Wisconsin Harness Horse Association Spring 2015 I hope this newsletter finds everyone well! You will notice a large listing of horses in our In Training Report which is a great sign as we gear up for the 2015 racing season. For those who were not at the annual meeting, we have lost racing at Weyauwega this year. Unfor- tunately they have had a changing of the guards on their fairboard and they wish to try new things. Rest assure that Gary Magee is working hard to get it back in 2016. Please remember if you wish to con- tact their fairboard to let them know that you are disappointed in no racing, to do so in a polite manner. We are also down to 1 day of racing at the Elkhorn fair. This is a blow to us as it took some hard negotiating to keep this. Luckily I was able to get a couple big sponsorships from USTA President Phil Langley and nation- ally prominent trainer Tony Alagna to keep the purses up there for this event. It is essential that we have a good showing this year both in the stands and in the en- try box if we wish to continue racing there. Condition Books will follow shortly, and I encourage all the horsemen to flood the box. We moved the date to Saturday to ensure everyone has the opportunity to race at Elkhorn while still supporting Min- eral Point’s prosperous program. Our annual meeting was the biggest in 20 years! To top it off we had our best auc- tion ever! I was very pleased with the turn- out and moreover the discussion during the WHHA Business Meeting. It has been a long time since we had such great dis- cussion concerning the racing programs. I hope this can continue in years to come. In closing, I wanted to give a big shout out of congratulations to Dave Magee on his retirement from driving. There will never be a truer class act horseman and we all should send him well wishes as he embarks on a new career in the Judges Stand in Indiana. Perhaps someday we can get him up in our judge’s stand. See Ya At the Races! HANGING UP THE

LINES By: Tom Kelley

After 40 plus years of

climbing into the bike driv-

er Dave Magee has decided to call it

quits in order to pursue a new career as a

steward at Hoosier Park in Anderson, Indi-

ana.

The 61-year-old resident of Big Rock, IL

has been the Chicago circuits most suc-

cessful and respect-

ed reinsman throughout the last four dec-

ades winning 11,868 races and amassing

more than $101 million in purse earnings

throughout his career. Those numbers

earned Magee a spot in the Harness Rac-

ing Hall of Fame back in 2001.

“When I started out racing on the Wis-

consin fair circuit with my family I didn’t

even know those types of numbers even

existed,” said Magee. “I started out at the

bottom and just learned about

the business every step of the

way thanks to my family and

friends in the business. Everything I

have from all of this is honestly just

an unexpected reward.”

Always a mid-western boy at

heart Magee tried his hand on

the East coast early in his career

but quickly decided to return to

his roots.

“Probably 30 years ago or so I

figured I would give the tracks out

East a shot because that seemed

to be where all the big money

and all the great horses were at,”

explained Magee. “After just a

couple of weeks there I just didn’t

feel at home out there. That’s

when I realized I wanted to get

back my roots here and I’ve

been at it ever since.”

Taking down driving titles

at Balmoral Park, Maywood Park,

Hawthorne and the former Sports-

man’s Park and Quad City Downs

throughout the years the “king” of

the Illinois circuit was still able to

make a name for himself on the

national scene. He guided the

great Anniecrombie to a 1988

Breeders Crown championship

and also captured the 1984 Ca-

nadian Pacing Championship

with Mr. Dalrae, a horse Magee

would also guide to victory in the

US Pacing Championship. Other

top horses who Magee sat be-

hind for major stakes victories in-

cluded Odds Against, Keystone

Raider, Continental Victory, Stay-

ing Together and Color Me Best.

“I have been blessed through-

out my career to sit behind some

unbelievable horses and to drive

for some great trainers,” said the

always humble Magee. “Bob

McIntosh has given me many

great chances to drive World

Champions for him and to travel

across the country with them dur-

ing their careers.”

In typical Magee fashion

though it is a nondescript Illinois

bred who ranks at the top of his

list among his favorite horses.

