In a building tucked in a corner of theBayer CropScience North American headquar-ters, high school students wander through6,000 square feet dedicated entirely to thespecialness of bees. Children taste differenttypes of honey and examine the differencesbetween honeybee and carpenter bee speci-mens.The pesticide maker highlights its work to fos-ter the insects around the world, welcomingschool-age children at the site built apart fromplant research labs and executive offices. Amidthe displays are bottles of Bayer pesticides. That display in that building captures Bayer's multi-billion-dollar balancing act. Some of those pesticides contain tobacco-derived chemicals calledneonicotinoids that many researchers say play a role in declining bee populations. Bayer spent$12 million last year, when it earned profits of more than $3.6 billion, promoting bee health asthe world's top neonic maker and No. 2 Syngenta fend off suggestions the chemicals are bee-killers.Both companies are fighting pressure from regulators in the U.S. and Europe with publicitycampaigns and lobbying aimed at telling people that neonics are beneficial and safe when usedcorrectly, and that bees face greater peril from parasites, pathogens and poor diets as wild flow-ering plants diminish. Bee die-offs could disrupt the human food chain, with a third of the foodsconsumed by Americans and Europeans dependent on pollinators like them. Researchers sus-pect neonic pesticides play some role in reported die-offs and the mysterious Colony CollapseDisorder. But they don't know how much. A comparison of more than three dozen pesticidesfound neonics produced by Bayer CropScience and Syngenta among the chemicals most toxicto bees, according to a September study by USDA researchers. Bayer, Syngenta and Monsanto— which coats its seeds with neonics — are encouraging nonprofits, landowners and govern-ments to plant more flowers and other plants bees need to feed. Their representatives are speak-ing at beekeepers' conferences and visiting agricultural research universities. Besides invitingvisitors to bee centers on its corporate campuses outside Raleigh, North Carolina, and Monheim,Germany, Bayer offers teachers a downloadable digital science lesson about bees. A companyTwitter feed promotes the benefits of neonics and studies that refute their link to bee deaths,often using the hashtag #FeedABee. Critics say that is all little more than propaganda akin to thecigarette industry's efforts to confound people by highlighting inconclusive science. The com-panies blame a parasitic mite as the biggest bee-killer. While the mite may be the greatest adver-sary of his honeybees, it doesn't explain why mite-free bumble bees are also disappearing.Neonics were a breakthrough because they can be used to coat seeds rather than sprayed overplants. As the plant sprouts, the chemical is incorporated into every part of it — from roots, tostalk, to the flowers that attract bees and butterflies.Becky Langer, the Bayer CropScience manager for U.S. bee health, denied the company's 4-year-old campaign is related to the company's neonic sales. It grew out of decades of research onthe interaction of chemicals and the crucial pollinators, she said.She said: "Bee numbers areactually not declining." But that depends how you count. On the one hand, figures from the U.N.Food and Agriculture Organization and the U.S. Department of Agriculture show there are morebee colonies now than 30 years ago. But those numbers can be deceiving since beekeepersroutinely separate a healthy hive into two, a practice that helps overcome accepted annual lossesof about 18 percent. Beekeeper Steve Hildebrand, who keeps about 20 hives outside Raleigh,annually divides healthy colonies to replace dead ones.It's harder to keep bees than it used tobe," he said. "It seems to get harder every year."Losses in the U.S. the past five years have been especially acute, with reported annual losses of30 percent to 45 percent, according to a study authored by researchers including the Universityof Maryland's Dennis vanEngelsdorp . The heavy death toll continues through the spring andsummer, when bee populations are collecting pollen and should be their healthiest, the studysaid. Across Europe and nearby countries like Algeria, beekeepers reported 17 percent of colo-nies lost last winter, twice that of the previous year.Meanwhile, Bayer and Syngenta are working on new bee-saving products. Syngenta is testingbiological and chemical agents to fight mites and parasites. Bayer is working on repellants tokeep bees away from pollinating plants until pesticides lose their killing power, remote sensorsfor monitoring hive health, and the latest in a 30-year series of mite-killing treatments.

CornellCooperative Extension and 4-H of Warren County invite allyouth to join them for a “4-H Adirondack Rendezvous”. Heldon Tuesday, December 29th, the day will be comprised of threefun filled workshops, free of charge and open to all. Come toone or come to them all! Battenkill Conservancy’s Save the WallProject Gets Underway with Boy Scout

Troop 127Great weather, enthusiastic boy scouts from Troop 127 andthe coordination of helpful neighbors and businesses resultedin uncovering the historic stone wall along Route 29 in MiddleFalls that has been mostly hidden due to brush overgrowth,lack of maintenance and more recently an abundance of fallenleaves.Thanks to adjoining property owners, Kelly & Eric Johnson,the scouts were able to access the invasive knotweed and grape-vines behind the wall. Withthe assistance of Millie andJohn Reiger of CountryPower Products, the scoutshad plenty of tools andwere kept safe along thebusy stretch of highwaywith vests, signs and conesthanks to Ian Miller and theNYS DOT’s Adopt a Highway Program. Pizza lunch and sea-sonal cider came in thanks to Spiros Tsitos of Greenwich Houseof Pizza and Nils Cederstrom of Whipple City Pizza makingthe morning a true community effort.Participating scouts, parents & volunteers included Chery,Charlie, D’Artagnan & Lucas Fearon, Steve & Joleen Meins,Joshua and Mathew Epstein, Timothy Banfield, Veronica andEvan Atwell, Melissa Bauer, Joseph Dziewolski, Chris andMathew Ginart, Charles & Conor Showalter, Lorraine MBallard and Cub Scout Lane Schultz and his mom.Removing the overgrowth and vegetation revealed where partsof the wall have collapsed onto the sidewalk area. BENEFICIAL MARTIAL ARTS PROGRAM OFFERED ATTHE COURTHOUSE: The Salem Courthouse CommunityCenter is pleased to offer a beneficial martial arts program severaldays a week. Under the direction of Sifu (Chinese for skilledperson or tutor) Steven Nacua, 3 distinct classes are offered. KungFu Tigers and Dragons targets children ages 5 to 11 and providesthe younger students with the traditional Chinese Kung Fufundamentals and discipline while having fun in a relaxedatmosphere. Kung Fu (White Crane Style) is available forindividuals ages 12 to adult. Students are taught this distinctmartial arts discipline including forms, self-defense and breathing/relaxation and test for sash advancement. The third class is TaiChi/ Chi Kung offered to adults. These beneficial exercisesdeveloped in China over 200 years ago help improve balance,reduce stress and create a feeling of well-being.The winter class session has been finalized and class sign-up isavailable.
