Raising Godly Children in a Godless Society

Introduction A father once volunteered to coach second and third grade basketball at the local YMCA. For three Saturday mornings he worked with the kids on how to pass the ball up the court as a team. On the fourth Saturday they played their first game. It was a strug-gle to get the ball up the court, and the coach called out, “Pass the ball!” Billy got the ball, and Billy’s dad, standing on the sidelines, yelled, “Shoot, Billy, shoot!” The coach yells, “Pass!” Dad yells, “Shoot!” Who’s going to win? What’s poor Billy to do? Raising children as Christians can be very much like that. God’s Word encourages one thing. Society screams just the opposite. What’s a kid to do? What are Christian par-ents to do?

Scripture “The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare.

“Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

“So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him” (2 Peter 3:10-14).

“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of suffer-ings.

4

“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 5:8-11).

Study

1. We believe that the world is only temporary. But how might we send a confus-

ing message to our children in regard to this truth? (Consider future plans, fi-nancial goals, emphasis on what is important, etc.)

2. In what way are Peter’s words a cause for fear? A source of comfort? 3. How can Christian parents better teach their children to live “spotless, blame-

less” lives “at peace with” the Lord?

What do you think about this

picture and what it says?

4. Parents want to help their children recognize and resist the enemy. Who are Satan’s agents that have the potential to devour our children?

5. What is the key to resisting the devil’s attacks, and how can parents help their

children do this? 6. As our families suffer attacks on our faith, why is it important to remember that

other Christians “are undergoing the same kind of sufferings”?

7. How do the closing two verses become a comfort and a motivation in the battle

for our children?

Closing Prayer Dear Father in heaven, forgive us for living as if our world is permanent. Forgive us for crumbling too often under Satan’s attacks. Help us use your Word in our families and, by your power, crush the devil’s attacks on our faith. Keep our children safe in your care as we guide them in your truth, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

Note To Visitors We sing the Psalms! Before the service it might help to read through the instructions on page 63 of the hymnal.

Personal Prayers for Worship may be found on pages 10-11 of the hymnal.

If your child becomes restless, that’s okay....We love having children in worship at Zion. Feel free to step into the fellow-ship hall or to use the cry room near the west entry until your little one settles. There are speakers in both areas.

Restrooms are at the west end entry area also. Changing tables for babies are in each.

Holy Communion Holy Communion is celebrated on the first and the third Sun-days of each month (and the Mondays after). In the Lord’s Supper, our Savior offers unworthy sinners a personal pledge of forgiveness of sins through His body and blood. As He draws repentant sinners to himself, he also draws them into a special bond of fellowship with one another. In the WELS, we demon-strate this special fellowship bond in what is called “close com-munion.” Thus, if you have never communed with us before, we ask that you first speak with our pastor. He will share with you the steps toward establishing communion fellowship. Thank you for respecting our practice. Personal preparation help is found on page 156 in the hymnal.

Our Mission Statement

As a family of believers in Christ and members of His Kingdom, our congregation exists to worship, praise and honor the Triune God, share His pure Gospel message, encourage one another to grow stronger in faith through daily use of the Word, and urge each other to demonstrate such faith in daily living.
