SEPA EUROPE GmbH D-79108 FREIBURG Tel: +49(0)761/15610257 Fax: +49(0)761/1561027

SEPA® NEWS INFORMATION FOR SEPA® CUSTOMERS

QUALITY PAYS OFF! The advantages of SEPA® fans compared with the products of competitors result in the saving of costs when in use. Failures can be extremely expensive – as a general rule the following applies:

Moment of failure Costs of failure Effective fan price with n% failure 1% 0.1%

Failure during inspection of incoming material:

1 x fan price 101% 100%

Failure during final check of device: 10x fan price 110% 101% Failure when in customer’s application (Guarantee 24 months):

100x fan price 200% 110%

SEPA® fans were designed explicitly to provide outstanding reliability. Compromises that could be detrimental to quality were deliberately avoided. NKW was one of the first to build miniature fans long before renowned manufacturers followed suit. SEPA® fans are the consequence of decades of experience that other manufacturers have yet to catch up on. Differences that mean genuine quality are often perceptible in details and are difficult to detect. Only by exact observation can the decisive dissimilarities in parts be detected that appear to be similar when initial comparisons are made: HOUSING AND PROPELLER Virtually all renowned manufacturers use PBT with 15-30% fibreglass. Significant differences in stability (rigidity) are caused by different processing temperatures, the percentage of fibreglass and tools of not optimum design. SEPA® fans have virtually perfect plastic parts of PBT with 30% fibreglass. Problems: Poor dimensional accuracy, in particular the position of the rotor to the frame can cause the fan to become deformed when it is installed in the device. Test: Check the torsional rigidity of the fan frame by hand. Visually check the plastic parts. Conspicuous formation of burrs is a sign of processing problems. ROTOR CONSTRUCTION The fans are often subject to high dust pollution. A construction that makes it difficult for dust to pe-netrate is of major importance for the reliable operation of the fan. SEPA® fans are designed so that it is virtually impossible for particles of dust and water to reach the motor and penetrate the bearing system as the rotor shakes them off by centrifugal force. Problem: Rotors that are inadequately protected against dust with 3 through bores that point more or less accurately to the bearing facilitate the penetration of dust and water with the risk of early fai-lures or at least limited reliability. BALANCING Virtually no manufacturer balances the rotor of small fans as this is an expensive procedure. If it is balanced at all, this is done by applying weights or boring out. SEPA® fan rotors are balanced, if necessary, by boring out and additionally precisely balanced by using UV glue that can be dispensed precisely. Problems: Unbalance means bearing load (service life) and vibration (noise). Test: Vibration measurement via an acceleration sensor at a fan mounted on a rubber sheet or by visually checking the balancing characteristics on the inside of the rotor.

BEARING SYSTEM Despite extensive progress in sintered bearing technology, the cost-favourable use of sintered bearings remains limited to the less demanding consumption sector. Mixed bearing systems have not proved their worth in practice and are rarely used. Ball bearings from different manufacturers show great differences in quality. Fans with a width/thickness ratio of max. 4.5 : 1 should have 2 ball bearings in a metal flange. SEPA® fans only have NSK ball bearings, the market leader for top quality miniature ball bearings. There are also other Japanese/Asian manufacturers, however who supply fans in a wider range of tolerances and quality. A lubricant that is important for good quality (e.g. NS7) is used by all Japanese ball bearing manufacturers, whilst manufacturers in Taiwan or China often use grease of an unknown quality. Problems: Lower temperature range, less reliability and high sensitivity to dust with sintered bearings. 2 miniature ball bearings in a plastic flange can be subject to wear due to the non-parallel positioning of the rings. Test: Determine the start voltage. Increase the operating voltage of the fan slowly from 0 to the first slow rotation of the propeller. Allow the fan to run for a minute at nominal voltage and repeat the test. Visual check of the bearing system. PCB The PCB material can be on a phenol resin basis (FR2) or polyester basis (FR3, FR4). SEPA® fans always contain a PCB material that combines outstanding dimensional accuracy with excellent resistance to humidity. Problems: Poor PCB material can absorb humidity and thus alter the electrical parameters. If the PCBs are too thin, mechanical instability can easily result in mechanical or electrical problems. Test: Visually check PCB. ROTOR MAGNET The classical, cheap and adequate magnetic material is a tough rubber strip that is rolled into the rotor. In order to prevent it from falling out, the length of the strip must be somewhat bigger than the circumference of the metal ring in which the magnet is inserted. SEPA® fans contain a disk-shaped, extremely strong magnet of NdFe2, or where this is structurally advantageous, an anisotrop extruded plastic magnet. Problems: The „rubber magnet“ has high thickness tolerances (0.3mm!), that greatly alter the air gap of the motor and thus its characteristics. If the magnet is quite thin, insufficient magnetic flux can control the Hall IC that is responsible for commutation in the limiting temperature range. Un-symmetrical commutation is the result or even commutation failure. A small deformation at the lo-cation of the joint of the rubber magnet causes unbalance. Test: Check the commutation (even power pulse current without failure with resistor 2.2Ω at the oscilloscope) whilst the fan is subject to extreme temperatures of max. 100°C. Visually check rotor magnet. RELIABILITY and 100% BURN-IN The electrical reliability is determined amongst other things by the number of components in the fan (up to16!). The burn-in is performed by the competitors only at an extra charge. SEPA® fans contain only 8 high quality electrical components on the PCB. The burn-in is per-formed in conjunction with a three-stage final inspection of all fans. A reduction of otherwise un-avoidable early failures by approx. factor 10 is achieved. Problem: The current valid guarantee provisions in the EU stipulate 24 months for concealed de-fects. Furthermore, the reliability of a commercially used device is more important today than in earlier years. See also cost comparison on Page 1. Test: Collect failure statistics over min. 2 years. CERTIFICATES Virtually all competitors boast UL and CE certificates. The CE certification is not always fully justifi-able. SEPA® fans are certified by Phoenix EMC (appropriate authorities!). All insulation materials are approved by UL which can be proved, if necessary, by copying the „Yellow cards“. Problem: Unsatisfactory fulfilment of the interfering radiation standards can result in problems with the fan itself (HF spurious irradiation) or with the cooled electronics, in particular with HF receivers or computers with CPUs that have high pulse rates. Test: Operate the fan near to a portable radio receiver, observe all frequency bands (Attention: Only use a high-quality linear controlled power pack). Request CE certificate and Yellow-cards. Einfluss der Temperatur auf MTBF und Lebensdauer Influence of Temperature on MTBF and Service Life

