Dear Reader,Wise King Solomon wrote: "Rejoice, youngman [or woman], in your youth, and let your heart

do you good in the days of your young manhood,

and walk in the ways of your heart and in the

things seen by your eyes." (Ecclesiastes 11:9)

When you are young, life can be so interesting andexciting, except if you are a Jehovah’s Witness. In

that case, a vast number of restraints and rules

steal the best time of your life.

Sadly, the new book Questions Young People

Ask –  Answers That Work (Volume 2) which wasreleased at the District Convention 2008 contains a

rather biased view on Biblical characters. It does

only mention those details that are in harmony with

Watchtower ideology; everything else is omitted.

This book will help you to realize the real mean-

ing of Biblical accounts. Did the Shulammite really

be that chaste? What do “the delicacies of the

[Babylonian] king” really stand for? Get your own

idea of Biblical role models, and choose a life

    course that makes you happy.

    ROLE MODEL

The ShulammiteThe Shulammite gave a fine example to Christian

women of today. She had a clear view regarding her ap-

pearance, her relationship with her boyfriend and her at-

    titude towards authority.

    Her Appearance

She paid much attention to her appearance. She

proudly said, “ A black girl I am, but comely.” (Song

of Solomon 1:5) According to Encyclopedia Wikipedia,

comeliness “can include various implications, such as

sexual attractiveness and physique.” So, the Shulammitedid not emphasize on “the secret person of the heart”

but on sexual attractiveness. That is why she declared:

“My breasts are like towers.” (Song of Solomon

8:10). Like a conspicuous tower that can be seen from

afar, the Shulammite dressed in a way that her feminine

charms could be seen from a distance.

Christian women of today should imitate her fine ex-

ample. Saucy dress, beautiful make-up and appropriate

jewelry should be used not only on special occasions but

    “always.” – Eph. 5:20.

    Selection Criteria

What did the Shulammite look for when choosing a

boyfriend? That can be seen from how she describes

him: “My dear one is dazzling and ruddy. … The

locks of his hair are date clusters. His black hair

is like the raven.” (Song of Solomon 5:10, 11).

Actually, she did not care about characteristics or in-

come. The decisive factor was solely the look.

We should always be aware of the fact that in comes

down to appearance. In ancient Israel, it was only re-

quired to bring the mandatory sacrifices; the attitude didnot matter. Likewise, characteristics only play a minor

role in a relationship. Rather, appearance, bodily charms

and appropriate dress are really important.

    Converging

The Shulammite’s boyfriend could tell her: “Yourtwo breasts are like two young ones.” (Song of

Solomon 4:5) And she said: “His abdomen is an

ivory plate covered with sapphires.” (Song of Sol-

omon 5:14) How should they know such details about

each other’s bodies if they only had met at “skating” or

“playing tennis”, as suggested by the book Your Youth –  Getting the Best out of It ?

The Bible tells us what happened one night: “’There

is the sound of my dear one knocking!’ – ‘Open to

me, O my sister, my girl companion!’” (Song of

Solomon 5:2) After she had let him in, the Shulammite

said, “I have put off my robe. How can I put it

back on?” (Song of Solomon 5:3) This way, the

prophecy that she uttered some time before was fulfilled:

“Between my breasts he will spend the night. …

His left hand is under my head; and his right hand

    – it embraces me.” – Song of Solomon 1:13; 2:6.It is remarkable that the two were not married at that

time. She already realized what the apostle Paul later

wrote: “[A Woman] is free to marry. … [But] she would

be happier to stay single.” (1 Cor. 7:39, 40, Contempo-

rary English Version) Jesus Disciples also noticed that “it

is not advisable to marry.” (Mat. 19:10) What excellentadvice for Christian couples today!

    Alcohol

Like all women living in a solid relationship, the Shu-

lammite was alone from time to time: “On my bed dur-

ing the nights I have sought the one whom my

soul has loved. I sought him, but I did not find

him. Let me rise up, please, and go round about

in the city; in the streets and in the public

squares … I found the one whom my soul has

loved. I grabbed hold of him.” (Song of Solomon

3:1-4) More than once she lay in her bed alone, while

her boyfriend strolled about “in the streets and in the

    public squares” with his buddies.

