What is a sensor?• In the broadest definition, a sensor is an
electronic device whose purpose is to detect events or changes in its environment, and then provide a corresponding output.
• Sensors are divided mainly in these groups:o Pressure Sensorso Ultrasonic Sensorso Humidity Sensorso Biosensorso Chemical Sensorso Motion Sensorso Acceleration Sensorso Displacement Sensors
Wireless Network of Sensors
• A wireless sensor network is quite simply a handsome number of wireless sensor nodes set in one or the other network format.
Architecture of Wireless Sensor Networks
• The 3 main WSN architectures are:
1. Star Architecture2. Mesh Architecture3. Hybrid Architecture
Usage of sensors in healthcare
• The main reasons why we should use WSN in healthcare are:
1) Portability and unobtrusiveness2) Ease of deployment & scalability
3) Real-time and always-on4) Reconfiguration
Real-World Prototypes• SLEEP SAFEMonitors baby’s sleeping position and alerts parents in order to avoid certain sleeping positions.
• BABY GLOVEMonitors body temperature, hydration and heart rate of infants.
ConclusionSophisticated, low-power, cheap, small, and mobile electronics will continue to permeate the home environment for a variety of applications, ranging from multi-media entertainment to home automation. It is a natural step to augment or extend these technologies to enable a seamless patient experience between home and the hospital or clinic. This must happen because of the cost above all reasons.