“My favorite horse and maybe

the biggest thrill of my career

was driving MiT Model to victory

in the Filly Orange & Blue in 1982.

She was born right in our back-

yard and she didn’t have very

much natural ability,” he ex-

plained. “But she made up for all

that with a huge heart and she

wound up winning that race in

just her second lifetime start. I

never expected her to do that

heading into that race.”

Magee also put himself in the

spotlight on a global level when

he captured the 1995 World Driv-

ing Championship, knocking off

fellow competitors from Canada,

Australia, France, Sweden, Italy

and Germany among others. He

also led the country in wins in

1994, piloting 630 horses to victory

that season.

One stat that Magee is particu-

larly proud of shows just how con-

sistent and durable he has been

throughout the years. Heading

into the 2015 season Dave had

posted an amazing 36 straight

years with more than $1 million in

purse earnings and 38 straight

seasons with 100 wins or more.

“I guess that shows I’ve been

here a lot,” he chuckled. “Really

it’s been tougher on my wife

Kathy and our kids than it has

been on me. I’ve sacrificed go-

ing to events, parties, weddings

and that type of things on week-

ends but I always felt that I had

an obligation to be at the track

driving for the people that want-

ed me to drive their horses. As a

family we didn’t get to go on a

lot of vacations but we’ve made

the best of it by turning weeks like

at the State Fair in Springfield into

family trips. They’ve all been so

understanding about things like

that and I cannot thank them

enough.”

As Dave heads into his newest

career endeavor we wish him the

best of luck and know that he’ll

be great at it. And he’ll make it

look just as easy and effortless as

he did while guiding those 11,868

horses to the winner’s circle!

Magee will be honored in a

winner’s circle ceremony after

Saturday’s fifth race

at Balmoral Park.

Columbus, OH --- U.S. Trotting As-sociation Presi-dent Phil Langley announced Friday that Ellen Taylor,

Paul Fontaine, the Standardbred Owners Associa-tion of New York,

represented by President Joe Faral-do and Executive Director Alex

Dadoyan, and Yonkers Raceway, represented by Vice President and General Manager Robert Galterio,

Ellen Taylor is the executive di-rector for the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, a charitable organiza-tion dedicated to providing young people and their families education-

al opportunities with harness horses in order to foster the next genera-tion of participants and fans. The Foundation has been making a dif-ference in young people’s lives since 1976, and its programs in-

clude interactive learning experi-ences with these versatile animals,

scholarship programs, and creation and distribution of educational ma-

terials.

“One thing we all agree on is the

need to get young people involved in harness racing,” said Langley in announcing the awards. “No one is more active in this pursuit than El-len Taylor. Every summer she trav-

Wisconsin Harness Horse Association

Board of Director’s Meeting November 23, 2014

Howard Johnson Hotel Present: Gabe Wand, Susan

Schroeder, Patty Strand, Sara Weaver, Del Moldenhauer, Jay DeLong, Becky Swinehart, Jeanne Marquis

Hall of Fame Members: George Woodbridge, Bob Yohn, Wayne Moldenhauer

Absent: Nichole Glynn Board meeting began at 10:30

with a review of the minutes from the last meeting, October 11, 2014. Susan moved that they be approved as written. Del second-ed. All approved.

Treasurer’s Report. Sara re-ported that there were few changes in the account since Oc-tober. She had moved $2600 into checking to cover the starting gate repairs. Mike Titus was hap-py to get his $500. It was suggest-ed that she move some money from the checking into the smaller money market account as we should have few expenses until the Annual Meeting. Susan moved that we approve this report and Del seconded. All approved. See attached.

