The Battle of Antietam began September
17, 1862. The Iron Brigade initiated battle
as they marched through a cornfield. The
Iron Brigade was made up of regiments
from Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan and
were known for their black hats.

In December 1944, a major German offensive is launched against the Allies in the Ardennes Moun-
tains region on the Western Front.
Because it was the middle of winter,
temperatures were frigid. Convert the
temperatures from Celsius to Fahren-
heit using the equation below.
The soldiers from Wisconsin’s 32nd Division were sent
to Buna, New Guinea in the South Pacific. Code-
breaking was important to intercept enemy infor-
