often the quickest way to get around the town and parking is free and easy. • It’s free. • It keeps you fit whilst you get from A to B – regular cyclists are as fit as a person 10 years younger and have a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke. • To enjoy the open spaces and countryside around Wisbech. Cycling Tips • Ride assertively – cycle well out from the kerb so that you are visible to motorists. This will discourage them from overtaking too closely. • Be aware – watch out for car doors opening and make eye contact with drivers waiting to pull out. • Don’t overtake lorries or buses on the left at junctions as they have a blind spot and there could be fatal consequences. • Master the backward look – practice looking back over your right shoulder so you can turn right or overtake without wobbling. Dos and Don'ts • Be considerate to pedestrians – they should be given priority on shared paths, so slow down and use your bell. • Don’t cycle on the pavement unless there are blue signs indicating that they are designated cycle routes. • Use lights at night – reflective clothing is also a good idea. • Only use one-way streets in the permitted direction and obey traffic signs in general. Cycle Parking • Wisbech has plenty of cycle parking stands in and around the town centre, marked on the main map. • Sadly, cycle theft is common. Always lock are among the finest examples of Georgian streets in England. WisbechCycleMap

A guide to cycling around Wisbech

Why Cycle?• To save time – it’s often

the quickest way to get around the town and parking is free and easy.

• It’s free.

• It keeps you fit whilst you get from A to B – regular cyclists are as fit as a person 10 years younger and have a reduced risk of heart disease or stroke.

• To enjoy the open spaces and countryside around Wisbech.

Cycling Tips• Ride assertively – cycle

well out from the kerb so that you are visible to motorists. This will discourage them from overtaking too closely.

• Be aware – watch out for car doors opening and make eye contact with drivers waiting to pull out.

• Don’t overtake lorries or buses on the left at junctions as they have a blind spot and there could be fatal consequences.

• Master the backward look – practice looking back over your right shoulder so you can

turn right or overtake without wobbling.

Dos and Don'ts• Be considerate to

pedestrians – they should be given priority on shared paths, so slow down and use your bell.

• Don’t cycle on the pavement unless there are blue signs indicating that they are designated cycle routes.

• Use lights at night – reflective clothing is also a good idea.

• Only use one-way streets in the permitted direction and obey traffic signs in general.

Cycle Parking• Wisbech has plenty of

cycle parking stands in and around the town centre, marked on the main map.

• Sadly, cycle theft is common. Always lock

Wisbech, the capital of the Fens, is a market town of great character and historical importance. It is situated approximately 25 miles to the north-east of Peterborough.

Wisbech has a great deal to offer the visitor from its Georgian architecture to its church and museum. Its history dates back to Roman times and has connections to Hereward the Wake, the luckless King John, slavery abolitionist Thomas Clarkson and Octavia Hill, a founder of the National Trust and pioneer of social housing.

Wisbech landowners and merchants grew wealthy with the draining of the Fens and built rows of elegant houses along the banks of the River Nene. Facing each other across the water, North Brink and South Brink

Know your traffic signsWisbech Cycling

No Entry signs always apply to cyclists too ...

... unless there is an exception shown underneath (as at the north end of Corporation Road), or ...

... you can bypass No Entry signs if there is a gap alongside with this route for cyclists sign (for example to go north against the traffic flow along part of Orange Grove).

No cycling

Typically used on a footpath away from a road. You can still wheel your bike.

No motor vehicles

A cycle is not a motor vehicle. Cyclists are allowed to pass these signs where motorists cannot.

Shared route for cyclists and pedestrians together

The only time cyclists are allowed to ride on a pavement alongside a road is where you see this sign (for example, on parts of Norwich Road)...

... or this one indicating a segregated route, where you must keep to the side designated for cyclists (as for example on the path through Wisbech Park).

The Roman Sea BankLeverington (squares B3 & C3) access on foot only; cycles can be parked at the railings at the southern end

Thought to be originally Roman, the sea bank once ran right around The Wash. The land on one side of this remaining section is two metres higher than the other and is mostly made up from sea silt.
