things that you slightly change and then you just sit back and really enjoy it.”
The Whitby has 86 rooms and suites spread over 16 floors in a new building. No two rooms are alike, except that all have floor-to-ceiling windows – even the rooms on the lower floors seem to be flooded with light. “Even we are shocked at how light-filled the rooms are,” says Kemp. “So often you don’t know what a building will really be like inside because they are shrouded in tarpaulin during construction. It’s just amazing how much light we’ve got.”
The Whitby has something else that very few other New York City hotels have: many of the rooms have furnished outdoor terraces with spectacular views over the Midtown skyline. “I’ve always wanted to do a hotel with private terraces and here in New York, even though there are extremes of weather, it seemed like the perfect place to do it. It’s just so unusual to be able to step outside in a city hotel room.” On the top floor of the hotel is the 171sqm Whitby suite, which has two master bedrooms, a spacious living area, kitchen and two outdoor terraces on either side of the building.
For visitors to New York who can’t decide whether they want a Midtown or Downtown experience, Firmdale offers a unique service: a single check-in for both hotels. That means you can stay a few days at Crosby Street in SoHo and then follow it with a few days in midtown at the Whitby or vice versa. When the time comes to move, the hotel will pack your belongings, transfer them to the other hotel and unpack them again for you. At the end of your stay you will be presented with one account for both hotels. It’s two adventures in one city with a minimum of fuss. W

Peninsula, I thought they were all kind of geriatric. So I would move back to Crosby Street, but I think they need something artistic in Midtown.”
Kemp has designed all of Firmdale’s hotels in her signature eclectic and colourful style. “I always just say it is colourful and carefree,” when asked how she would describe her design aesthetic. “Within each design there is an enormous amount of detail, probably more detail than in most other hotels.” Kemp furnishes her hotels in a mix of new, custom-designed and restored antique pieces that she has collected in her travels. She is known for her use of luxurious upholstery, usually with fabrics she has designed herself, specially commissioned artworks and quirky, playful touches.
All of her signature design elements are on display at the Whitby Hotel, but, since this is Midtown, where property prices and retail rents are among the highest in the world, it’s all been ratcheted up a level. “Each hotel moves on a little bit, but it’s not about throwing the baby out with the bathwater – we are just evolving what we do each time. I think maybe the best way to think of the difference between here and Crosby Street is that the Whitby is just a bit more grown up, a bit more Midtown.”
When WISH meets Kemp she is busily putting the finishing touches on the hotel. “My favourite part in the process is this final tinkering, it really is,” she says. “Sometimes when you’re in the middle of a big project like this you can’t imagine the end of it and you think you’re going to go mad, but it’s this final bit that makes it all worthwhile. This is where you hand it over and then it belongs to the guests and the people that are running it, because they have their own [ideas] about how things will be done. And then you come back a few months later and think, did I do this? There will be

new watches
the bluesIWC’s Portugieser watch is one of the Schaffhausen-based watchmaker’s most popular models. The elegant and clean design of the dial with a slim bezel and narrow and tapered hands make it a style that is resistant to fashion trends. The Portugieser has been available with either a black or white dial but this year IWC has added blue dials into the mix. Pictured is the chronograph version of the watch, which has a stopwatch function with minutes and seconds. The stainless steel case is 40.9mm in diameter and comes with a black alligator strap. $10,900
on the railsPlenty of watchmakers make timepieces for
divers and aviators. Few, however, have decided to honour the unsung heroes who work on the railroads. In 1957
Omega recognised that magnetism was a problem for people working with electric locomotives so
it created the Railmaster watch, which could resist magnetic fields up to 1000
gauss. Its latest version goes even further and
can withstand fields up to 15,000 gauss. The 2017 Railmaster has a brushed matt finish on the steel dial and comes with a
vintage calf-leather strap. $6525
20 years of the oakThis year Audemars Piguet is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Royal Oak Chronograph with seven new versions of the watch in either stainless steel or pink gold. The design of the watch has been slightly tweaked in the latest iterations. The two-tone dials now have larger chronograph counters at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock and a new date window between 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock. The dial also has shorter but wider hour markers for easier legibility. Pictured is a pink gold version with a blue alligator strap, which is also available with a pink gold bracelet. $50,200
burning brightThis Arceau Tyger Tyger watch from Hermès is a one of a kind piece. Based on a 2015 silk scarf design by Alice Shirley for Hermès, the dial of the watch has been painstakingly produced in enamel using minature painting and cloisonné techniques. The base of the dial is white gold and the outline of the tiger has been created with tiny gold wires which mark off the surfaces to be enamelled in different colours. The watch case is 41mm in diameter and has an in-house Hermès movement. Price on application.