Annual Meeting Schedule of Events. Friday night

schedule will be the same as pre-vious year’s, with films of the summer’s racing and treats brought by attendees. Jay will bring panels and Hall of Fame collection to be set up that night. More panels will be needed as we have more to display. Saturday will begin with registration at 9:00 and a speaker yet to be found. Becky will approach a new vet at Elkhorn with some race track ex-perience and who seems to be up on current research. WHHA meeting will be from 12:30 to 2:30 followed by the USTA District 4-B meeting with Bob and USTA County Fair update with Jessica Schroeder. Tony Alagna, trainer of 2 time Horse of the Year Captain-treacherous, will be our speaker. Dinner will follow cocktails. Tony Alagna will address the dinner crowd for a few minutes as there will be some who were not able to hear him in the afternoon. A

streamlined awards ceremony will warm up the big spenders for the auction.

Awards: Susan has agreed to order the awards from Geiger’s and Mrs. Del will pick them up in Waukesha. Gabe has to study stats to see about Firsts, Season’s Leaders etc. Susan will prepare certificates. Service Awards will go to TJ Barnes, Sally and Russ Bar-rington, Dave and Tammy Hofack-er, and the Richland Center race day support crew. John DeLong has been nominated for the Laird Memorial for Excellence. Gabe has chosen Scott Douglas for Horseperson of the Year.

Auction. Becky will send out letters to regular contributors this week. Susan has 30 of Ellen Har-vey’s new book Old Standardbred Friends. We will use a few of these for the auction and sell some for $30, $20 for which will go back to Ellen. We need a large picture of Captaintreacherous. A harness from Extreme, Jac’s hop-ples, Sara’s surprise box, bike seat from Dennis Byrd’s son and wheels from Tony Alagna are all on our wish list. Gabe has another bronze statue from Big D’s and some promotional stuff from Scio-to Downs. Sara will talk to Mark Prevost about the Featherweight harness he has contributed in remembrance of his dad. He origi-nally wanted to raffle it off during the racing season but we have found it too difficult to do and seek an alternative option from Mark. We are all sent out to gath-er stuff.

Duties: Nichole will do the year end video presentation. Jay and Del will rev up the 50/50 ticket buying, Nichole, Sara, and Patty will clerk. Others will contribute in usual roles.

Calendar Raffle Gabe will check on having the calendar raffle ready for the meeting. Hopefully, by having them available, people will be willing to sell them during the spring.

After a careful tasting of turkey, pork, garlic mashed potatoes, and green beans, it was decided that the hotel would feed us satisfac-torily. Menu for the banquet was chosen accordingly.

Racing Race dates for 2015 are

in the process of formalizing. Rice Lake second meet will be July 31st. Westfield and Weyauwega will give us dates. Labor Day is Sept. 7th so we have an extra weekend in August. Morrison will be Aug 21st and 22nd. Viroqua may go to one day but we have no word yet. Elkhorn has had changes to the Fair Board which do not bode well for racing. Gabe will try to submit an offer to them which they could see as economically reasonable. Perhaps $7500 for us to put on races on Sunday, traditionally the best day for most bodies in the grandstand would tempt them. Friday would be the best day for horsemen but doesn’t get the crowd which we need to prove our value. They did no promotion of the races last year.

New Business. Del received one application for scholarship. Alisha Olson has helped with programs and Pick a Winner. She doesn’t know where she will go to school. Del will send us each her applica-tion and the guidelines.

Fair Board Convention will be held in the Dells the first weekend in January. We agreed that the exposure is important so Sara will set up on Sunday and be there on Tuesday. Jeanne will go on Mon-day.

Hall of Fame Meeting One Bad Hombre was nominat-

ed by Gabe because he was the best in the state in his time. Gabe presented details of his success. Mary Lou Wesnick nominated her father, Howard Koch, who trained and raced from the middle of the state in the middle of the 1900’s. George Woodbridge and Del Moldenhauer nominated Bob and Carol Yohn which prompted a discussion of our guidelines. After checking to see that a precedent had already been broken with other inductees, we decided to make a formal change in the guidelines. Del made a motion that the guidelines for the Immor-tal Category be changed from 5 years to 2 years, effective immedi-ately. Sara seconded. All ap-proved. We are charged to send our votes to Kerry Long this week.

At 1:30, Del made a motion that we adjourn. Becky seconded. We adjourned.