Generally, alcohol played an important role in the

lives of the Shulammite and her boyfriend. “He

brought me into the house of wine.” (Song of Sol-

omon 2:4) She even had an own vineyard. (Song of

Solomon 1:6) They both heeded the counsel that the

apostle Paul gave centuries later, to “not drink water …

but use … wine.” (1 Tim. 5:23) Without doubt, Christian

youths of today will follow their fine example by making

an extensive use of alcohol. If you live in a country

where it is allowed, you should regularly visit the local

    pubs.

    Consequences

Some may object when you follow the Shulammite’s

fine example. The elders even may threaten you with

spiritual death by disfellowshipping. However, “love isas strong as death is.” (Song of Solomon 8:6).

True love cannot be browbeaten by such threats. Love is

“the flame of Jah.” – Song of Solomon 8:6.

The Shulammite referred prophetically to the Watch-

tower publications, which are called “water of truth”,

when she said: “Many waters themselves are notable to extinguish love.” (Song of Solomon 8:7)

True, love is a gift from Jehovah. Do not hold back from

    following it, you young people!

Rather, imitate the Shulammite and her boyfriend,

who had neither a common Bible study or went into fieldservice! Instead, they enjoyed life, nature, wine and each

other. Is this not a fine example for young people today?

    ROLE MODEL

The Poor Widow Jesus sat in the temple and watched: “Now a poor

widow came.” (Mark 12:42) Modern-day Christians

can learn a lot from this woman. Probably, she had been

married by her parents, as was customary back then.

(Mat. 24:38) Nevertheless, when she became a Christian,

she realized that she had to accept Jesus as her master

and submit to “the law of the Christ.” (Gal. 6:2) But “a

married woman is bound by law to her husband”, ac-

cording to the apostle Paul. – Romans 7:2.Deliverance

How could this faithful servant of Jehovah free herself

from the ‘law of her husband’ and submit to Christ? She

observed the hint that Paul gave to her: “If her

husband dies, she is discharged from the law ofher husband.” (Romans 7:2) As his wife, she

surely could put this counsel into practice, e. g.

     when preparing meals.

She willingly accepted financial losses for the sake of

following Jesus. She knew her master’s sentence: “How

difficult a thing it will be for those with money to enter

into the kingdom of God!” (Mark 10:23) Therefore, she

readily accepted a life in poverty to secure one of the

front seats in God’s Kingdom for herself.

    Privileges

Christian women who follow her example today may

even be imprisoned. This way, they can imitate their

master, for he also “was in prison.” (Mat. 25:36) They

can view their jail time as a privilege, an assignment from

Jehovah who sent them there “to preach a release to the

captives.” (Luke 4:18) That is why there are many ac-

counts of people who “heard in jail about the works of

    the Christ.” – Mat. 11:2.

But not only married Christian women can learn from

the poor widow. Jesus also mentioned that other wor-

shippers dropped “money into the treasury chests

… out of their surplus.” (Mark 12:44) They re-

spected the widow’s decision to remain poor. Instead of

supporting her against her will, they rather dropped theirmoney into the temple.

We too should not use our time and means to support

poor or afflicted people. As a Christian woman said, suf-

fering is a necessity for servants of god; easing other’s

suffering would mean pulling them away from God andChrist. Hence, everyone who has some money should

imitate the Jews’ example and use their wealth for them-

selves, but not to support those in need of help.

    ROLE MODEL

Joseph Joseph set a fine example for young people who were

raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses by his parents. When he

was a child, “they took him and pitched him into

the waterpit” that illustrates the congregation, the place where “water of life” is supposedly served out. (Gen.

37:24)  As children of Jehovah’s Witnesses, you are not

to blame for spending your childhood and youth with

    the congregation.

    Childhood

Joseph did not keep himself from reporting his

brother’s failures; on one occasion “Joseph brought a

bad report about them to their father.” (Gen.

