, Ernest Hemingway, Benjamin Franklin, Emancipation to Exodus, the history of Crime and Punishment in America, Leonardo da Vinci, Lyndon B. Johnson and Civil Rights, and the history of Innovation and Technology, among others.

Ken’s films have been honored with dozens of major awards, including fifteen Emmy Awards, two Grammy Awards and two Oscar nominations; and in September of 2008, at the News & Documentary Emmy Awards, Ken was honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

For more than a decade, Brenton Simons has led the New England Historic Genealogical Society — the founding genealogical organization in America and the most respected organization of its kind in the world — in unprecedented growth and to its pivotal role in the widespread popular interest in genealogy today.

An award-winning historian, Mr. Simons is the author of Boston Beheld: Antique Town and Country Views, Witches, Rakes, and Rogues: True Stories of Scam, Scandal, Murder, and Mayhem in Boston, 1630-1775 (recipient of the 2006 Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History), and The Langhornes of Langhorne Park. He is the co-editor with Peter Benes of The Art of Family: Genealogical Artifacts in New England. His articles have appeared in numerous journals and he was the founding editor of American Ancestors magazine.

In his residency, Cathcart Froden seeks to communicate the magic of the Trust’s collections through the medium of poetry featuring a new creation inspired by the collections at Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, which will be dedicated to you. You will also receive the original poem handwritten and framed. Experience the genius of the old bard himself, with a private tour of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum with the Museum Director, taking in the famous sites of the Old Kirk and the Brig o’Doon.
