g R e y S t o n e b o o k S is now entering its fifth year as a new, independent

book publishing company after more than twenty-three years as an imprint

of a larger entity. The past four years have gone by quickly, and they have

been productive, exciting, and fun for all involved. Over these years, we have

published a number of important and successful books, and we have distrib-

uted them around the world in both paper and digital form. Our reach has

expanded, our interests have broadened, but our commitment to publishing

quality books has not changed.

Our Fall 2016 publishing program was remarkable in many ways, certainly

in part because of the tremendous response to Peter Wohlleben’s The Hidden

Life of Trees. That book, like our entire fall offering of books, performed well

in all the territories it was published. Greystone has gained strength over the

past four years, and we are confident about the future of our program, which

will continue to focus on our relationship with the natural world and the health

of all living things.

This catalogue features new books that address the subject of our own

health in a number of different ways, from advice on the foods we eat to life-

style tips on how to add happy years to our time on earth. And in a significant

work that explores the health of the planet, David Suzuki returns with a new

book co-authored with Ian Hanington. This book, Just Cool It!, presents a seri-

ous and significant post-Paris Agreement analysis of what it will take to ensure

our world remains a healthy home for all living things.

As our associate publisher, Nancy Flight, remarked recently, “all of our new

books have in common a firm grounding in science, a commitment to change,

and a belief that we all have it in us to make a difference.” These words are the

light which will help Greystone move forward into a future that we intend to

make as productive, exciting, and fun as the past four years have been.

in Signing the 2015 Paris Agreement, leaders from almost every nation acknowledged that human-caused climate change is a critical problem requiring urgent world-wide response. But although it offered hope, the Agreement was only the first step towards achieving the cleaner, brighter future we so desperately need. In Just Cool It!, Suzuki and Hanington implore us to take those next steps and create real, lasting change for the world. Drawing on new innovations such as smart grid power systems, biochar soil technologies, and algae-based biofuels, the authors outline practical, forward-thinking solutions to resolving the climate cri-sis. When enough people demand action, change starts happening—and this time, it could be monumental.

In Paris, we agreed to save our planet. Just Cool It! shows us how to do it.

gRowing uP in a household of food-loving Italian-Americans, Marissa Landrigan was always a black sheep—she barely knew how to boil water for pasta. But at college, she thought she’d discovered her purpose. Buoyed by animal rights activism and a feminist urge to avoid the kitchen, she transformed into a hardcore vegan activist, complete with shaved head.

But Landrigan still hadn’t found her place in the world. She criss-crossed the U.S., striving to develop her career and maintain a relationship. Along the way, she discovered that eating ethically was far from simple—and cutting out meat was not the answer. As she got closer to the source of her food, eventually even visiting a slaughterhouse and hunting elk, Landrigan realized that the most ethi-cal way of eating was to know her food—whether meat or vegetable—and prepare it herself, on her own terms, to eat with family and friends.

Part memoir and part investigative journalism, The Vegetarian’s Guide to Eat-ing Meat is as much a search for identity as it is a fascinating treatise on food.

MaRiSSa l andRigan’S essays have appeared in numerous publications, includ-ing the Atlantic, Salon, Guernica, and Orion, and she runs the food-themed reading series Acquired Taste. She holds an MFA from Iowa State University and is currently an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh–Johnstown, where she teaches creative, professional, and digital writing.

die t and lifeSt yle guides are all the rage, but they tend to be too prescrip-tive and difficult to follow. And most self-help books are too long. Who has time to read 300+ pages or the discipline for a total lifestyle change overnight? Cue The Nordic Guide to Living 10 Years Longer. With this pragmatic little book that channels the healthy lifestyle of Scandinavia, 10 easy tips will add 10 healthy years to your life.

