From the Presidents....
Dear Shelters Family,
As we write, Israel has re-imposed a very strict lockdown, which will do even greater damage to the already suffering economy, whose medical services are strained, and further isolate the vulnerable populations.
We have therefore decided to continue our support of the Shelters for Israel Latet Aid for Life program for Holocaust survivors in Afula. The extent of our support will depend on your generosity, so please remember that many of the elderly survivors are even more alone and isolated now, facing food insecurity with many of their usual helpers on lockdown, and confronted with so many other challenges.
In this Reporter, we are introducing you to a new project that we have committed to for two years: Halasartan, or Stop Cancer.
This organization focuses on young people, age18-40s, who are recently diagnosed with cancer and/or still in treatment. Shelters for Israel will fund a coordinator for two years, to be attached to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa. You will learn more about the importance of this coordinator and program in this Reporter.
In this time of Covid-19 and lockdown, these young people are sometimes unable to start or maintain their treatment. Oftentimes they are living alone, sometimes dealing with care of very young children or fertility fears, and so many unique challenges to this age group.
‘Shelters’ is also about to present for your support a unique and important project in Northern Israel, a free-standing building attached to a hospital that is being built, with exceptional naming opportunities within this very needed cancer center. We plan to provide more specifics in the coming weeks and during our virtual event on November 15th.
The projects that we have described above and so much more that we do would not be possible without those who came before us.
Handa Stark z”l, who we lost earlier this month, was a pillar of the ‘Shelters’ community as Past President, organizer and hostess extraordinaire… always full of energy and with a smile. Handa and her husband Bandi were an indefatigable team. How lucky we are to have their examples and those of so many others to inspire us!
As we approach our 72nd anniversary, we will be together on Sunday November 15th at 11:30 AM thanks to Zoom, and we will still be able to share, appreciate, laugh and maybe cry about the stories of the people we have been able to help in Israel. We look forward to “seeing” you then.

Shelters for Israelmourns the passing of
Martha Weibel z”l
Past President of Shelters for Israel
Also known as Martha Weibel-Katz, Martha passed on July 25, 2020 at the age of
95, with her daughter, Irene, by her side. She was a Holocaust Survivor, born in the
small town of Chust in the Carpathian Mountains of what was then Czechoslovakia.
She lived in her family home with her mother, father, grandmother and eight siblings
until they were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp and entered into
Forced Labor. Martha and her two sisters, Rifka and Tova, were the only family
members to survive. She was liberated on April 14, 1945.
Her favorite activity by far was being in the presence of family. All the many children
in her life were sacred beings and received her unconditional love. Her family brought
her joy, always. For many years, Martha worked tirelessly for Shelters for Israel and
continued to stand as an Officer Emeritus.
“May her memory be for a blessing”

The community lost a very lovely woman who was a pillar of

But she was also a pillar for the Shaarei Tefilah Synagoguewhich she, her husband, and her family were longtime members.
We knew her as a person of commitment and strength. She fought strongly for what she knew was right.
When you encountered her, you were greeted by a smile and always with a sparkle in her eyes.

HUNGARIAN COMFORT FOOD RECIPE
Rakott Krumpli, Potato-Egg Casserole (Makes 1 8"× 8” casserole, 8 main dish servings)This potato casserole is traditionally Hungarian. Rakott Krumpli was traditionally served as a main course at the main meal of the day.
Fill a 6-quart pot halfway with water and 2 teaspoons of salt. Add whole potatoes. Add water to cover completely. Bring to a boil. Decrease heat to medium and cook, with lid ajar, until the potatoes are just cooked, but not overcooked, about 20 to 30 minutes. Test with a fork for doneness. Gently remove the potatoes and rinse in cold water until cool enough to handle. Peel the potatoes and slice into ¼” thick rounds.
Meanwhile in a large saute pan over medium heat, heat oil. Add onions and saute until golden, stirring, about 15 minutes. Reserve.
In a medium bowl, mix together the sour cream and the half and half until smooth and creamy. Reserve.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat the bottom and sides of an 8×8” or 2 quart casserole with butter. Place half the potatoes on the bottom. Layer half the onions. Next layer half the eggs and half the melted butter. Sprinkle with half the pepper, salt and paprika. Pour half of the sour cream mixture on top.
Repeat the layers, ending with the sour cream mixture. Sprinkle the top lightly with additional paprika. Bake, covered with aluminum foil sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, until casserole is golden and bubbling, about 45 minutes. Uncover and bake an additional 15 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving. Cut 2×4 for 8 servings.

