The Canopy wireless broadband technology provides reliable, scalable and secure high speed internet accessand private network interconnection. Suitable for delivering data, voice and video to enterprises, governmentagencies, municipalities, schools etc, it is made up of several building blocks, consisting of Access Points (AP),Subscriber Modules (SM) and the Cluster Management Module (CMM).

Access Point (AP) is the central point for distributing traffic within thecoverage area. Up to six AP modules can be equipped in an APCluster, with each AP covering a 60 degree sector. Leveraging onthe Advantage platform, these AP operates at line rate of up to20Mbps. These AP are available in a broad range of frequencies (2.4,5.2, 5.4 and 5.7 GHz).

Subscriber Module (SM), the receiver at the end-user premise thatneeds connection to the AP. Each SM provides an Ethernet connectionto the subscriber's IP equipment such as PC, LAN router/switch orany IP-based devices. The range of the SM can be extended withthe addition of a reflector kit. Available in several versions, Lite andAdvantage, it provides data rates suitable for any applications. TheseSM are available in a broad range of frequencies (2.4, 5.2, 5.4 and5.7 GHz).

To achieve no interference among different AP and SM moduleswithin its network, Canopy employs precise transmissionsynchronization of all modules. The role of CMM, with its built-in GPSreceiver, is to provide such network synchronization for each APcluster.

CASE STUDY

CUSTOMERChina SATCOM Guomai Communications Co., Ltd. (Guomai) provides mobile digital wireless communicationservices in the Shanghai province. Its network uses Integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN) technologydeveloped by Motorola to provide clear high quality voice communications, while ensuring privacy and security.

THE OBJECTIVE AND CHALLENGEGuomai was in need of a solution in Shanghai that could backhaul E1 traffic from Xu Jing to Feng Xi, a distanceof 7.8km. Leased line connectivity was not only cost-prohibitive, but required a lead time for installation that wasunacceptable to Guomai Shanghai and its customer. Broadband wireless solutions were a consideration, but tallbuildings prevented a clear Line-of-Sight path, and products tested could not provide a reliable connection in theNon-Line-of-Sight environment. In addition, the adjacent Hong Qiao Shanghai Airport presented another challenge- high levels of RF interference that adversely affected data rates.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS� In excess of 10 Mbps throughput to carry multiple E1 connections.� Intuitive installation and management features for quick deployment.� Carrier-grade reliability.� Ability to operate in NLoS environments.� Interference mitigation feature.� Security.

DEPLOYMENT DETAILSIn a matter of hours, ROOTS Communications personnel together with Guomai field staff installed the MotorolaPTP 400 Series radio with integrated antenna and traffic was passing between the two end points. The Xu Jingsite radio was installed on a six foot mast atop a 7-storey building. This connected to the Feng Xi site radio whichwas installed on a tower mast atop a 4-storey factory, and was connected directly to Guomai's network. The 7.8kmwireless link path was obstructed by buildings.

Excessive interference combined with NLoS made this deployment particularly challenging. With the ShanghaiHong Qiao Airport in the vicinity from the installation, there were heavy periods of interference. Extreme challengescall for the use of Extreme Technology. Motorola combines all these proven Non-Line-of-Sight wirelesstechnologies in a single solution:� Multi-beam Space Time Coding.� Best-In-Class Radio (Receiver sensitivity - 96dBm).� OFDM (Orthogonal frequency Division Modulation) - 1024 sub-carries.� Automatic frequency Selection - iDFS.� Adaptive Modulation (BPSK to QAM).

To radically increase the chances of a successful connection, Motorola's PTP 400 Series radio transmits multiplede-correlated images on the date using multiple transmitters, antennas and receivers. It then recombines thesignals at the receiver using advanced algorithms. To prevent the signals from interfering with each other, it utilizesOFDM plus automatic frequency selection to choose whichever transmit frequency has the latest interference.Lastly, the adapted modulation rate and method are chosen automatically based on prevailing wireless conditions.

Because our customers demand highly availableconnections, we were very pleased to finally finda broadband wireless platform that can providereliable performance in high interference andhighly obstructed areas, we plan to roll out this

plaform in other cities as well.

THE RESULTSSince installation in September 2004, the7.8km link has been running error-freewith no interference supporting 2 x E1links, even adjacent to the airport. Thecustomer estimates the ROI to be 10months and has since installed additionalMotorola PTP platforms on its network tobackhaul E1 traffic.

CUSTOMERPokka Corporation (Singapore) Limited is a leading brand in theAsia Pacific with subsidiaries in Singapore and Hong Kong anda significant interest in a contract manufacturer in Malaysia. Thegroup's principal activities are the production and sales of beveragesprimarily under the Pokka trademark, and operating restaurants.

THE OBJECTIVE AND CHALLENGEPokka Corporation (Singapore) Ltd wanted to deploy an IPTelephony solution between the Singapore Corporate Office andthe Pokka Food Factory located about 1km apart. Leased lineconnectivity was not only cost-prohibitive, but required a leadtime for installation that was unacceptable to Pokka. Broadbandwireless solutions including FSO and wireless Ethernet bridgeswere a consideration; but the Non-Line-of-Sight nature of sitelocations made it extremely challenging for most solutions.

DEPLOYMENT DETAILSAn established Infocomm Network Solutions provider, NECSolutions Asia Pacific Pte Ltd looked to ROOTS Communicationsfor a suitable wireless solution. In less than two weeks, the teamsurveyed, proposed, installed and commissioned the wirelesssystem for Pokka. Although the sites were only 1km apart,obstruction from intermediate buildings and aluminum roof claddingmade the deployment exceptionally challenging. Drawing heavilyon the MIMO capability and best-in-class receiver sensitivity ofthe PTP 400 radios, the link was established in a matter of hours.Running at an achieved data rate of 17 Mbps while transmittingat only 1 W EIRP, the performance of the PTP 400 far exceededthe expectations of Pokka.