Swedish doctor Bertil Marklund covers broad ground in this short book, pro-viding a comprehensive guide to lifestyle choices, many of which are inspired by Nordic ideals about engaging in vigorous outdoor recreation, foraging for food such as berries, and—important to those in Northern climes—getting enough sunlight. Other tips cover areas such as sleep and the negative impact of stress. We can all make some of the changes outlined in the book without completely rethinking the way we live. By providing pragmatic and realistic advice, Dr. Marklund gives you the power to make a difference in your own life—today, and for the future.

wa S it wild parties and rough sex, a blood transfusion after childbirth or after a horrific accident involving a group of bikers, or perhaps some other event during the freewheeling 1960s and early 1970s that funneled the demon into her blood? Regardless, decades later, on the verge of cirrhosis, Elizabeth Rains had to con-front the fact that she was infected with hepatitis C, often a death sentence. But Rains was lucky. She was able to obtain the new, tremendously costly lifesaving antivirals, and became one of the early patients to be cured. More detailed and more personal than the Cannings’ previous books, and illustrated with more than thirty color photographs of birds and locales, Best Places to Bird in British Columbia introduces some sites that will be familiar favorites for readers, while others may come as a surprise. Readers can choose their destination by species—each chapter has a list of “Specialty Birds,” the ornithological highlights of a trip to the area in question—or by geography—each chapter is named for its region and includes detailed information not only on how to get there but also on how to make the most of being there. at any MoMent, millions of women and men are seeking romantic relation-ships, while millions more are ending them. The problem, according to existential spiritual philosopher Gerald Sze, is that we misunderstand the spiritual purpose of True Romantic Love. Instead, we settle for what Sze calls “phantom romantic love”, which is conditional, transactional, and leads inevitably to disappoint-ment, loneliness and heartbreak. A soulmate, Sze says, is not someone who ticks all the boxes on our dating checklist, but a precious ally with whom we have a spiritual pact to help each other grow. Only by understanding the spiritual pur-pose of True Romantic Love can we follow the sacred path of the soulmate toward enlightenment.

geR ald Sze is an award-winning author and spiritual philosopher. He has studied spirituality and existential philosophy for nearly 30 years, including an immersion in Buddhism. Sze self-published his first book, Changing Fate Through Reincarnation, in 2012.

“We should not think of a soulmate as someone with whom we are supposed to expe-

rience nonstop bliss, but as a beloved mate with whom we reconnect again and again

over many lifetimes to learn, grow and evolve spiritually. Only by understanding the

whe theR we’Re negotiating a multi-million-dollar contract or trying to settle on which in-laws we’ll spend the holidays with, engaging in conflict is one of life’s most dreaded experiences. What if you could approach your next difficult conversation with genuine confidence that you can reach a satisfying resolution without losing face or damaging the relationship? In Resolve, applied psychologist and negotiation expert Hal Movius provides tools and techniques to build confi-dence in three key areas—poise, mastery and awareness—so you can handle all of life’s conflicts more effectively and with less stress.

hal MoviuS, founder and president of Movius Consulting, provides coach-ing, consulting, and negotiation training for Fortune 500 companies and global NGOs. An applied psychologist, Movius is also an expert in emotional intelligence, self-regulation, leadership, and interpersonal processes, and is the co-author of Built to Win: Creating a World Class Negotiating Organization.

resolVeNegotiating Life’s Conflicts with Greater Confidencehal MoviuS, Phd

Achieve better outcomes while experiencing less stress in all of life’s negotiations by building genuine confidence in three key areas: emotional poise, mastery of negotiation techniques, and expanded awareness.

“Even if you are a highly capable and successful person, you are not alone in wanting to

avoid or move quickly through conflict. Even if you negotiate for a living, or have been

to negotiation courses—or teach them (ahem!)—you’re not crazy if you find it really

hard to put new ideas and intentions into practice at the negotiating table. In the com-

ing pages I’ll help explain why this is, and what you can do about it.”

“Highly recommended reading for anyone who wants to bring their boldest, best self

to conflict or negotiations.”