37:2) Likewise, Christian youths should be eager for re-

porting the failures of other Jehovah’s Witnesses to the

elders, so that these can ‘keep the flock clean.’

When Jacob was about 108 years of age, “he had a

long, striped shirtlike garment made” for Joseph.

(Gen. 37:3) We can easily imagine that this garment

did not meet the fashionable ideas of Joseph’s genera-

tion and that peers mocked him. Likewise, young Jeho-

vah’s Witnesses today are willing to wear garments that

were left over by old brothers and sisters when they died.

For the sake of the preaching work, they abandon a rea-

sonable vocation and sufficient income. Young sisters

willingly endure being mocked by their classmates when

they wear a dress from World War II at school.

    Strong self-confidence

For some reason, possibly through the “bad com-

pany” with peers, Joseph became rather self -confident.

“He went on to say to them: ‘Here we were bind-ing sheaves in the middle of the field when here

my sheaf got up and also stood erect and here

your sheaves proceeded to encircle and bow

down to my sheaf. … And here the sun and the

moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me.”

(Gen. 37:6, 7, 9).Thereby, Joseph gave a fine example to young peo-

ple who grow up as Jehovah’s Witnesses. When he was

a young man, his brothers noticed: “Joseph was not

in the waterpit.“ (Gen. 37:29) Like Joseph, many

young people leave the congregation that was symbol-

ized by the “waterpit.” They noticed that “there was no

water in it.” and that the so-called “water of life” only

leads to frustration and despair. – Gen. 37:24.

Once, the wife of Potiphar, his boss, tried to seduce

him and told him, “ Lie down with me.” (Gen. 39:7)

However, he refused to do that in her husband’s house,

his workplace. People today should also abstain from

cheating their partner in their own home. Sex in the of-

fice is not appropriate too; there are enough places

where you can meet without being disturbed.

    Joseph’s life course

How did Joseph earn his living? He interpreted

dreams and read omens. (Gen. 40:8; 44:5) Today, we

can perform such acts at fairs and folk festivals. That

way, we can squeeze money out of the many gullible

people that still exist in our day.

Finally, “Joseph went out … and toured about

in all the land of Egypt.” (Gen. 41:46)  And “in theBible, Egypt often symbolizes Satan’s world”, says the

book Isaiah’s Prophecy –  Light for All Mankind. Today’s

young people can imitate Joseph’s example by ‘touring

    about in all the

land’ or checking out everything that the

     world has to offer.

HezekiahHezekiah became king of Judah when he was 25

years old. His father, King Ahaz, was a faithful worship-

per of false Gods; he “kept sacrificing and making

sacrificial smoke on the high places and upon the

hills and under every luxuriant tree.” (  2 Kings16:4) Without doubt, he brought Hezekiah up ‘in the

discipline and mental-regulating of Baal’ and other dei-

    ties.

Nevertheless, Hezekiah abandoned his father’s reli-

gion. Under his rule, the Israelites “proceeded to

break up the sacred pillars and cut down the sa-

cred poles and pull down the high places and the

altars.” (  2 Chr. 31:1) What fine example did he set

for modern-day youths who are raised as Jehovah’s Wit-

nesses! They too should wholeheartedly turn away from

their parents’ false religion. – Rev. 18:4. As long as young people live with their parents who

are Jehovah’s Witnesses, they may have to follow certain

LydiaPaul and Silas went “outside the gate beside a river”

where a number of women “had assembled.” (Acts

16:13) These women, including Lydia, obviously paid

attention to cleanliness and body hygiene. Hence, they

were not content with the washing facilities in the city,

but took a bath in the river every Sabbath. Young people

today should imitate them by regularly taking a bath or a

shower, even if their parents do not attach importance tothat.

In addition, Lydia was very hospitable, as we read

about two prisoners: “They came out of the prison

and went to the home of Lydia.” (Acts 16:40) We

can imitate Lydia’s example when we take persons who

were disfellowshipped in or give them support.