SHELTERS FOR ISRAEL LATET AID FOR LIFE PROGRAM DURING THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS IN NORTHERN ISRAEL
How Latet Food Delivery looks in the time of Covid-19
Latet’s Assessment of the situation
As Israel is facing an exponential increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the government has taken drastic measures to isolate the spread of the outbreak. Restrictions on gatherings and quarantine, as well as a possible increase of prices and shortages of basic products, will directly impact isolated and impoverished elderly people, who are always on the front line in times of crisis.
Therefore, Latet has launched an emergency response to assist the most impoverished and isolated elderly, among them thousands of Holocaust survivors. According to Latet’s forecast, about 80,000 seniors in needabove the age of 75 will require vital assistance for at least 3 months.
We at Shelters for Israel believe it is our duty to continue to help these Holocaust survivors in this time of crisis in Israel. The extent of our continued support will depend on your generosity.

INTRODUCING A NEW CAPITAL PROJECT OPPORTUNITY FOR SHELTERS FOR ISRAEL
This important new cancer center, slated to open in 2022 in northern Israel, will require our support to complete their vision of exceptional treatment, research and wellness support with naming opportunities within many areas of the center.
We will be providing you with more information on this exciting, important and very needed project soon. More details will follow later this month and at the Virtual Event itself on November15th on Zoom.
This is a rare opportunity to make a significant contribution to components of a new capital project for Shelters for Israel that will make a huge difference to the quality of life of cancer patients in Northern Israel.

SHELTERS FOR ISRAEL WILL SPONSOR A COORDINATOR FOR TWO YEARS WITH
HALASARTAN/STOP CANCER TO PROVIDE IMPORTANT- ESPECIALLY DURING
COVID-19- SUPPORT FOR YOUNG CANCER PATIENTS AGES 18-45
Please read a recent feature article in the Jerusalem Post about Halasartan:
“Cancer support program for young people launches nationwide”By JERUSALEM POST STAFF AUGUST 10, 2020 (abridged)
For the first time, a national program was launched to treat and support young people with cancer in Israel. The program for young people with cancer being treated at Rambam's oncology department was established about a year ago in collaboration with Halasartan to help address the unique challenges during the period of illness and treatment and to provide a customized supportive system in various areas, while providing a response within the hospital and maintaining a treatment sequence tailored to young people.
In a meeting held at the oncology department at Rambam with the participation of representatives of the largest oncology institutes in Israel (Prof. Irit Ben-Aharon/Rambam, initiator and director of the program, Dr. Naama Halpern/Sheba, Dr. Sharon Peles/Ichilov, Dr. Hadar Goldwasser/Beilinson) and representatives of the Halasartan project of the Tal Center Association, the results of the program's activities for young people were presented in order to implement the program at the national level in all major hospitals.
The program at Rambam includes a coordinator-nurse for the young people who touches on a wide range of areas, including social aspects, emotional state, cognitive function, functional rehabilitation, relationships, sexuality and body image, fertility and menopause/ andropause. The program demonstrates extremely high satisfaction rates among patients, and continues to expand. As part of this, a young patients' council is held periodically, which contributes to the design of the program's activities in consultation with the patients themselves.
In addition, as a result of a survey conducted by members of the Halasartan community, the need arose to create a meeting between new patients and their friends who have recovered. For the first time, a recovery representative from the Halasartan community joined the program, whose role is to make available to the new patients the variety of digital tools that community members provide for the benefit of the patients' unique needs.
GIMMEL FOUNDATION UPDATE IN THE TIME OF COVID
Dear Shelters for Israel,
I hope you and your families are well and healthy. During these uncertain times, one certain thing is that Gimmel is needed. When Pesach came and unemployment was, and sadly still is, on the rise, Gimmel provided, with your help, food vouchers for the holidays.
Summer came and it was time for Gimmel camps to open, Gimmel was there! Always modifying its programs as government guidelines change every number of days. We learned from the summer camp to overnight change from physical programs to Zoom programs. Our amazing teachers saw that they can succeed in an insecure environment.
They really are incredible teachers, always working from the heart, you can see and feel it. After the holidays Gimmel will begin our flagship program, Gimmel's "After School Clubs".
Following government guidelines Gimmel will be able to open its programs using "learning capsules". Capsules are made of a group of up to 18 students that learn to-gether. They are not allowed to mingle with other students in different capsules. The idea is to create small social circles. This way if there is God-forbid a Covid-19 outbreak in a capsule the entire school doesn’t get infected.
Ending with a Shana Tova U'Mitukah!May we have a sweet new year full of health and happiness,
Eitan Kupietzky, DirectorGimmel Foundation, Kiryat Malachi, Israel