The curves refer to continuous operation at nominal voltage and constant tempera-ture and are average values. With fans, the temperature of the conveyed air, is the reference temperature, with CPU cooler it is the temperature of the heat sink. The end of the service life is defined by exceeding the noise limit data or the reduction of the initial speed by ≥ 30%. Unfavourable environmental conditions, chemical or mechanical air contamination or heavy vibrations can have an unfa-vourable effect on service life.

HINWEIS • NOTE Die beiden Eckparameter, max. Both basic parameters, max. airflow rate and max. static pressure do not describe an axial fan fully as when used un-der normal conditions, neither pressure nor airflow rate are zero and the curve between both basic parameters is not linear. It is therefore, possible despite the same values for the measured airflow rate (exhaust) that considerable dif-ferences occur in the delivery rate. The cooling effect of the fan must be determined by testing or by computer simula-tion.

Einfluss der Luftfeuchtigkeit auf L10 und MTBF Influence of humidity on L10 and MTBF

SEPA® DC fans are equipped with protected ball bearings (Type ZZ) and electronics protected by a labyrinth against the direct effect of humidity so that its influence on service life and reliability is minimised. The standard information contained in the specifica-tions always refers to a mean humidity of 15-65% RH, uncritical test values to 15-75% RH. This information determines the environmental conditions defined for testing so that their influence is minimised as far as possible. The limit values permitted when in use are limited at the lower end by the increase of possible ESD inter-ference and at the top end by the development of drops of condensation. A fan installed in a device is normally completely insensitive to ESD interference. At the upper end, only the formation of condensation needs preventing. Due to the insignificant heating of the fan during operation, condensation cannot form even when humidity is almost 100%. As mentioned above, the permitted humidity range during operation can be defined at 10-98% RH, if there is no possibility of condensation forming. Conditions are different if the fan is taken from a cold to a warm room, e.g. when transporting devices from a non-heated storeroom to a heated room. Under cer-tain conditions, slight humidity may cause the forma-tion of condensation, however the drops will form mainly on the outside of the housing. The fan frame and housing are absolutely waterproof. A temporary formation of condensation that seldom occurs will not negatively affect the performance of the fan. Slow changes in temperature in the area of operation of the fan will not have an affect as long as the fan and surrounding air have approximately the same temperature. This also applies to high humidity of ap-prox. 98% RH, without formation of mist. If mist is formed continuously due to high humidity, this can reduce the service life of fans, in particular when the steam contains aggressive media (e.g. acids). This is also possible if the fan never runs or only seldom runs. Mechanical filters doe not provide additional protec-tion against excess humidity and the formation of mist.

This SEPA® high-tech miniature fan is suitable for industrial or automotive use and has a remarkable air flow performance despite its small height of 6.5mm only. Thanks to the extremely low power input 0.3 W, this fan is highly suitable for battery-operated devices. It is permanently protected electrically against re-verse polarity, blocking and thermal overloading. Due to the low rotor weight and precision balancing, it is virtually vibration-free. It is also insensitive to shock. Further features of this fan are its extremely robust and torsionally rigid plastic housing of PBT (UL E54695), ball bearing with narrow tolerances, of special steel, polyester-based PCB (UL E44247) and absolute reliability due to 100% burn-in. • ALARM SIGNAL (Optional) The SEPA® MFB30AxxA includes a pulse output, which allows monitoring the correct function of the fan. An alarm-board is available on request. The pulse is like a rectangular wave, the frequency correlates to 2 x rotor speed. The amplitude is 2-3 x operating voltage and peaks up to 9 x operating voltage appear periodically. Please use a series resistor and a Z-diode to block up the high voltage. At blocked rotor the output signal could be L (≤0.8V) or H (Vcc -1V). IMPORTANT: The pulse output is not protected against short circuit and must not connect to GND or Vcc without pre-resistor. A pull-up-resistor is not needed. Do not connect not used pulse output (insolate). Do not touch the rotor! The MFB30Axx(A) has tinned lead wire ends (without connector).