However, there were limits to her hospitability because

she wanted to beware of bad associations. (1 Cor. 15:33)

Once, two elders wanted to make a shepherding visit to

her. She knew that the elders visit only “weak ones”; she

would not visit someone whom they view as faithful. That

is why she told them: “If you men have judg ed me to

be faithful to Jehovah, enter into my house.” (Acts

16:15) Let us imitate her fine example and never allow

the elders to enter our home.

    ROLE MODEL

PaulThe apostle Paul was “a son of Pharisees”, and the

    Pharisees foreshadowed Jehovah’s Witnesses.* (Acts

23:6) Hence, he is a model worth of imitation for to-

day’s youths raised as Jehovah’s Witnesses. Despite op-

position, he changed his religion; that even led to the sit-

uation that “they were seeking to kill him.”

    – Acts 21:31.

Jehovah’s Witnesses also would like to kill disassoci-

ated ones, but “the law of the land and God's law

through Christ forbid us to kill apostates, even though

they be members of our own flesh-and-blood family rela-

    tionship.” – The Watchtower , January 15, 1953, p. 63.

    Letters

Over time, Paul wrote a number of letters, explaining

his new opinion. They said about him: “His letters are

weighty and forceful.” (  2 Cor. 10:10) Young people

brought up as Jehovah’s Witnesses can imitate him by

writing letters to their former friends after they disassoci-

ate. They can explain their motives and report about

    their life of freedom.

Paul did not hold back from criticizing the Governing

Body of that time. He wrote, “When Cephas came to

Antioch, I resisted him face to face,

    because he

stood condemned.” (Gal. 2:11) Cephas – Peter –

had been given “the keys of the kingdom of the heav-ens” by Jesus, yet Paul criticized him in public. (Mat.

16:19) You young people, you too can uncover the mis-

takes of the “faithful and discreet slave” in your letters!

As Jehovah’s Witnesses, you probably never learned

to represent your own opinion but only the ideas that

were predefined in the Watchtower literature. But Paul

did represent his own ideas. At once occasion, he intro-

duced a teaching with the words: “ I say, yes, I, not

    the Lord.” – 1 Cor. 7:12.

    Visions and Journeys

Paul had “supernatural visions”, he “was caught

away as such to the third heaven” and did not re-

member “whether in the body or apart from thebody.” (  2 Cor. 13:1-3) If you live in a country where

the use of drugs is allowed, you can experience similar

    impressions.

Furthermore, Paul made extensive journeys in the

Mediterranean area; he was, among others, “in the city

    … in the wilderness … at sea.” (  2 Cor. 11:26) In

doing so, have gave a fine example to present-day

youths. As long as you have been Jehovah’s Witnesses,

you probably were not allowed to travel very much, be-

cause you believed that the whole world would be under

control of the Devil. But after you left the “truth”, youcan get to know the world!

    The Three

HebrewsThe three Hebrews Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah

were brought as captives to Babylon, along with Daniel.

It seems that they had a privileged position, so that they

received “a daily allowance from the delicacies of

the king.” (Dan. 1:5) However, Daniel decided “not

pollute himself with the delicacies of the king,”

and his friends did the same. (Dan. 1:8) The responsi-ble officer got into fear for his position and said: “ I am

in fear of my lord the king. … Why, then, should

he see your faces dejected-looking in comparison

with the children who are of the same age as

     yours?” – Dan. 1:10.

Present-day youths whose parents are Jehovah’s Wit-nesses can imitate their fine example. The “delicacies of

the king” stand for the “precious”, “valuable spiritual

food” distributed by the “faithful and discreet slave” who

appointed himself to representative of the “king” Jesus

Christ.* Back then, there was “a daily allowance”, and

today the “faithful and discreet slave” wants his followers

    “examining … [his] scriptures daily.”

If you suddenly refuse to pollute yourself with this

spiritual junk food, your parents will get “in fear” like the

Babylonian officer. They will be afraid of “your faces de-

jected-looking” when you leave “the happiest people on

the face of the earth.” (The Watchtower , February 15,1980, p. 8) Furthermore, they may be apprehensive of

critical questions by the elders and blame themselves for

    having failed at your education.

