The BC Road Builders proudly released its history book during the AGM and 50th Anniversary Celebrations in December. The book entitled, Fifty Years of Building BC – A Proud History of the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, highlights the storied history of the Association from how it first formed, to how it progressed into the great organization it is today.

It includes a lot of pictures of important people in the Association’s history along with the spectacular infrastructure projects our members have been involved in and we hope you enjoy it. The books are available for order through the Association’s website now.

The BC Road Builders also worked hard to produce a new Transportation Infrastructure in BC magazine which highlights the importance of continued investment in transportation infrastructure across BC. The magazine is being sent to all members, association part-ners, government representatives and MLAs. Thank you to all members who placed ads in this special publication.

Kelly Scott is new BC Road Builders' President as Jack Davidson retires

After 18 years as president with the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association, Jack Davidson retired in January. Jack was very effective in all aspects of the job, including: strategic planning, government relations, educational programs and conferences, media and public relations and WorkSafeBC liaison for the Association’s 265 member firms.

As voted upon by members at the 2016 Annual General Meeting, Jack and Marilyn were be-stowed Honourary Lifetime Memberships with the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association. A presentation was made during the Gala Dinner and Dance and Jack was also gifted a special painting that the board of directors had commissioned for him.

Kelly Scott has been appointed president after spending the last year as vice president. Kelly is well known to the industry in Western Canada. He has held senior leadership positions in the heavy equipment industry throughout Western Canada and the UK over the past 35 years.

BETTY SPALTON SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS ARE BEING ACCEPTED NOW

The Betty Spalton Scholarship Fund was established by the BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association in 1999 to provide financial support to individuals obtaining ed-ucations in fields associated with the road building and heavy construction industries. As one of the goals of this fund is to encourage diversity in the industry, preference is given to females and/or members of minority groups.

The fund honours Betty Spalton, an industry and Association leader who died after a brief illness in 1999. Betty began her career with BC's Ministry of Transportation and Highways. She later served as District Highways Manager in McBride and went on to become President and General Manager of the Okanagan South (Penticton) Division of Argo Road Maintenance. As an active member of the BC Road Builders’ board of directors, she headed the maintenance sector and was an acknowledged expert in maintenance policy, standards, business man-agement and construction in general. Betty’s outstanding contribution to the Association and the industry has been an inspiration to many in the industry.

The BC Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association is now accepting applications for 2017. Please encourage any of your employees, family or friends who may be eligible to find out more about the Betty Spalton Scholarship Program (information is on our website at www.roadbuilders.bc.ca/education_fund.php).

BC Road Builders’ 2017 Strategic Work Plan

The 2017 board of directors met in January to develop the Association’s strategic goals, priorities and government asks for this year. The two-day strategic planning retreat took place in downtown Vancouver bringing together staff and the board of directors, which has three new directors and one returning director (see Getting to Know You Profiles on page 6).

The board of directors did a current SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis for the Association and determined seven general goals incorporating strategies, action items and government asks. The board also developed committees to help work on each of the goals. Members are encour-aged to share ideas and let us know if you are interested in becoming involved.

The board of directors will be using this strategic work plan as the basis for meetings with all stakeholders including represen-tatives from the Premier’s Office, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, mu-nicipalities, BC Hydro, BC Construction Safety Alliance, Canadian Construction Association and others.

The 2017 Strategic Work Plan is available now and will be sent to all MLAs, MPs and municipalities this spring.

BC Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association

VISIONThe BC Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association is the recognized advocate for the development and maintenance of core infrastructure and a balanced, safe transportation system that promotes economic growth and a sustainable environment.

MISSIONWe communicate strong, clear industry positions and expectations to governments and stakeholders.

We promote awareness, innovative solutions and value for investment in core infrastructure.

We provide training, safety awareness, support, fellowship, ethical leadership and a strong voice for our members.

ABOUT USThe BC Road Builders & Heavy Construction Association was established in 1966 by twelve founding firms. In 1989, the maintenance sector joined the association’s construction and service and supply sectors in order to provide a single, unified voice for the industry. Since that time, the association has grown to include over 250 member companies representing over 10,000 workers including privatized highway maintenance contractors, construction contractors, underground/utility contractors, paving contractors and various service and suppliers.

The BC Road Builders is a non-profit organization that is registered under the Societies Act and is governed by its constitution and bylaws.

We pride ourselves in bringing the industry together to discuss issues, to find solutions to challenges, to maximize business opportunities and to celebrate our successes.

In British Columbia and indeed in all of Canada, the strength of our economy has always been tied to a strong transportation infrastructure program. In order to provide the excellent healthcare, education and other important social benefits that British Columbia and Canada are envied for, we must continue to have a strong and growing economy. Transportation has a significant impact on jobs, trade, quality of life and the overall economy.
