The Waste Isolation Pilot Plantuses a continuous miner to carvedisposal rooms out of thePermian Salt Formation, nearly ahalf mile below the surface.

An underground dump truckempties its load at the SaltHandling Shaft for the 2,150-foottrip to the surface.