After a short period, it could be clearly seen that the

officer’s fears were unfounded. He “put them to the

test for ten days. And at the end of ten days their

countenances appeared better and fatter in flesh

than all the children who were eating the delica-

cies of the king.” (Dan. 1:14, 15) Likewise, your

parents will soon notice that your waiver of “spiritual

[Watchtower] food” did not make you a depressed, “de- jected-looking” deadbeat but a happy, successful and

life-affirming person. Even after few years, you will lead

a much more meaningful life than those continuing to

    study the Watchtower .

    ROLE MODEL

    David

According to the book Insight on the Scriptures, Da-

vid was “humble enough to acknowledge his mis-

takes” and “a lover of truth and righteousness.”

(vol. I, p. 585) This way, he gave a fine example to any

people who got involved with Jehovah’s Witnesses be-

cause of their personal circumstances. Every Jehovah’s

Witness should be “humble enough to acknowledge”

that his dedication and baptism were “mistakes”. Who-

ever is “a lover of truth and righteousness” will have no

other choice than leaving this untruthful association.

    David the Warrior

David was very skillful in handling his slingshot. (1

Sam. 17:40) He also had experience fighting with wildbeasts: “There came a lion, and also a bear. … And

I went out after it and struck it down.” ( 1 Sam.

17:34, 35) Today too it would be useful to learn martial

arts even at an early age. If you live in a country where

youths are allowed to own weapons, you also should

learn how to handle those. – Luke 22:36.

According to the book Isaiah’s Prophecy –  Light for

All Mankind, lions and bears illustrate “beastlike men.”

    (vol. 1, p. 164) Hence, following David’s example would

include being ready to kill humans if circumstances de-

    mand.

David did not fight alone. The Bible reports of “his

men, about six hundred men.” ( 1 Sam. 23:13) On

one occasion, “he and his men went and struckdown … two hundred men, and David came bring-

ing their foreskins.” ( 1 Sam. 18:27) True, it was ex-

actly like a reference work says: “Beginning as an out-

law, … he became the leader and organizer of other out-

laws” ( Encyclopaedia Britannica) The book David's Se-cret Demons by Baruch Halpern (p. 20) calls him “a

    bandit chief.”

Armed gangs and bandits do not exist everywhere to-

day. But if you live in a country where gangs are custom-

ary, like Japan or East Timor, you could aim for a career

as bandit chief, just like David. As an alternative, youcould consider a Mafia career; this organization does ex-

ist for nearly 200 years now despite heavy hostilities,

which shows that it must be have by God’s blessing.

    His Struggle

David the shepherd boy fought alone against Goliath,

the Philistine giant Goliath and hit him at the most vul-

nerable spot – the forehead. (1 Sam. 17:40-51) Simi-

larly, a small number of apostates today is fighting

against the intrigues of the Watchtower Society. Can wesupport them by courageously announcing the truth

    about the “truth”?

If elders come and try to convince us to return to the

fold of the Watchtower organization, we can reply ac-

cording to David: “You are coming to me with

Watchtower and with Awake! and with Reasoning

book, but I am coming to you with the name of

the truth, of common sense and of mind, which

you have ignored!” – compare 1 Sam. 17:45.

care of you. She can lie down beside you. … They

looked everywhere in Israel until they found a

very beautiful young woman named Abishag, who

lived in the town of Shunem. They brought her to David, and she took care of him [“served him”,

     ASB].” – 1 Kings 1:2-4, CEV.

In time, one woman was no more enough, and “Da-

vid went on taking more concubines and wives.”

(2 Sam. 5:13) Once, he fell in love with Abigail, but

she was still married to Nabal, a wealthy landowner.

“Immediately David said to his men: ‘Gird on

every one his sword!’”, and they went out to kill

Nabal. (1 Sam. 25:13) But Abigail came his way and

stopped him from doing so. Probably, she already antici-pated that Nabal would die after ten days anyway, or she

arranged it by herself. (1 Sam. 25:23, 38) As soon as

“David got to hear that Nabal had died … David

proceeded to send and propose to Abigail to take

her as his wife.” – 1 Sam. 25:39.

