Dear Customer, First off, on behalf of the staff at Michael and Young, we would like to wish you and your families a heartfelt Merry Christ-mas! 2020 is right around the corner and with it, hopefully a fish filled year! Thank you to each and every one of you whom has supported us. For the last 14 years we have held an annual Spey Day. This free event allows you, our customers, a chance to “try before you buy”; an opportunity to come out and play with most all of the new rods and lines in the SPEY world. It also allows you to watch world class demos on the various topics in the vast realm that is spey. For 2020 we are inviting our sales representa-tives to bring some of their new single hand rods, reels, and lines as well to give you all a chance to play with some of the amazing new sticks in today's fly-fishing market. Thank you to all that attended last year. With the help of generous dona-tions from our suppliers, we hold an annual fundraiser at this event. This past year we raised almost $8,000 with the pro-ceeds split between the BCFFF and the Steelhead Society of BC. Join us next year on Saturday April 4, 2020. If you are not already involved there is no time like now to find a Sportfishing and or environmental, non-profit organiza-tion to add your voice and support to. Some active organizations within our province include the BC Steelhead Society, Pa-cific Salmon Foundation, FRSA, Skeena Wild, Freshwater Alliance, Sport Fishing Institute, BC Federation of Fly Fishers and PacificWild. Wild. The future of our anadromous fish stocks is looking more and more bleak. Record lows around the province for salmon and steelhead and a catastrophic land slide into the upper Fraser at the peak of the sockeye and Chi-nook run this year has everyone worried about the future. There are many factors in play contributing to environmental and fish health. Some close to home, some in the middle of the ocean, some environmental, some political, and some plain human greed. It is difficult to think about and understand as there are so many conflicting parties and beliefs as to the ma-jor causes. What I see is that whatever steps we have taken, and are taking, are not working fast enough so we need to do something different. If you care for the fisheries in this province please join one of the groups that is trying to help. It would be awesome if we could bring a few of these groups together under a shared voice! Being in BC we are blessed with amazing Stillwater fisheries that are well managed and full of opportunity. 1000’s of lakes throughout the province are stocked for you and I to enjoy. A very mild fall has kept some of the interior lakes ice free and fishing quite well right into late November! Whether you enjoy chironomid fishing, stripping flies, or trolling you will find some quality fish and fishing throughout the province. We have our annual fly fishing Stillwater School June 12-15 at Cor-bett Lake Lodge (getting a little swanky this year). For the river fisherman—In all 8 of the provinces fish and wildlife regions there are many world class trout fisheries. Here are a few notables to help plan your nest adventure. The Elk, and Cowichan (Vancouver Island); Skagit (Lower Mainland); Thompson, Mahood, Clearwater, Canim (Thompson-Nicola); Elk and St. Maries (Kootenay), upper Dean, Blackwater, Horsefly and Chilko (Cariboo); Stellako (Skeena); Nation, Peace (Omineca/Peace); Similkameen (Okanagan). These may require a bit of effort to get to but are stunning places with incredible wild fish. For any of you looking to get away on a tropical fishing adventure Christmas Island has become an annual event for us, so if you ever want to put your name on the list, just call the shop and we will try to accommodate. At the time of writing we have room in February 2020 and are taking names for 2021 and 2022. We have a few young new faces hanging at our stores—come on in and say hi to Zach, Cam, Matt, and Todd. All part time employees and full time fishing nuts.
