Halloween Safety TipsHalloween is one of the most exciting times of the year for children, but sometimes hectic for parents and guardians. In addition to worrying about costumes and cavities, parents must be conscious of where their children are and who they are with. Oregon State Police and NCMEC urges parents, guardians and children to remember that even though Halloween is a fun time, it is also one when we cannot forget about safety. This Halloween, take a moment to consider the following basic safety precautions to help make it a safe and fun night for our children. BEFORE HALLOWEEN: Plan a trick-or-treating route in familiar neighborhoods with well-lit streets; Make sure children know your cellphone number, their home telephone number, and address in case you get separated; Consider giving them a cellphone so they can reach you easily; Teach children how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency; Teach children to say “NO!” in a loud voice if someone tries to get them to go somewhere, accept anything other than a treat, or leave with them. Tell them to try everything they can to escape, including yelling, hitting, and kicking. ON HALLOWEEN: Make sure older children take friends and stay together while trick-or-treating; Never send younger children out alone - they should be with a parent, guardian, or another trusted adult; Always walk younger children to the door to receive treats; Don’t let children enter a home unless you are with them; Be sure children do not approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless you are with them. Halloween Cocktail ReceptionSpooks and Goblins are coming out for the October 30, 2013, Halloween Cocktail Reception benefiting TCF (The Center Foundation) high school sports medicine programs. FREE Skin Cancer Screenings Offered In NovemberAs part of a national campaign to encourage early detection and prevention of skin cancer, Deschutes County Health Services Department, St. Charles Cancer Center and local dermatologists are teaming up to offer free screenings Saturday, November 2 from 8:00am-noon.The free health screenings will be held at Deschutes County Health Services, 2577 NE Courtney Drive in Bend. Screenings are only available by appointment, please call 541-322-7499. The event is open to both insured and uninsured residents of Central Oregon. Central Oregon Dermatology: Mark Hall, MD.“Any exposure to UV rays, regardless of the time of year or weather conditions, is harmful and can contribute to the development of skin cancer,” said Dr. Joshua May of the Bend Dermatology Clinic.More than 3.5 million skin cancers—including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma—are diagnosed annually in the U.S. Crook and Deschutes counties had the first and second highest incidence rates of melanoma in the state for the time period 2006 to 2010, according to the National Cancer Institute.Other contributing factors can include elevation, abundant sunshine, outdoor recreation and tanning.“Every hour of every day someone dies of Melanoma but if caught early, this disease is over 90 percent curable. Screening and early treatment are very important,” said Deschutes County Health Services Nurse Practitioner Anne Kilty.The rate of new melanoma diagnoses—responsible for 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths—was 36 percent higher in Oregon than the national average from 2002 to 2006 and was the fourth highest in the U.S. An estimated 1,220 Oregonians were diagnosed with melanoma in 2009. Willie R. “Bill” Groom passed away peacefully at Cascade View in Bend on Saturday, October 19 at the age of 91.Bill was born on a farm in Stamford, Texas, in 1922. He was a U.S. Army veteran and later worked as a Sandblaster at the Naval Shipyard in San Diego. Bill married his love, Emajean “Jeannie” Groom in La Pine in 2001. He had a passion for visiting ghost towns across the country, and a love of animals. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie, in 2004, and also his sister, Sarah Zelpha Crawford.

Gail and Jim fell in love with the area when they visited here last year and decided that this is where they wanted to live.

“We feel there is great potential due to all the area has to offer,” Jim explained. “We want to have great customer service continue at our location, so that guests want to return to this area and stay with us, just like we did!”

By moving to this area and buying the RV Park, Jim and Gail can enjoy fishing, hunting, photography and the natural beauty of the La Pine area.

The two Montgomerys have some experience in business that will really help them here. “My wife Gail retired from the phone company after 34 years,” Jim told us. “And, I retired from my knife making business after 25 years.”

Jim and Gail are new La Pine Chamber Members and they have expressed a desire “to get involved with community programs that might need us.”

Currently, Jim and Gail are making plans while they adapt to the new home town they have chosen. “My wife and I hope to get our 18 space RV Park up and running by spring and we are including several improvements.”

Both of them believe that our community leaders will lead the way to help older as well as newer businesses to grow.

In terms of their own mission for doing business, the Montgomery’s Hidden Pines RV Park will continue to offer great customer service and the new owners are determined to offer visitors a safe and peaceful place to bring the family and they will do their best to help their customers to enjoy all that Central Oregon has to offer!

COCC Hosts Professional Leadership Workshop Central Oregon Community College’s Community Learning department is hosting a professional development leadership event, “Leading in Times of Change with Jerry Jellison,” from 8:00-11:30am on Friday, November 8, on the COCC Bend Campus.In this high-energy presentation, Dr. Jerry Jellison will provide practical knowledge and skills that can immediately be put into action. Because introducing new ideas and processes invariably creates resistance, managers need to learn simple behaviorial tools to circumvent this conflict.Jellison, professor of social psychology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for more than 30 years, is the director of the graduate program in applied psychology. He has taught his practical tools for circumventing resistance to business professionals at all levels of management worldwide for 30 years. His book, “Overcoming Resistance,” was a Fortune Book Club selection and was selected as a top business book of the year. “Managing the Dynamics of Change” was published by McGraw-Hill in 2006.The event will take place in Room 201 in the Campus Center.