Some other time, he fell in love with Bathsheba, who

was married too. (2 Sam. 11:2) However, he could not

kill her man right away because he was fighting in war in

a distant city. (2 Sam. 11:6) But he knew, as Joseph did

century before, that a woman should not cheat her hus-

band in his own house, so he had Bathsheba brought

into his palace to “take her” there. –  2 Sam. 11:4.

Let us imitate David by not restricting ourselves to

one partner. The apostle Paul provided a similar counsel.

Though most translations render his words that a man

should love “his wives”; the Greek word γυναικα can alsomean “woman” according to Wiktionary. So, a man

should love ‘his women’ and a woman should love ‘her

men’. (Eph. 5:28; Tit. 2:4) Let us not hesitate to clear

someone who is blocking a relationship out of the way.

If someone dumps on us, we can imitate the lamb of

the Revelation: Though it actually has 144,000 partners,

they all together are called “his wife.” (Rev. 19:7) Like-

wise, today’s man could describe their group of partners

    as one ‘composite wife’.

On one occasion, obviously none of David’s wives

was handy, so he started to “walk about on the roof-

top of the king’s house” and “caught sight of a

woman bathing herself.” (  2 Sam. 11:2) Today, wedo not have to walk around on the rooftop; we can

watch women while bathing and in other situations every

time on TV or in the Internet.

    Appearance

David also put emphasis on his

    appearance. He wore a beard.

(1 Sam. 21:13) Also, he “cut

off the skirt of the sleeve-

    less coat.” ( 1 Sam. 24:4)

    So the garment that

    already was “sleeveless”

became even more open. Young people of our day

    can imitate David by wearing

    a full beard; women can

quasi “cut off” parts of their

    clothes by putting emphasis

    on transparent andlow-cut garments.

True, David left us a fine

    example in every respect.

Not for nothing, he is viewed

    as one of the greatest

    characters of ancient Israel.

David admitted that he made a mistake

    ROLE MODEL

     Asaph

In a prophetic preview, Asaph saw the life of a youth

of our day who was raised by Jehovah’s Witnesses. He

describes the thoughts and feelings of a young man afterhis leaving the so-called “truth”. Initially, he says: “My

feet had almost turned aside, my steps had nearly

been made to slip.” – Ps. 73:2.

He referred to the time when he was on the verge of

deciding for a life as Jehovah’s Witness. He had been

convinced that this organization practiced the “only true

religion.” He attended all meetings and said, “The very

ones keeping away from you will perish.” – Ps.

    37:27.

    Visiting Bethel

His mind changed suddenly when he visited Bethel,

which he thought was the “sanctuary of God.” He said,

“Until I proceeded to come into the grand sanctu-ary of God. I wanted to discern their future.

Surely on slippery ground is where you place

them. You have made them fall to ruins. O how

they have become an object of astonishment as in

a moment!” (Ps. 73:17-19) In Bethel, he realized thatthe Watchtower organization is standing “on slippery

ground”, as it is based on lies, false prophecies and half-

    truths.

He prayed to God: “Those showing hostility to

you have roared in the middle of your meeting place. They have set their own signs as the signs.”

(Ps. 74:4) Abruptly he figured out that the so-called

“sign of the last days” is a lie. “As in a moment”, the

Bethel was no more “the grand sanctuary of God” to

him but “an object of astonishment”. He already anticipated that anytime soon, only “ru-

ins” will remain of the Watchtower . He foresaw that to

the Watchtower Society “God will  have to say: ‘What

right do you have to enumerate my regulations,

and that you may bear my covenant in yourmouth?’” – Ps. 50:16.

    Insight

He said about his time as a Jehovah’s Witness: “I

was unreasoning and I could not know.” (Ps.

73:22) He realized that his activities for the WatchtowerSociety were “in vain.” (Ps. 73:13) Luckily, he was

still young and could do something with his life.*

You young people, do not wait until you are old!

Now is the time to leave the corrupt Watchtower organi-

zation and ‘get a firm hold on the real life!’ – 1 Tim.

    6:19.

In the “great sanctuary of God”, the young man

began to realize the truth about the “truth”