COOLING of HIGH-SPEED CPUs AUTOMOTIVE FAN

• FEATURES Small, extremely thin and light. The ball-bearing fan inte-grated in the heat sink is highly effective despite its height of only 7.5 mm! This renders it highly suitable for the Pen-tium 586 (K6) and for automotive use. • VERY LOW POWER CONSUMPTION An NdFe2O3 magnet ensures a high torque of the ball bearing fan motor and maximum conductance of heat and simultaneous low current consumption. • HIGHEST RELIABELITY AND LIFE EXPECTANCY The brushless motor is electronically commutated. A spe-cial IC is responsible for the electrical control. High reliabil-ity is achieved by 100% burn-in. • SILENT The air flow performance is increased and the noise reduced by computer-aided optimisation of the impeller and cooling surfaces. • ALARM-OUTPUT A speed impulse output enables simple monitoring of the fan speed.

• Mounting: The SEPA® HFB44BxxA is mounted on the CPU by simply using the double side adhesive thermo conductive foil THPAD44. THPAD contains an aluminium medium and bonds reliably and permanently even as high temperatures. THPAD44 is provided as a blank in the appropriate size (see accessories). The surface of the heat sink and the CPU must be clean and dry. Even mere traces of thermo conducting paste prevent reliable bonding. For more information please read the data sheet of adhesive pad or glue. IMPORTANT: Only hold the cooler at the outer edge and do not touch the impeller! • Accessories: THPAD44 thermally conductive adhesive pad, with aluminium carrier. WÄRMELEITENDE KLEBEFOLIE

DESCRIPTION THERMAPAD double-sided adhesive tapes pro-vide an effective thermal interface between elec-tronic component and heat sinks. The tape has high thermal conductivity and ex-ceptional bonding properties – eliminating the need for thermal grease and mechanical fasten-ers. THERMAPAD consists of high bond strength, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive, loaded with aluminum oxide particles and coated on 0.05mm aluminum foil carrier. The aluminum foil provides added thermal conductivity for applications where electrical isolation is not required. THERMAPAD conductive tapes are embossed with a unique pattern for maximum conformability and minimal air pockets. Extensive testing has shown that THERMAPAD system provides thermal and mechanical results superior to those of flat thermal tapes. THERMAPAD tapes offer excellent thermal, me-chanical, environmental and chemical properties. Vibration testing at 10G shows no adverse ef-fects. Unlike traditional acrylic pressure-sensitive tapes, after extended temperature/humidity aging and harsh conditions, THERMAPAD tapes meet or exceed initial properties for shear strength and thermal conductivity.

APPLICATIONS THERMAPAD thermal tapes bond heat sinks to hot components. They attach components to ver-tical heat sinks or metal chassis walls in place of clips, screws or other mechanical fasteners, and require no additional thermal compound. THERMAPAD tapes have many advantages over traditional adhesives such as hot melts or thermal epoxies. They can be consistently applied to meet design-level thermal and adhesive require-ments. The tapes can be removed after applica-tion, reducing repair and rework costs in both the manufacturing plant and the field. Unlike rigid adhesives, THERMAPAD thermal tapes are pliable and conformable, reducing con-cerns over CTE mismatch and the cracking or splitting of components or epoxy bond lines. THERMAPAD tapes offer advantages over me-chanical fasteners or liquid adhesives which may require a large capital investment. THERMAPAD thermal conductive adhesive tape is an ideal matter to fix heat sinks on hot compo-nent surfaces like CPU’s, power amplifiers, motor driver and Peltier coolers.

Apply to centre of heat sink bonding area and smooth over entire surface using moderate pres-sure. Remove blue embossed liner from the tape. Cen-tre heat sink component and apply using any one of the recommended temperature/pressure op-tions shown below:

Pressure Temperature Time 70 KPa 22 °C 15 sec 200 KPa 22 °C 5 sec 70 KPa 50 – 65 °C 5 sec 200 KPa 50 – 65 °C 3 sec

Approximately 70% of the ultimate adhesive bond strength his achieved with initial application and 80-90% is reached within 15 minutes. Ultimate adhesive strength is achieved within 36 hours; however, the next manufacturing step can occur immediately following the initial application. IMPORTANT: Only hold an active cooler at the outer edge and do not touch the impeller!
